Pagans talk about a witchcraft revival and a Pagan resurrection in the 20th Century. We might expect every witch to wear a black hat, carry a broom stick and have a black cat. However, witchcraft is disguised in our culture. There’s lot of aspects of popular paganism which have grown in at least the last 50 years. Don’t discriminate against me but I’m a full blown Christian.
  • New Age movement and hippy movement
  • Green Man and Green Wicca reflected in the ecology vibe in the 60s
  • Neo-shamanism;Timothy Leary, trance music and LSD
  • Non-Christian sexual mores and nudity
  • Short term marriages, gay marriages and polyamory.
  • Fortune telling; tarot reading, astrology, palmistry, scrying, Gypsy Lee
  • Alternative therapies such as Aromatherapy which has come from Wicca and Crystal healing.
  • Home incense burning
  • Herbal lore;herbal teas, herbal medicines, herbal oils, herbal cookery.
  • Meditation on nature (which has come from Eastern religions)
  • Popular occult; Marilyn Manson and Nirvana
  • Cult pagan films such as Harry Potter
  • Worship of old pagan Gods such as Pan (Old Horny), Odin (Santa Claus), Herne the Hunter (Rudolph), Eostre (Easter Bunny)
Oh dear…it’s a Friday…So we’re talking about witchcraft…everyone here knows that wiccan and pagan spells are rituals, and to them what Catholic rituals are to you guys? Nothing evil, just…a different way of praying. But because it is Friday, I will play along!

New Age was just a way of trying to get closer to nature and as funny as Hippies are, they were never witches. Dude.

Green Wiccan hasn’t harmed anyone…we should all take better care of nature, after all, God would want us to.

Trance music is just ugly. We’d be better off without it…and LSD. And…well…okay, it’s not positive, but is it truly evil?

Hey, I am a fan of gay marriages and civil partnerships…so I doubt that is considered witchcraft in general. However, people should mean it when they say “for better, for worse”…not “for better, but I am gone when I notice your annoying habits”…

Fortune telling and all that stuff is just a bit of fun, and you can decide whether or not you’ll indulge in what isn’t real.

Alternative therapies evil? But lavender helps me sleep! Curse the fickle Mr Sandman!

Herbal tea tastes scrummy…and without herbs my cooking would be even worse (oregano covers the burnt taste…)

Meditation on God’s beautiful nature is now witchcraft???

Popular culture is just that…and Nirvana rules! Marilyn Manson? Not as much…I prefer Type O Negative if we’re going for weird. Besides, I am surprised you haven’t gone onto the true occult: COMIC BOOKS!!! They have…demons and…angels…and magicians…and…stuff…which I am sure you’d see as witchcraft! (mostly because some of them are about that)

Harry Potter is just a bad concept, doesn’t make it evil.

Santa is Odin? I knew that the one at the local mall only had one eye and had two ravens with him…and the horse with all those legs? I should have known!!!

Now grow up and start wasting Friday in another way! 😃

why is he dressed in red? the devil imatiting christ passion covered in blood, often see santa with a crown of holly why? imatating christs crown. there is much more but google it and see the results
old nick st nick santa satan not even much spelling difference

Quite frankly I used to think all this criticism of Harry Potter was nonsens ebut then the other night I accidentally turn my wife into a ferret. Honestly I thought I was just waving chopsticks around- I didn’t know I had inadvertently muttered the incantation I learned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire!

Now I have a moral dilemma-should I leave her as a ferret since to turn her back into herself I would be practicing sorcery , a grievous sin? I really need an answer as she is leaving fur all over the floor and the furniture and the neighborhood cat think she is a treat.

Wow-Santa attacked and it is only August!

So herbal remedies are purely the domain of pagans? Ridiculous.

Herbal Cookery? Seriously? So it’s Paganism to have mint sauce with lamb chops?

If herbal cookery is paganism then KFC have a lot to answer for.
Yes, herbal cookery is pagan. In the Bible, witches are called “Herb Users” or Kashaphs. There’s a branch of witchcraft called Kitchen Witchery or Hearth Witchery which is the origin of the cauldron. Herbs and the pestle and mortar are important aspects of the kitchen witch. They call their cooking “Herb magic”. A lot of herbs in our food have come from paganism and most are like hash in my house. Sage (or salvia) is used in a hallucinogenic drug called Youtube.

A lot of flippancy in the responses here.

In fact “New Age” pagan religion is a major threat to Christianity. Horoscopes and spiritism are practiced by millions. Wiccans are growing in number, and Wicca aims directly at teenagers, hoping to lure them in to occult practices on the promise of power and coolness. The current wave of Vampire literature is based, you may notice, not on fighting vampires, but on the benefits of entering their world.

One may complacently pooh-pooh this, but New Age provides an easy, value-free and sacrifice-free spiritual choice for a growing number of westerners. A spiritual vacuum has been left by the retreat of Christianity, and the lack of thorough catechesis following the 1960s. New paganism, Wicca and satanism are filling a lot of that gap.

Such people are generally intensely hostile to the Church, and support all attacks against it, from removing christian symbolism from the public realm, to re-writing history to undermine Christianity and the Church in all mass media. See how Catholics are portrayed and vilified in new-age influenced films like The Da Vinci Code, King Arthur and countless others.

And yes, even Santa Claus is subtly used by secularists and others, to turn attention at Christmas away from Christianity, and on to a figure who has been carefully stripped of all visual and historical connection to Saint Nicholas - a man who I don’t think lived at the North Pole with a bunch of elves.

