I couldn’t stop myself from posting this. It is a link to a Catholic news source. Scroll down and watch the video of Pope Benedict baptizing babies, it’s amazing! What joy he must have felt while doing this, what an honor for those children, a wonderful moment to memorialize:

That is so wonderful!!

May the SACRED HEART Bless all these little Children!!

An honor for the children? Perhaps.

However, I would think that it should be a greater honor for the Pope to be so involved in another person’s being made a new creation through baptism. To be so close, even touching a person when they pass from Death into Life must be a great honor, indeed.

It is.

As long as I live, I will never forget how amazing it was to hold my Godson in my arms as he was being baptized.

I like that 😃 Indeed for the baptized it makes little difference who the minister is, but for someone to be the minister of this great Sacrament is always an extraordinary honor.

I know the EF rubrics have the godparents hold the child during the actual baptism. I don’t think the OF rite has that rubric…
But did you think that the OF baptismal rite forbade godparents from holding the child? My diocese celebrates with the OF, but our baptisms are conducted with the godparents holding the child. Just because it’s not in the rubric doesn’t mean it’s not done. It is good to be mindful of how we draw our conclusions. 🙂

What a great story. I think SonCatcher is on to something in that it is likely something that brings great joy to the pope. Sometimes we don’t think just what a priest gives up when he becomes a bishop (and then a pope). Gone are the days of celebrating Baptisms and weddings on a regular basis. They’ve got to miss doing that.

What an honor for the Pope and an honor for the children and families.

I do hope that these are “average” Catholic families, not wealthy or well-connected. I wonder how they were selected.

I had just never seen it done in the OF. Maybe it’s a regional thing.

Vatican employees are selected each year.
