Bad posture a sin?

I recline while reading scripture. Is that a sin because it means I am lazy? For some reason, I find it hard to stay in an upright position for long, so I recline while reading or praying/contemplating.

I pray that this is not a serious question.

No, it is not a sin. Why would this be a manifestation of sloth? Laziness is sinful when it prevents you from doing things you should be doing. You are not required to pray or read in any given posture (except at Mass and other formulaic times of prayer).

Yes, bad posture was actually just left off the seven deadly list by a fraction. In fact, up until very recently, people were excommiunicated for sitting down.

LOL!!!

Oh… the positions I pray and read the Bible in… I don’t think God minds so long as our hearts and minds are focused on Him. 🙂

:rotfl: OP, I know this was a serious question, but this was too funny!

Now, my main reason for responding is that I sometimes do this, too, and feel guilty about it, particularly when praying. I’ve never thought it was actually a sin, but I have wondered if it effects the efficacy of my prayers or devotions (in the case of studying Scriptute.) Scrupulosity ftw!

I would say that slouching or getting too comfortable does lead one to the danger of falling asleep. It’s easier to stay awake and aware when one is upright. 🙂

This is very true. Especially given the extra peaceful feeling that comes from praying/communing with God.

Wow, I actually needed that :D. The replies got me going again after lunch. I have thought the same thing before to myself and figured that as long as I wasn’t lying down in church, it probably didn’t matter if I was lying in bed at night praying about a particular issue or if I was kneeling beside my bed.

No, and if you persist in this kind of thinking, please seek out help from a spiritual director for scrupulosity.

The only sin you need to really worry about is denying the Holy Ghost. Other than that, you will sin the rest of your life while in the flesh. All of your sins that you have committed up to now and all of the sins in your future were washed away, once and for good almost 2000 years ago on the cross. Accepting the Lord and His gift of grace seals the deal for you.

Next, repent, read the Bible and have a steady, on-going relationship with Jesus. Bad posture or any sin? Don’t worry about them, but definitely confess your sins unto God.

Uh… I disagree. ALL sin should distress us. If we are children of God anything less then our full effort is unacceptable.

HE died for us… what do we do for Him? We try to be as holy as possible to honor His sacrifice, that’s what. And that means removing all the sin from our life that we can.

Bad posture is not a sin.

It might be a little bit inadvisable if you tend to end up with a sore back because of it, but it’s hardly sinful.

As for running the risk of falling asleep if reading in a reclining position, then I can’t think of any better way to go to sleep than with God on my mind… 🙂

Everyone knows kneeling is the correct posture for that kind of stuff 🤷
