Being Catholic is whatever I think it is for me

When I teach this portion of the precepts of Catholicism to my confirmation candidates I go to the old testament and reverence the commandment to keep only the Sabbath. Then we discuss how it was practice by the Jews. I then go to the new testament and have them find examples of Jesus teaching in the temple and keeping the Sabbath. We then go to the catechism of the catholic church to explain why Sunday is the Lords day and how going to mass is doing what Jesus did and commanded.

We have effectively lost a generation, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose another one. Equally as important as what the Church teaches is understanding why She does. In faith formation I think kids should be encouraged to ask questions, and be given the tools to get the authentic Catholic answers, because they are always logical and compelling. Else they will ask questions outside of religious education, and the people answering them won’t be Catholics.
I agree with this. It sounds like a very good approach to teaching and we can certainly form the upcoming generations in the right way.

That sounds excellent. It gives the commandment some weight and also connects it with Jesus and the Church.

Thank you for passing on the faith to children through your ministry of faith formation also. For me, it’s one of the greatest works a human being can do (if done well and rightly) more than achievements that get acclaim and recognition. I am so thankful - eternally grateful for those who taught me.
