Hurting the Mother of God? “Baptist smashes Virgin Mary”?

It would seem you’re talking about a real person, but you’re talking about a statue here.

Probably not a valuable, or blessed, or consecrated statue. One not containing any relics.

Please refrain from idolatry and keep your perspective. Statues have no ears and may not hear; they have no eyes and may not see. We do not worship mere stone and marble, but we honor what they represent. Therefore, someone who smashes a statue cannot hurt the Blessed Virgin Mary, she lives in Heaven and in our hearts.

The heresy of iconoclasm is nothing new, it was alive and well in the eighth century, it nearly tore our Church apart. The Byzantines are quite familiar with it. And the Eastern Churches don’t even use statues, they use painted (written) icons.
I agree that if someone smashes a statue they can’t actually physically hurt Our Lady, however the disrespect shown towards her through this action offends God and hurts her. Respect or disrespect to a symbol is attributed to the person being represented.

Why doesn’t he just start knocking down the rest of his so-called church as well? Since he’s so paranoid about idol-worship. Starting with that symbol behind him. I do pray for this man and his blinded followers; there is intense Catholic-phobia in many corners of Protestantism (though it’s usually less blatant than this). On the positive side, though: Many Protestants are indeed starting to turn to the Blessed Virgin - even praying the Rosary.

I think we have to call Catholic exorcists. That Baptist pastor may have a demon in him. Hahahaha. I hope Mary would send forth the sun and let his soul burn forever in it.
I think we should pray for mercy because that is what Jesus and Mary want 😦

I work at an Interdenominational Christian bookstore. In 2012 we’re going to be getting a book called “Blessed Evangelical Mary: Why We Can’t Ignore Her Any Longer.” Needless to say, I’m curious and excited. Maybe this guy should read that book.

:(:mad::confused::tsktsk::bighanky:

That guy is really confused.

But Mary loves him anyway… 🙂

Elizium23 does make a good point. It’is no wonder Catholics are accused of worshipping statues.

Having said that, it really shouldn’t shock anyone. The martyrs had their hands and feet chopped off, were burned alive and slowly lowered into vats of boiling liquids. I shake my head sometimes and I ask myself, “Is that the best they can do? Smash a statue?” If the Catholic Church really is as bad as they say it is, worse than Hitler and the Nazis, then I would think that one of them would grow some testicles and actually do something about it.

But the video to me is kinda sad. Definitely mocking. I wonder if the Pastor would be so bold as to perform an act of equal disrespect to Islam?

I find it hilarious that they endlessly cite the bit about “graven images”, but ignore the proximate verse that tells us God Himself ordered Moses to construct statues of angels in the Holy of Holies. There is no consistency when your entire ministry is based on emotion and centered on man. 😦

So I found a video on youtube of what I believe to be a fundamentalist baptist preacher mercilessly dishonoring the virgin mary and getting applause for it.

Now I know that there are certain people out there that accuse us of idolitry, but this guy takes it waaayy too far by trying to hurt us through hurting the mother of God.

Imagine of Jesus came in as he was doing that?
For the record, this preacher is not Baptist. He is Steven Williams of the First Church of our Lord Jesus Christ, another of those thousands of man-made, “Bible Only” Protestant organizations.

And it should be noted, he not only smashed a statue of our Mother Mary with a hammer, he also destroyed the Crucifix she was holding by smashing (the representation of) Christ’s face.

Please pray for this preacher’s soul.

Thanks Jim, I was wondering if he was Baptist or another venture capital Church.

It was actually a statue of Little Therese; not Mary. 😉

Mother Mary is tough and is probably having a chuckle with St. Therese about it.

  1. That’s not a Mary statue, judging by the flowers and crucifix being held, it’s probably St. Therese de Lisieux.
Oh boy… why am I not surprised. Just don’t tell him that - he may do it all over again.
  1. He obviously doesn’t understand the context of statues. We never claimed that they were real people when in statue form.
It comes from their erroneous understanding of the First Commandment (the second commandment for them), about graven images. Like with “Sola Fide”, they cherry-pick a few verses out of the Bible in order to conjure up a new, heretical doctrine.
  1. If he wants to take Mary out so badly, why doesn’t he just pull a Martin Luther and delete those parts from the gospels? And in that he would really be “doing the Bible” like he says. In fact, now that I think about it, why don’t all anti-Marian folk do this? It would better serve their purposes.
True. Either way, they do cut out these parts of the Bible psychologically - or, at most, emphasize how “little” they mean.
  1. I noticed that there is some sort of golden cross thing behind him when he was on the lower level?
Hey, that’s not fair!.. Wait, yes it is.

Yeah, I’d be interested to read that too. Sounds like a desperately-needed breath of fresh air, regardless of what their reasons may be.

Well, don’t forget Terry Jones, the Quran-burning pastor.

Actually, this is “Pastor” Gino Jennings at First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. They proudly discuss this desecration on their website. If anyone would like to contact these people you can go to the Truth of God website where they provide the contact info.
