I would also include how people should dress for Mass for both genders.

Examples –

Women / Girls - modest shirts/blouses/sweaters with skirts that are not tight & and reach the knees at minimum (non tight dressy pants/trousers instead if not a skirt wearing person), dresses that reach the knees or below, no sleeveless items; headcovering of some kind is preferred like a chapel veil, scarf, mantilla, hat etc

Men / Boys - Nice pants or khakis with either a polo shirt (or preferably a button down dress shirt), jacket and tie optional

Both genders: dress shoes preferred, no sandals, no trainers/tennis shoes, no athletic apparel, etc.
I think this would also be very good, but I think it should be written in such a way as to leave the reader with the impression that this expectation should be carried over to when he or she attends the OF as well.

Thank you for all of these questions. Does anyone have any more questions along the lines of, ‘why do we receive the Holy Eucharist on the tongue’, or, ‘is this the regular Mass but just in Latin?’ - things like that~

I think those are fine examples of questions that can be answered as well. In fact, I think those are especially important.

Why do we receive Holy Communion on the tongue and kneeling? Why are EMHCs not used? (Mention something like EMHCs really aren’t needed, as distributing Communion in that manner is usually very fast, and that EMHCs are generally overused anyways)

Isn’t this just the regular mass in Latin?

Why does the priest hold his fingers to his thumbs in the Eucharistic Prayer, something not done in the regular mass? (So as to not profane the Hosts with any unclean particles that he might touch, and so as to not drop any piece of Christ’s Body that might break off between his fingers)

What are the different types of mass, and what is different about them? (Low, Missa Cantata, Solemn High).

My overall advice is to keep answers short and sweet. Nobody will be interested if you have a page long response to as to why the priest incenses the offerings in circles rather than laterally like everything else.

Also, make sure the piece is very attractive. Don’t make it look like a military memo or put it in some goofy font like Comic Sans and have sixty different colors. It should be mature and subdued in color (if there is any color), but still a very attractive item, something people wouldn’t want to throw away. Explain things well, but don’t be conciliatory. You can be gentle and thorough without being conciliatory. Be extremely neutral in explanations. Don’t dictate, but at the same time, as I said, don’t be conciliatory. Give facts in the explanations, and leave the "sobeautifulplzcome"s for a different part. Talk about things that people might not expect but will usually end up liking, like the Gregorian Chant and sacred polyphony. Also, don’t degrade the OF. Use the word “beauty” in your convincing paragraphs a lot.

Our Latin Mass community has been asked by a local Shrine to put on a workshop for people interested learning more about the Traditional Latin Mass. I would like to put together a simple FAQ pamplet for them, so I need to know what kinds of basic questions people may have about the Latin Mass.
I didn’t put this thread in the Traditional Catholic section because most of them already know the Latin Mass - I need questions from people that have never been or have only been a few times.
I ask people to simply put their questions, or for those that have been a couple of times, what information would make their experience at the Latin Mass better next time.

Please, please no arguments or debates - I really just need this info to better serve the people that will be coming to our workshop.

Thank you~
The Latin Mass Society of Davao (in the Philippines) has held a workshop for the lay. Find them on Facebook and try to work with them to help you out with your workshop (like provide their materials).

A couple of things of note here. The OF (the normative Mass) is also in Latin, or at least it’s Latin-based if vernacular is used. And much of the Latin text has not changed. I think it behooves all Catholics to be aware of that. Furthermore receiving on the tongue or standing has nothing to do with the Rite or TLM itself. It’s just that certain (more rigid) disciplines were in effect in 1962 which have since been relaxed; for example, fasting. One may receive at a TLM with only one hour of fasting where in 1962 he or she would have had to fast for three hours before Mass. And today the priests generally accommodate those people who can’t kneel for communion in the TLM.

ProVobis, I think you have been misunderstanding the purpose of this thread all along, from your anwers.

The OP isn’t looking for answers to the questions, but for the questions themselves. The OP wants to gather a list of questions that those not familiar with the TLM might ask, with a view to answering them. Things that might strike them as strange, for instance.

People might be confused about things that might not occurr to the rest of us. For instance, I once had a parishioner ask me, what was the little tinkling bell which was rung when the chalices were purified. It turned out they were referring to the jacket buttons on someone’s sleeve knocking against the rim of the chalice when he was drying it with a purificator.

Then I guess I am misunderstanding the purpose and I apologize. I have no questions to add to the “list.”

What is a “high” mass vs. “low” mass?
The responses are sung, usually by the choir. This is a simplistic explanation.
Why does the priest not face the congregation?
Common misconception, it not about the congregation, the priest and congregation face ad orientum together as the mass is being offered.
The vestments may look different. Why?
I do not know this one , but a guess would be that the answer would be found in antiquity.
Is it ok to say the rosary during the mass like my grandmother did?
You can do that before or after and participate with your whole mind in the mass. At least read the translation of the prayers as they are being recited in Latin.
How do we “participate” if we cannot understand?
?
There is typically a booklet with a translation side by side. Latin on the left and English/other on the right. Following is relatively easy, some have even explanations of the whys of certain gestures an history behind the prayer.👍

God Bless

LOL, I think more than one person is misunderstanding as a lot of people are giving answers.

Here are some questions:
  • Do we say Amen after receiving on the tongue?
  • Do we say the Pater Noster along with the priest?
  • Do we Genuflect after the Sanctus?
  • Do we exchange the sign of peace?
Don’t answer. They’re just questions😃

I wouldn’t know where to start. I’ve heard people ask whether the TLM even counts for Sunday. Or is it Vatican II. Or is it even Catholic.

Yes, this~

Thank you for the attachment. I will still continue to veil for both forms of the Mass without hesitation and worry about what others think of me.