So, you may laugh, but the number of people reading horoscopes, casting spells, covering themselves in satanic tattoos and believing they can live as they like and still gain some new-age nirvana is already greater than the number of prectising Catholics in many western countries.

An excellent post, sir!
The true believer fights the good fight. It is our duty to spred the Love of Christ.
Keep up the good posts.
Keep the Faith.

A few more to add to the list:

-drinking kook aid (mixing ingredients together…cauldron based)
-girls playing with dolls (voodoo)
-dancing/singing (rain dances, nature worship)
-voice recognition software (incantations)
-being nice (the devil also can appear to be nice)
-smiling (this is serious stuff)

Brilliant!!!

Seriously, I think that people have very little faith in their…faith, so to speak. If you have your faith and your children have it, and it is strong…then who cares if there’s Wiccans or hippies around? Other religions shouldn’t threaten yours, but inspire you to be a good Christian/Catholic…

As for vampire fiction as mentioned above, True Blood really bases vampires on minorities…and there are some good and some bad vamps. It’s not like Buffy where they lost their souls and became demons, but rather a different kind of human. It’s a metaphore, not meant to be taken as writ.

But that’s just my two cents!

I was reading this and the big thing that irked me was the Rudolph comment. Rudolph was created as a Macys ad campaign. I don’t think that anyone worships him. Maybe people do though. If I was going to pick a company mascot to worship I would pick the walmart smiley face. He has the power of roll back!
Rudolph, the red nose reindeer, is from Chicago, Montgomery Ward. I am not totally sure – but he may have been created first by the catalog department where my Dad worked. He definitely is not part of witchcraft.

Nonetheless, witchcraft in various forms is alive and well. So also is channeling.

Blessings,
granny

Budgie, the reality is modern Protestantism itself is little more than Platonic, neo-pagan humanism couched in Christian terminology. It is far more insidious than any of the things you list above because people don’t even realize the damage their theology is causing, both to society in general and to our society’s belief in God specifically.

Yours in Christ

"… witchcraft is disguised in our culture.
I’ll give ya that.
Also, did you intend to omit the “pro-choice” movement

Here’s part of your run-down that caught my eye:
  • Hippy movement, weed, LSD: If you’re saying ILLegal drugs are a potential gateway into the occult, then it wouldn’t surprise me.
  • Fortune telling; tarot reading, astrology: The Catechism covers these along w/ magic, sorcery, superstitions, talismans and spiritual mediums and so on[1852, 2115-2117].
An anecdote: One of our friend’s uncle made up newspaper horoscopes for extra cash in college.
  • Crystal healing; “positive energy” rocks, bracelets etc.: If the intent is this object will magically deliver me, then it’s in the Catechism with superstitions.
  • Meditation on nature: What a great way to commune with God among His creations. Maybe you mean worshiping the creation and not the Creator.
  • Harry Potter, and (my addition): attractive depictions of vampires, Seems unfit for young, impressionable Christians in formation, believers on shakey ground and people who have no spiritual formation whatsoever. True, a person reading/watching HP isn’t performing sorcery themselves. Note: Rev. T. Euteneuer, President of Human Life Intl., author of Exorcism and the Church Militant, and a priest who practices the rite of exorcism, warns against HP & the Twilight series.
Had to replace the Santa’s-bringing-you-presents lie w/ the story of Saint Nicholas as part of trying to keep our children’s focus on what they’re giving Jesus for his birthday and not all on what they’re getting. I know, I know - I grew up w/ the guy too.

I’m sorry, I HAVE to defend Harry Potter.Have to.

It has meant so much to my life. Thanks to that book, I am a writer. Besides the Bible and Catechism, they have probably taught me more about morality, and it is a very CHRISTIAN series, like the Chronicles of Narnia, then any other books I’ve ever read.

I mean, doesn’t, “You should have died rather than betray your friends!”

…sound very similar too, “No greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”?

The wizardry is merely used as a clever parallel to discrimination, with muggle-borns being discriminated against and wizards being favored.

If you have read the books and still think them a bad influence, well, I couldn’t possibly, possibly disagree more.

I agree with most of your post. However, alternative therapies such as Aromatherapy are not a sign of witchcraft. Also, herbal teas, herbal medicines, herbal oils, and herbal cookery are not signs of witchcraft either. Many people, including Catholics, participate in these things and they are not guilty of any sins, much less witchcraft. Yes, some witches do use Aromatherapy and herbal things. However, those things are not necessarily a sign that someone is involved in witchcraft.

The main danger of witchcraft, I think, is the loss of being in a state of grace. Of course, there are also other dangers such as the danger of demonic harassment and possession. One must be very careful because witchcraft can easily lead to demonic activity in one’s home or demonic activity against a person. I recommend the Saint Michael the Archangel prayer.

Abortion could be seen as a child sacrifice to a pagan God. In the Bible the Jews turned away from God and sacrificed their children to a baal or false God. This is happening today. Although we presume people are Christian, very often they’re not. I had a Catholic friend who had an abortion. She consulted a medium and got involved in aspects of witchcraft such as burning incense at home.

It appears to me that you are a cafeteria witchcraft opposer.

please be nice this person is trying to help bring attention to a growing problem. act more like Catholics and educate instead of make him feel like an idiot. shame on you.

one thing to point out from my own experience is that i read harry potter and never liked reading before and loved it so much that i found reading enjoyable which actually lead me to reading the Bible and found Jesus and never looked back. i love being Catholic and wouldnt have been if i didnt pick up harry potter and the order of the phoenix and all the others.

harry potter made me Catholic

may God bless you all
