If God gave us beer and coffee because he loves us, then he gave us cigarettes for the same reason.

The health risks are not that much greater. At least, the health risks are minimal in comparison to the side effects of the medications I have to take because of my status as a veteran psych patient, without cause, I won’t go there. Prescription cigarettes?

As for marijuana, I do not use it myself but I can understand that many would feel the same way about “pot” as some do about beer or coffee.

Of course, all of it, including beer, and even coffee, should be controlled for use under the age of 21. I od’d on the use of late-night coffee in college, not making the connection that I couldn’t get to sleep until 3 and couldn’t get up in time for class because I was going out for coffee at the local social spot at 11.

Also of course, physical purity contributes to spiritual purity, and all of this, beer, coffee, cigarettes–and marijuana–are indulgences deleterious to moral purity. However, so long as they can be given up for cause–as required according to the purposes of the Lord, I think they are okay, as so much of the time we NEED that comfort that God gives us because He loves us in this fast-paced world full of material riches that take us away from ourselves and our God.

All of the above cater toward introspection and reflection, and the sharing of LOVE.

Dear LynneHelen, I cannot quite agree with all you have said.

God didn’t give us cigarettes etc. All of the things mentioned dear friend are processed by people from natural products.
The atomic bomb is produced out of naturally existing things, which doesn’t mean we should accept the product of an atomic bomb as a gift of God.

God doesn’t make beer, coffee. People put a number of products together to make beer, it doesn’t exist alone as created matter.
God doesn’t roll up marijuana or tobacco leaves and set fire to them, drawing the smoke into our lungs. That is really not very sane behavior when you really think about it! People do those things. And the negative health results are well-documented, an the one does create psychological problems, the other considerably raises the death-toll in our nations.

And, only one of those products is sold to raise funds to build a monestery for Carmelite monks in Wyoming 👍

A caveat: I am under the influence of said natural substance, derived from the seed of the Coffea Arabica plant, as I post this. The freshly-brewed aroma is wonderful.

👍 Woot woot for the Mystic Monks! My brother is going to visit them in June and might (if it’s God’s will) be a Br. to more than just me soon.

And, I’m here to tell you that it is simply the greatest coffee that I have ever had I mean it really perks you up in the morning or afternoon or like when you are paying bills at 3AM or polishing the silverware just 'cuz or re-folding the towels or whenever you feel yourself dragging a little bit or someone comes by or you really are into that informercial or…

lynnehelen,

i agree. all of the above have their place. all can do good.

like most things, can be used for good or bad. it’s up to us.

I’ve never heard of coffee causing psycological problems. I drink at least one cup of it in the morning when I get to work. The warm liquid soothes my throat, which is sometimes soar in the morning. I don’t really notice any other effects. I think I’d have to drink a whole lot of coffee to even get as much as a headache, much less suffer psychological symptoms. (Probably as much as four of five cups.) The only negative effects I can think of is staining one’s teeth.

Do they sell K-cups?

you cant compare coffee to cigarettes

Coffee is good for you in some ways - Cigarettes are not good for you in anyway at all

even beer is ok in moderate consumption - and pot can help people but Cigarettes or any tobacco is healthwise a BIG no -and big waste of money

Alcohol is harmless in moderate amounts, and, in natural conditions, is easier to get/make than pure water.

But our breathing systems are just in no way adapted to inhale combustion products. God never intended us to do that, and that applies to pot as much as to
tobacco.

“All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial…” St. Paul, I believe.

And as a coffee-lover/recovering addict, coffee can have many harmful effects on the body - especially on the adrenal system. Adrenal fatigue/dysfunction is a REAL though undiagnosed problem in American society, due to an extremely stressful lifestyle and TOO much caffeine. I drink decaf now because I still feel I “need” something in the morning. Yeah, it’s staining my teeth. My dentist told me to get off coffee because of my TMJ and he said it was not about the caffeine. He said it had something to do with COFFEE and how it works.

