My younger brother and his wife are talking about setting a date for their son’s baptism. Baby will be about a month old. My sister in law wants to dress baby is a christening gown. My brother thinks it’s a little odd because he’s a boy. I suppose it doesn’t matter too much either way. There are christening gowns specifically for boys so obviously people are using them. Anyone use a christening gown for their baby boys?

Yep–old family gown.

I have a daughter, but all the boys at my parish have worn gowns. I think they’re precious and prefer them greatly to those little white suit outfits.

My youngest grandson wore one when baptized he was two weeks old at the time.I have noticed older baby boys wearing more of the short pants and shirts. However,on one as young as your nephew,a gown is just fine,IMO;)

I suppose dressing as a Jedi Knight is out of the question! There was a baptism last week at our church, the boys had little pants and shirts, girls gowns. If they dressed 'em as Jedi’s the would all have nice robes!

Congratulations on this wonderful event.

Everybody in my family was baptized in my father’s baptismal gown.
I really prefer gowns to the little white suits, even for boys.
It’s a one time outfit that can be worn by every child in the family, regardless of how many children. There’s the practical financial aspect as well as the traditional.

My father wore one. We wore it, my sisters and I. Somewhere in our move, my parents lost it.

My mom made my son’s christening gown, which I designed. Very plain, very long, as the “old one” was, but with a crocheted edge at the bottom that came from my aunts communion dress. (Circa 1902) It as the closest I could get to a family heirloom. 😉

Both of my sons wore it, as did my daughter. Now packed away.

Is he’s a very young baby, no one will be able to tell gender. It’s fine.
Back int he day, no boys wore tiny suits.

We have a family baptismal gown that all of the children in our family have been baptized in, going on three generations. Boys and girls. I think that most of the boys I’ve seen recently baptized have had a gown, though some have just worn a white suit or sweater set. The parish provides a white bib for the children, if they don’t have a gown.

Which day is that? I’m pretty sure baptismal gowns go back to the time where all babies wore gowns until they could crawl, regardless of if they were a boy or girl. Back in the day, people didn’t know what they were having until he or she arrived, and they often made clothes by hand which took a long time. Most baby clothes were made unisex for that reason and gowns were popular as they were easy to change. I don’t think pink and blue everything because a thing until clothing was mass produced and the industry wanted people to have a reason to keep buying.

😊 I think that’s what she said: no boys wore tiny suits. Meaning everyone wore gowns. 🙂

No. I used a one piece outfit that did not look like a gown. It avoided many arguments about whose gown to use. We felt son was an individual, not a show piece, so we found a beautiful hand made one online…sort of like a romper, but he obviously could not walk. It did not look like a little version of a communion suit.

Granted, in our family–DH’s side–they wanted a boy to carry on the family name. Hence the reason we did our own thing.

Some day I will tell the story of when MIL heard he wanted to be a priest! She was NOT happy (only grandchild).

We dressed our son in a regular baptismal outfit that was romper-style, but a lot of people do put gowns on their boys. It really doesn’t matter.

Is there a particular reason you are concerned about this? It’s really up to the parents- they should decide themselves how to dress their own baby.

I have never seen a tiny suit at a baptism but I suppose it could be cute. I have only seen baptismal gowns. We recently had our newest son baptized and he looked sharp in the heirloom white gown and hood. Not sure how things worked in days of yore, but we had it altered so the priest could more easily reach the heart and back… He was well-behaved even while savoring the blessed salt. Not that it helped - there is always a screamer! Congratulations on your son and enjoy the baptism.

My oldest wore a sleeper when he was baptized. I think we went through about 3 of them within about a half hour as that was the day everything tried to escape his diaper and through his clothes. It did not matter. We put on a little yellow sleeper and put a hand knit white sweater over top and he looked very cute.

My other two were a bit older so wore pants and t-shirt. There are pictures of my Dad in a white gown when he was baptized in his family’s church (not Catholic).
