was there baptism before john the baptist came on the scene?did the jews have some form of baptism?

I don’t know how old the tradition is, but when a non-Jew converts to Judaism today, they are baptized with water.

Yes, there is.

The Pharisees and their custom of “baptisms” is referred to in the New Testament.

The Rite of Mikveh, a ritual immersion, is done for various reasons, especially after menstruation or childbirth, or in the conversion of a Gentile (even Gentile infant of either sex) into Judaism.

Interesting, it sounds as if it must be connected with cleansing. I guess it should not be a surprise, there is no reason to think John the Baptist plucked it out of thin air.

Notice that the Temple delegation did not ask St. John, “What do you mean by this rite?” It was obvious. He, in effect, was saying, “You have no special spiritual standing with God just because you are descended from Abraham. You’re no better than the idolaters.”

They asked him, “By what authority are you doing this?”