Like alcohol, some can drink it, but we really shouldn’t indulge like the culture does. Cigarettes are just wack! 😉 God bless!

It is a certified fact that second hand smoke does cause lung cancer in people.
If that is a fact, then what does that mean for first hand smoke?
It also harms other organs in the body as well. The heart and skin especially, and even others.

Please don’t do that, both for you and others.

Remember bad example? we are accountable.

If you need weed, then there is a problem.
If you don’t start something, then you don’t have the pain of stopping.
It impairs driving. It is harmful to the lungs.
We are also to obey laws.

Too many people start out drinking one beer a day.
Next you know, it is two.
Then three.
This may take a while, but that is how trouble develops.

Just don’t start. Then you don’t have to stop.

Almost everyone who starts these things want to stop. Its hard. Don’t start.

Sounds as tho you’re taking the wrong turn.
If we don’t pray faithfully everyday, we will take the wrong turn.
Sin is easy. Only grace conteracts sin. That we get by praying.
Everyday. No prayer, no grace. No grace, lots of sin.

O blood and water which gushed for from the heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us,
I trust in you.

Say that prayer every hour. More often if you can. Peace.

Use of marijuana, as it is almost always to the point of intoxication, is a mortal sin.

I quite agree. God didn’t “give us” any of those things – they are all artificial constructs of man and his fallen nature. ( OK, I might concede somewhat as to coffee beans as they are a naturally-growing product; still, it took mankind to discover artificial things that had to be done to them such as breaking open the pod and roasting the bean in order to make the beverage.)

God didn’t give us the printing press – man invented it. It can be used for good (printing Bibles) or for ill (printing pornography). God didn’t give us beer (despite what Ben Franklin wrote) cigarettes, the beverage known as coffee, or anything else that is a combination of ingredients or actions man puts together himself. The raw ingredients, like the printing press, can be used for good (grain made into bread) or ill ( grain used to distill intoxicating beverages used to excess).

Natural stuff created by God, can be used for good purposes, and used for wrong purposes. Penicillin and opiates are natural, and have benefits used medicinally. But overuse of them can be bad. Hallucinogenic Mushrooms and LSD in ergot mold growing on rye grains, flour and bread do not have benefits, and can do permanent damage to the brain if used excessively. They are natural God-created items, but their use is to be avoided.

Beer and coffee can be beneficial in moderation, but problematic if over-consumed. Marijuana has limited therapeutic benefit for certain medical conditions. Otherwise, like cigarettes, it is detrimental to health. All of these are used recreationally, but not all are good to indulge in.

You really can’t compare a drink made from coffee beans, or a drink made from hops, with a [profane adjective] that has rat poision, jet fuel and the stuff they used to gas the Jews mixed into it.

Beer, coffee and dope also doesn’t kill 50% of its users in a horrible manner.

Tobacco maybe, but ciggies, no way.

Fags are man made mixture of natural ingredients and not so natural, what is mixed into them is toxic and quite frankly, astonishly amazing in a frightful way. God had nothing to do with the creation of such a product. I honestly hope it is banned.

In honesty I feel I cannot be a bona fide Christian until I have stopped smoking cigarettes. But I simply cannot quit. I struggle to keep it down to a pack a day at times, other times, way more. Something just pickes me up and moves me to go to the pharmacy or corner store and buy them. I have smoked for so long that my brain doesn’t function without them. Under certain circumstances brain function simply ceases until I pick one up and light it.

I could go on. I quit while I was carrying my son, coffee also, and this was a delight to me. But we moved from a progressive area (out West) to a place back up North in the East where just about everybody smoked and I picked it up again.

Then, I spent two years slowly quitting and then finally gave it up altogether, it’s a sad story, I went back to it fiendishly for a period of time.

I’ve given up the hand-wringing. If God wants me to quit smoking he will help me. Meanwhile I remain “on the fence” in my religious life, constantly struggling.
