A deacon really should know better than to interrupt someone at prayer. Then again, so should the lay faithful. Sigh.

Hello.

We pray the rosary before Mass. Nobody seems to want to carry on a discussion while that’s being done.

I wish that all these many various people would communicate perhaps with sign language -
as I kneel in the pew and do try my best to communicate with God - in his home.
There’s 168 hours in a week -
and only so much time, there, before God, and the Eucharist.
A woman behind me, 6 rows, was talking about her dog…
the man responded about how he had a dog when he was 16…
the dog got hit by a car…oh what a shame…you must of felt…etc…
I mean, it’s tough not being distracted.
I kneel / sit in the 5th row too !

Your point is well taken.

Our focus should be on the Person in the tabernacle.

I’m starting to feel like I’m the selfish one for wanting to pray after Mass, if I’m the only one doing so. I can go sit outside somewhere, or in my car. It’s better than getting disturbed, then irritated.

It’s sad that people are so uncomfortable with silence, that they can’t even be silent before / during / after Mass. Oh, well.

He seemed uncomfortable being there at Church, and the tone of his comments came out like a kind of bravado to impress the woman beside him. The group that came seemed confused and amused, if that makes any sense. Still you never know, they may have gone home, and done some thinking.

Can anyone sympathize with me ?
Yes , I can sympathize with you .

On weekdays we have Eucharistic Adoration for an hour before Mass , and it’s silent in church .

On Sundays there is too much noise and I have decided just to accept it , otherwise I end up winding myself up which is not good preparation for the Eucharist .

The Holy Father has many times called for silence in church . I wish Catholics would listen to him.

“When we go to Mass, maybe we arrive five minutes before, and we start to chit-chat with those in front of us,” the Pope said . However, “it is not a moment for chit-chat.”

“It is a moment of silence for preparing ourselves for dialogue, a time for the heart to collect itself in order to prepare for the encounter with Jesus,” he said, adding that “silence is so important.”

Yes, weekdays are quiet, people more reverent. Sundays are noisy at my Church, too. Grin and bear it. At least they’re there.

I’m sure many don’t even know that the church should be quiet before Mass. If one grows up in a parish where it’s normal for people to chit chat in church, one is not doing it to annoy others or to be rude - one doesn’t realize it’s inappropriate. The priest should set the expectation and say something from the pulpit, and then enforce it. I imagine most people will respect the priest’s directive, but for those who don’t, instruct the ushers that if someone is carrying on a loud conversation, it’s ok to approach them and ask them to lower their voices. Parishioners will get the message quickly.

What he got was a crowd of vendors hawking cheap trinkets, beggars, street people, the whole spectrum. He was taken aback.
There’s a meme in that thread that points out that knocking over tables and using one’s belt as a whip is on the table when discussing “what would Jesus do?” . . .

Seems that that “meme” is almost universal, those being offended have really jumped on this thread. There are those of us who believe that if a parish is a family, then Jesus is happy to have his children in his presence and isn’t all that offended by the noise. If He isn’t, I’m not. But it does seem a very minority view here. Personally, I think putting up with the noise is better than 30% mass attendance.

Chit chat people - are like pigeons who have landed on the cross -
I know it’s not nice to say, but they’re Christian pigeons - that’s the new term !

Lisa, as much as I would like to see this happen, that would only make “the ministers of hospitality” the bad guys. That is not their job. If it gets loud, a disgruntled parishioner will do it. Otherwise, an usher telling someone to be quiet would be an insult to them and most would feel bad and probably leave, IMO.

Depends on the parish. It’s their job in our parish, though we don’t have people talking in church, but if kids get too noisy during Mass and the parents do nothing about it, the ushers were instructed to say something. In my opinion parishioners should not be put in a position to deal with other parishioners’ behavior. But, I’ve never heard of ushers referred to as ministers of hospitality either.

I went to Reconciliation at another parish, thinking I’d stay for Mass. But hearing the electric guitar and bass warming up…sorry.
At my church it’s the piano and singing before Mass that messes up my concentration.
