Mystery Over 15th-Century Drilled Skull SolvedFeb 9, 2015 12:10 PM ET // by Rossella Lorenzi

" Beatified in 1771 and canonized by Pope Francis on May 12, 2013, the so-called “martyrs of Otranto,” whose identities are largely unknown, are now the patron saints of the city of Otranto.

They all met their ends on Aug. 14, 1480, following a 15-day siege by the Ottoman force commanded by Gedik Ahmed Pasha. During the assault, all Otranto men over the age of 50 were slaughtered, while women and children under the age of 15 were either slain or sold into Albanian slavery.

The remaining men, including more than 800 exhausted survivors, were told to convert to Islam. As they refused, they were taken to a hill and beheaded one by one. "

I make no comment, draw your own conclusions.

At least they had a choice of converting to Islam, unlike the victims of ISIS we have heard about recently. Was there an ISIS before the US invasion of Iraq?

i think the beheadings in those days were done in a more quick & merciful way’ like with an ax on a block or one swift slice with a long sharp sword

this throat hacking & sawing and head displaying on video is a definitely a new IS twist on an old & barbarous method of execution maybe for efficincies’ sake they will build a few guillotines

soon they will feel the storm of God’s justice

Same people who brought down the Trade Center buildings just under another name and more barbarous.

Were they reacting to what the US did in Iraq? Was everything that the US did in Iraq completely above board and civilized? After all, Americans are very civilized, aren’t they? I notice that ISIS puts its victims in orange jumpsuits. Doesn’t this mean that they are sending a hidden message by doing so?

What year are you referring to in your first question?
The World Trade Center attack and collapse was in 2001.

There is nothing new here. Since the beginning of the false religion of Islam by it’s founder Mohamed, there has been war between Islam and Christianity and Judaism. Since the 600’s we have been fighting to stop the islamization of the Mediterranean and European countries. No one should be surprised that it is happening again. Some think that civilization has advanced to a point where barbarism is a thing of the past. Wrong. Barbarism, and all evil is ingrained in the human makeup. Since Cain slew Abel this has been going on. And in our enlightened, sophisticated, evolved world of today, it seems to be getting worse. Deny God, Deny Christ Jesus, and this is what you get.

Are you trying to justify their actions?

Wow, anything about the Middle East and some make this about America once again.

ISIS rose in response to the Assads in Syria.

The Assads have controlled Syria for around 40 years, read one’s history.

The Soviet Union before and Russia now has supported the iron-fisted dictatorship.

There’s nothing hidden in what they do. Their message is convert to Islam or have your head cut off. If you’re a woman or child, you are subject to rape and sexual slavery. The orange jumpsuits are merely a mocking of Guantanamo.

Your comment suggests a moral equivalency between the US action in Iraq and what ISIS is doing. Are you suggesting that the US and ISIS are moral equals?

You are right that there is a very long history of beheading as a means of execution.

However, in 1480, they were not video taping it and sending it around the world instantly. what we have now is a very calculated process of intimidation.

Yes, they were reacting to what the US did in Iraq, but perhaps not for the reason you are thinking.

The issues are literally centuries old, and revolve around the tensions that have been building for a long time; this in plain language is a power struggle.

It takes a white board and a good deal of room to chart out who the players are, who they are aligned with, who their supporters are, and what their objectives are. The short list at the top of the board are the Sunnis and the Shia, along with who the dictators are or have been, who have kept a lid on the violence until recently.

While there are elements of what you describe in your post, this is not the driving force of what is playing out on the ground right now. While undoubtedly if it is not brought into check, it will spread to Christians and Jews, it is essentially a war within the two main stems of Islam.

Are you trying to justify their actions?
A good number of people in the west hate the west. So, in being against everything western, they find themselves on the side of some of the worst people on earth. Justifying it, then, takes quite a bit of work and the adoption of some truly bizarre views of history.

But I think one of the most amusing ironies besetting them is their underlying assumption that the “non-westerners” of the world are incapable of coming up with their own evils. The assumption is they’re so stupid and inept that they have to rely on the west to even be bad. It’s “wogs begin at Calais”; the classic “colonial attitude” at its very worst.

ISIS seems to have arisen not directly because of Assad, but because of the power vacuum created, a ways back, by the overthrow of Saddam.

Well, actually, it is more a matter of convert to the branch of Islam (Sunni) and to the degree of strictness they demand; they are whacking Sunnis as well as Shia, and anyone else who gets in their way. They are not mumbling prose when they say they intend to set up the caliphate.

And they are doing military training with a vengeance, and tactically and weapons wise they are more sophisticated than Hezbollah or Hamas has shown so far, just to name a couple of long term players.

Somebody needs to get a lot more sophisticated as to their financing network, among other things.
