I was Baptized Methodist as an infant. I married Catholic and am raising our children Catholic. What do I need to do to become a part of the Catholic community?

Hi lisasully,
I suggest you approach your Parish Priest (probably in parish your husband goes) to inquire about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RICA).
From what I understand, you will undergo guidance either with your priest or an RCIA team with regards to the unique concepts of Catholicism (e.g the 7 sacraments, transubstantiation).
As you have already been baptised a Christian, you will only need to undergo confirmation (where the Holy Spirit will begin to grow and guide your life). You will then be in full communion with the church.
That’s about it in a nutshell.
(To the more well-versed forumers) Please do correct me if there is any inaccurate information.

All you need to do is undergo RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). My wife was a former Methodist also. You have to dedicate yourself at least once or twice a week for night classes on Catholicism. The entire process usually takes about a year - give or take.
Since Methodists already have a valid baptism, you will be asked to renounce your previous association with the Methodist church and embrace the Catholic Church and its teachings.

RCIA is the usual and prefered method of entering the Church.
But what you can do in addition is to study on your own. Find books that will help you understand the faith, and might even ask your husband a question or two
RCIA is a wonderful program, it usually starts in September and end 4 weeks after Easter (The Easter Vigil is when YOU come into the Church). Remember though, that the program only lasts for about a year, and our faith has been around for close to 2000Years, so you can understand just by this timeline, that RCIA cannot cover everything.
Read solid Catholic information and take any questions from that reading to your RCIA team (when you join) and do also what I did…I drove my RCIA sponsor crazy with questions.

Welcome, Lis. Eventhough you decided not to join RCIA, you did the right thing, for the sake of the children. You chose to set aside yourself, so the Children will not confused between Catholicism and Methodist. That is a very kind of you. You already are a Catholic to me.
