I think we are going to see more of this as we slowly, but surely win this battle. Hopefully, we always deal with the protests with charity and use the opportunity to evangelize…engage and transform…

The Femen protest was a colorful, but tasteless (not to mention, disgusting) episode which is part of a massive protest against the proposed law. Apparently, groups from across Europe have arrived in Madrid to demonstrate their opposition. However, even the Spanish public does not support the proposals in the law.

In a January survey conducted by the polling organization Metroscopia for El País newspaper, 78% of Spaniards said that the reform was not necessary, and 86% maintained that women should be able to choose freely whether to terminate a pregnancy. Those sentiments were supported by 68% of those who voted for Rajoy’s governing Popular Party (PP).

So why is the ruling Popular Party making an effort to pass the law? Some observers point to the influence of the Catholic Church within that political party.

*Many here believe that the government is trying to placate Spain’s own church hierarchy, which is, in a saying beloved by Spaniards, more papist than the Pope. “The bishops still have a lot of power within the PP,” says journalist Juan Bedoya, who covers religion for El País, Spain’s leading newspaper. “And the party hierarchy knows it’s best to be prudent with them. They don’t want them out there with their flocks in the street, protesting.”

But the question is raised, how much influence do the Catholic bishops have on the Spanish public. Although 74% of Spaniards say they are Catholic, 57% say they attend church “almost never.” And 50% of Catholics say they support a right for women to choose abortion.

Regardless, the Justice Minister has vowed to defy all protests, and to make sure that the law is passed.

“You have my word that there will be no screams or any insults that will see this minister abandon his commitment to comply with the [PP] platform to regulate the rights of women and the unborn,” Gallardón said at the [party] conference in Valladolid. “We are not talking about moral issues, electoral advantages, but instead the defense of fundamental rights.”
<The Gallardón quote is from the English language version of the Spanish newspaper, El Pais>
(I won’t link to that news article due to an inappropriate photo)

A right to protest, perhaps. A right to public indecency, never. 😉
It is troubling that they don’t have the conviction of their beliefs to stick around until the police showed up. Young protesters…so flaky. 😛

So many breasts.
So few little mouths feeding from them.

I wonder how people there view Femen? If they have or are on their way to lose credibility and known as “those crazy protesters”?

FEMEN is idiotic (see link below) … but their dumbest actions are still more intelligent than their cause (defending abortion).

I have seen this group of exhibitionists ramping up their anti-Catholicism (thanks to another CAF thread alerting us to FEMEN’s antics) with ever bolder
confrontations in front of Catholic Churches throughout the world however … and that is more sad than funny.

What IS a Bishop supposed to do in that situation?

On the more serendipidous side …

Re: Bare-breasted Femen protesters besiege bishop in Spain

 - It’s better than using their FISTS I suppose …
So many breasts.
So few little mouths feeding from them.
I know this is a sweet, pro-life sentiment but … also … :rotfl:

Funniest headline meets funniest (profound) bumper sticker possibility.

Every noun and verb in this whole scenario makes me laugh for some reason. It IS after midnight and my judgement is not at its peak … but I nearly lost it when I read the article’s rendition of the incident … gmanetwork.com/news/story…ishop-in-spain

especially:
Clerics and worshippers rushed out of the church to fend off the protesters, who fled before the police were called, an AFP photographer at the scene said.
Lacking the photos or a video it sounds like a bad Monty Python sketch from the '70s.

Fend off. I can’t even … :doh2::ouch:

Look at like this:

If Islamic influence grows, a lot of those women could convert to Islam, become a third wife and spend the rest of her life taking care of kids, covered head to toe and be not allowed to leave the house or have any male friends simply because they are so confused by hate and anger, out of political correctness or both.

In fact, this is already happening.

My point here is that they cannot win on this culture of death and liberalism. It will always and has always failed.

Um, that’s extremely hardline Islam and is very much in the minority. I’ve known several Muslim women and it’s always been just hijab, not a burka.

How childish.

It’s hard to believe that they’re after anything but attention and notoriety if these are the tactics they resort to. 😛
This is more than childish. This is evil in it’s purest form, Intrinsic Evil. We must begin to see the work of the devil in our daily lives

Coatimundi, on these sorts of things, it frankly doesn’t matter what the public thinks, or at least it shouldn’t. The public often supports a lot of other horrific things (I’m thinking certain areas in the United States about 60 years ago), doesn’t mean we should indulge them.

We need to remember that nude art can be perfectly acceptable in Catholicism, why not the protesters? Let them protest! Let positive Catholic values abound!!!

FEMEN will keep going to the point where they cause physical violence, and then it will be okay for the folks that they’re harming to turn around and deal out some knuckle sandwiches. They won’t look nearly so confident after they’re missing a few teeth.

Just have to wait for events to take their course.

In the meantime, shame on 'em.

Nude art is one thing but this is sacrilege and blasphemy. Perhaps you should re-read your catechism.

There are two reasons this is wrong, and sinful. The first is this has nothing to do with art, this was a demonstration, not an art gallery. Second and most serious reason is that it is sinful. As a Catholic you should know that Jesus told us their are two commandments that are most important. 1- Love your God with your Whole heart and your Whole mind. 2- Love your neighbor as your self. This demonstration was done in an attempt to humiliate the Bishop. There was no Love in it. I recommend you take a refresher course in theology and Logic.
