I don’t know how old the tradition is, but when a non-Jew converts to Judaism today, they are baptized with water.

Notice that the Temple delegation did not ask St. John, “What do you mean by this rite?” It was obvious. He, in effect, was saying, “You have no special spiritual standing with God just because you are descended from Abraham. You’re no better than the idolaters.”Interesting, it sounds as if it must be connected with cleansing.
