Baptists (generally speaking) do not understand our belief that Christ works
through the Sacraments. They thus put Christ and the Sacraments at odds with each other. It is because they can’t get their heads around the idea of God using tangible things as a conduit for His Grace that they think we believe the Sacraments save us apart from Christ.
There is also their erroneous belief that “getting saved” is a one-time done deal when they have a particular conversion experience. They believe that a person who is convicted of their sins, believes that Jesus died on the cross for them, and asks Jesus to forgive them and come into their hearts is THE one moment in their lives when they “get saved.” Both of the Sacraments (ordinances, they’re called) that they do practice - baptism and communion - are just symbolic gestures and have no spiritual benefit.
Now, Baptists will differ on whether one can forfeit that salvation (Free Will Baptists do not adhere to OSAS), but as far as I know Baptists don’t believe that salvation is a journey we’re on our entire lives, and isn’t completed until we arrive in Heaven.
What they call “papal doctrine” is actually “Jesus doctrine” but you can’t tell them that.
