Battle Over Abortion Funding in Congress Pits Catholics Against Each Other

The present standoff over abortion funding in health-care reform pits two sets of Catholics against each other: The bishops, supported by pro-life leaders, zealously oppose abortion funding, while prominent Catholic members of Congress just as zealously promote it. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi leads the pro-abortion Catholic pack pushing hard for abortion funding in the health-care bill.

It’s absolutely terrible how people try to forcibly include evil things within things that are originally made to try and help others. It’s simply despicable. What they want would never pass on its own terms out in the open and they know it.

The Teaching of the Catholic Church on this couldn’t be more clear. The Historic Teaching couldn’t be more clear, because even the Church’s first Catechism, “The Didache of the Twelve Apostles”, condemned Abortion as the murder of the Innocent Unborn and forbade Christians from considering it.

The Teaching of the Church hasn’t changed in over 1950 years…

I think the problem is the refusal of the Bishops to use the Spiritual Authority that is given to them by God through the church and the “Laying on of Hands”. I understand a lot of these “Pro-Abortion Catholics” would get “Mad as Hatters” if they were denied the Eucharist - As it is, I believe they are committing Sacrilege by Partaking and eating and drinking Judgment on themselves (see 1 Cor 11:23-34). Our Bishops need to understand that it is better to please God than to please man, and that, by denying them the Eucharist, they would be informing these politicians that their support of the slaughter of the unborn innocent is wrong - PERIOD.

I think we need to realize that things such as the slaughter of the unborn and genocide aren’t political, and aren’t “matters of Prudential Judgment” - That the only “matters of Prudential Judgment” in issues such as these are how we’re going to stop the Slaughter of the Innocent.

Funding for Abortion should never pit Catholics against each other - We should all agree on the Sanctity of Human Life and all agree on the need to LEGALLY protect human beings made in the Icon of God.

I really wish that the bishops would get off of the fence and take a stand on this. The bishops want to declare war on abortion; my reaction is go ahead, start in congress. The people we have in Washington are simply bad examples to the rest of the church.

This might be a good issue for them to take a forcible stand, and perhaps that is what they have in mind.

Politically, the problem is that the USCCB and the bishops in general are liberal enough to want health care reform, but Catholic enough to oppose abortion funding of any sort. The ‘Catholic’ Democrats in Congress will try to use this as a way to co-opt the bishops into supporting a bill with ‘some’ abortion funding.

I do hope they take a forcible stand. The bills that have past are not health reform, they are insurance reform. We can insure people without creating the socialized mess these bills are setting up.

So far most of the firm rhetoric has come from pro-abortion law makers. Everytime the speaker of the house goes on camera she is looking her bishop and every other Catholic square in the eye and saying “I want more abortions”. That is her decision and she feels that the church will not take her on.
 
From my viewpoint, there is nothing being pitted between true Catholics, since the liberal politicians are ‘Catholic’ in name only.

I really doubt that most politicians are really religious. Most highly educated, rich people aren’t Christian, correct?

However, there is a difference between a scientist and a politician: the scientist’s job doesn’t rely on popularity, as long as he isn’t too hated. A politician’s job relies on one (or both) of two things, how corrupt the system is, and how popular s/he is. Most Americans are Christians. Christians are more likely to be fond for a Christian than a non-Christian. Politicians use this sentiment.

Would you vote for Richard Dawkins?

Indeed. And all her bishop need do to instruct his priests to say from the pulpit that Speaker is an obstinate sinner and so should not receive communion until she repents.
 
Stopping them from receiving communion is also for their own good. To openly rebel against God’s law and continue receiving Him brings condemnation on oneself…
