i beat myself up after and during i mortal sin, should i be doing this or no?

Please don’t.
Your only task should be going to confession - right away, and try to change so that it doesn’t happen again.

Like brutal smacking and head slamming? Assuming you’re leaving bruises, please stop this! Perhaps you should seek out some help?

Define “beat yourself up”.

Do you mean that you accuse yourself of the sin? That is what a well-formed conscience does.

Do you feel bad about the sin? That is what a well-formed conscience does.

Do you actually hit your body? That is a for of penance that is only to be done under Spiritual Direction.

Yes! Please add clarification.
Respect your body: Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

Guilt - a realization that what you said, did, or otherwise enacted was not in the good for yourself or others.

Shame - a realization that you are broken, something is wrong with you, you have less value than others because of what you are or what you said or what you did

Please, we are all sinners and have made some bad choices even while making the choice being fully aware that we are making the wrong choice, your experience is not unique to you, I’d say a few other billion people feel and experience what you do.

Guilt - great, feel it, it will work with your repentance and fuel your penance

Shame - how can you be shameful of the existence that God provided for you? Your body? Your mind? Your soul? How can God’s image and likeness in you ever be broken or valued less?

What will help ease the guilt is 2 things … make a good act of contrition during your daily prayers … make full intentions of making it to the next possible confession … did I say 2? … keep going to Mass, if you haven’t made it to confession, go to the Priest during communion and cross your arms and get a blessing! In my personal experience, when I have sin on my soul and I can’t receive the eucharist, Oh, Em, Gee … it’s like being locked out of your house, in the cold, with barely a bathrobe on, and raining, the only thing you want to do is get back in the house (by going to confession and making things right with God).

In sin, okay to feel guilt, but try to stay away from shame, my 2¢

If you are going to mortify yourself, do so before you sin. I would speak with Father about this.

I know what you mean.

Sometimes I feel like Catholics put to much emphasis on sin. To the point it gets discouraging. For a while I would go to Confession multiple times a week. And even though my sins for forgiven I began to feel like I could never live up to being a good Catholic. It is hard.

We should focus more on the good we do. As far as I can tell, if God is truly going to damn every person on earth who dies with a mortal sin without reconciliation, my guess is 6.5 out of the 7 billion people on earth are going straight to hell. That’s just the reality of it. Is God really that harsh? I think not. I am not undermining the sacrament of Reconciliation in any way but God is all forgiving and we need to start focusing more on the good we do than only the bad. It really can drive a person insane after a while.

No. You need to resolve to stay out of it and keep trying.

We are with you on that!
