I have a hard time understanding the slavish devotion of some Protestants to the KJV. They probably don’t know that the KJV was commissioned with a specific mandate: to emphasize the importance, legitimacy and primacy of the Episcopal hierarchy, that is, to legitimize the Church of England. That is why in Acts 1 it says “and his bishoprick let another take”, when every other translation more correctly says “let another take his office” or “'May another take his place of leadership”. There are many more examples of this agenda-pushing in the KJV.
FYI - I just looked this one up and the KJV is the most literally correct. The word translated is “episcopan”. When the word “bishoprick” had meaning, it was a solid translation. In fact, since the word “bishop” was used in translating the similar root elsewhere, this was arguably the best translation.

hi libertarian. are you aware of how many modifications have been made to the 1611 kjv. tell me you were just having fun and your not serious? but if you are lets start a new thread. 🙂
No the church burning th bibles consider that version the KJV 1611 as the only legitimate bible, read their web site.

So all later versions including the very nice modern versions using more contemporary language is Satanic in origin. Including my own NIV and NLT versions I use. I just pointed out that their view is narrow to that one bible and its foreign languages translations.

Factoid ot my view I find all translations to have merit as the word of God.

I wonder if they would burn the Latin Vulgate, from which the KJV is derived.

Edit
Ok, actually the KJV is derived heavily from the Douay-Rheims (which most certainly they would burn) which in turn is of course a translation of the Latin Vulagte… But you see where I’m going here, just pointing out the sheer irony of all this.

Personally, I think we are giving this group way too much attention.

They are just a new version of Fred Phelps and his clan, and Jack Chick.

It is obvious that they think everyone in the world is wrong except them, and no reasonable person(s) would be able to convince them otherwise.

There is a reason why so many of this type list themselves as “independent”. No mainstream faith would sanction this type of thinking or behavior.

He had his 15 minutes of fame. He isn’t worried so much about souls as much as he is attention.

Just an observation.

Nope. Sorry, but the there is no Greek word “episcopan”. However, the word Episcopi is defined thusly in Greek:

“Episcopi (Greek: ἐπίσκοποι, sing. ἐπίσκοπος) were inspectors who were sometimes sent by the Athenians to subject states. Harpocration compares them to the Lacedaemonian harmosts, and says that they were also called Phylakes. It appears that these Episcopi received a salary at the cost of the cities over which they presided.”

By the way, as a Catholic I agree with the KJV transalation of Episcopi and so does the Catholic Church, as the Douay-Rheims translation (from which the KJV borrowed heavily) also translates it as “bishopric”.

I would agree that most translations have merit. Some are far more accurate than others. Some translations do clearly reveal a bias.

It is interesting to compare translations—and pay attention to the footnotes. The body of the Biblical text is often manipulated by translators, using very simple methods.

When there are variants among manuscripts, translators choose whether to place a certain rendering in the main body of text or banish it to the footnotes. People rarely read the footnotes. Translators will use a number of different manuscripts to make a translation–some passages may come from Greek manuscripts, others from Hebrew, etc.

Jesus and his disciples, most likely, spoke Aramaic. Of course the N.T. was originally written in Greek.

Scholars cannot fully agree on the authors of the N.T.

If I recall correctly, there was only about a 10% literacy rate at the time of Christ. And many of the 10% could read, but not write. So, if any of the N.T. was written by the disciples of Christ—in the midst of preaching the Gospel and fleeing persecution; they would have had to learn to read and write Greek (eloquently,) when most could not read or write their primary language of Aramaic. :hmmm:

i take it they are King James Onlyists? while the king James version might be one of the greatest examples of English literature it is far from being perfect and contains serious defects because it did not use the earliest manuscripts and initially had many mistranslations.

burning all bibles which are not KJV is just inane as the idea that the KJC is the only inspired scripture and everything else is satanic is quite obviously not something never mentioned in the bible and is basically just a protestant tradition ( and protestants supposedly reject all tradition lol)

Yep, amongst other “satanic” things, they are throwing every Bible into the fire but the KJV. What are your thoughts?

edit: forgot the link =P. Ya’ll are fast!
Nothing more than a fine example of extreme fundamentalism. What else is new? Honestly, I can’t stand these people. They make the fight for Christianity harder by reinforcing bad (and needless) stereotypes. I seriously have fantasies of driving by “churches” like that with a copy of The Screwtape Letters in one hand (they hate C.S. Lewis apparently) and rocking tune blaring on a CD player. >:P

The KJV does have its merits. It is written in a beautiful English style. It was a great accomplishment–placing the Bible in the hands of the people in a language they understood. And devoted Christians died trying to make this possible. So, I am aware of the rich history of the KJV.

The problem is that it was translated from inferior manuscripts–mostly from the 16th Century. Since, that time, many earlier manuscripts have been discovered, shedding new light on errors in the KJV and other Bible translations.

Of course, The Dead Sea Scrolls were an amazing discovery.

Who knows what will be discovered in years to come. I think it is important to keep up with manuscript discovery. It is the KJV *** only*** part that disturbs me.

Good luck with your Latin studies. You are plenty bright. 😉

I studied Greek, when I lived there for two years; but lack of use for about 22 years has not helped my retention of the language. Greek was very difficult for me, because the characters are different, as is Hebrew.

I keep thinking I will get back to my studies. For Biblical purposes, I would need an ancient form of Greek, as well as Hebrew, and Aramaic. Not sure if I have the energy. 🤷 Anna

As you can see from my previous posts, we hold similar views about he KJV.

As a Protestant Christian, it is very difficult to see such practices as burning Bibles. It does give Protestants a bad name.

Yet, they must really believe they are doing the right thing–either that or they are seeking attention. It’s difficult to guess one’s motives.

I think we should pray for this group. May God open their minds and hearts to His Truth.

I like that they also burned music including “contempory” Christian. I hope they didn’t throw the dictionary into the pile. They’ll need it for checking their spelling :D.

hehehehe…

I have my Trusty King James. But at night when no one is looking, I drag out the forbidden Rainbow Study Bible from it’s secret hiding place. Oh Lord, no telling what they would say about a Rainbow bible. But I have an idea. lol
I’ve never heard of a rainbow bible? But I do love the informal **Good News **bible! 😃
