I think in her past she was Catholic, but had a bit of a rough time in life and was what she called a sinner. She was āsavedā by the SDA and now looks at the Catholic Church though saved eyes.
I will pray for her, but talk of religion just is frustrating. I do wonder when I am saying I am going some Bible reading before bed what she thinks.
Thanks everyone!
The JWs I know are the same. And their publications are blatantly anti-Catholic.Ever talk to a SDA? They donāt like Catholics and are not afraid to say so. If I hear one more time from her I worship idolsā¦
I suppose there will just be unreasonable people.I donāt think that works, with my ex girlfriend, I tried showing her by actions that I was not this evil person portrayed by her Church. I know she saw it, but at the end she didnāt see it.
There isnāt a religious discussion to be had with her at this stage, her heart is not sincere.I just donāt know how to answer a Seventh Day Adventist I know. She posts such hate about the Catholic Church and just is so defensive. Is it a lost cause?
Perhaps just try being a friend and let the spirit flow through your actions.āI think we may accept it as a rule that whenever a personās
religious conversation dwells chiefly, or even frequently,
on the faults of other peopleās religions, she/he is in a bad condition.ā
Thank Matthew, that was very kind of you.It is very sad that so many people are taught prejudice and hatred for those of other faiths and beliefs.
I find the Catholic Mass to be a beautiful celebration of love for Jesus Christ and my heart was warmed by seeing the sincere and deeply held devotion to God on the faces of the Catholics there.
Seven Day Adventists are a very anti-Catholic group. In fact even many Protestants do not see them as orthodox Christians. I would study up on them to understand her. They are also pretty anti-Protestant as well because they would see that a majority of Protestants are still too influenced by the Catholic Church in things like Christmas, Easter, Sunday church instead of on the Sabbath (Saturday). If she is some facebook type of friend and posts these things on social media, you do have a couple of choices which is to let her know that what she is posting is offensive and then un-friend her so you are not disturbed or harassed any more. Then I would pray for her.I just donāt know how to answer a Seventh Day Adventist I know. She posts such hate about the Catholic Church and just is so defensive. Is it a lost cause?
They have a common root. They are all ultimately fallout from a mid 1800s self appointed preacher named William Miller who set a date for the return of Christ in 1844. Many other groups too including Church of God and the like. Both JWs and SDAs bristle if you say one came from the other because each thinks the other group is āreally weirdā.The Jehovah Witnesses are very likely an offshoot of the SDA, sounds like they are similar in their selective reasoning.
That is the way they do it. They donāt put their name on anything. They even claim the chap running it, brought in by the local church is āindependentā. Often held at a hotel or some neutral place first few nights then moved to the local church. I was involved in doing this more than once. One church we were instructed to cover over the SDA sign out front with a banner for the seminar and remove everything including literature that woudl let anyone know we were SDAs before we brought the people in. When I asked why the rationale was ⦠if they know we are SDAs they wonāt comeā¦I went to an end times seminar when I was new to town. I didnāt know it was run by SDA.
You do find both. Like any group they have different camps but what the seminar taught is in fact true blue SDA doctrine. What gets said by their prophetess etc is worse. They were formed in the extreme anticatholic movements of New England in the mid to late 1800s and have retained a lot of it.Wow! I was shocked at how anti-catholic they were.
I had a naturopath who was SDA and I loved her. She was so sweet. I never heard anything anti-catholic from her so I was shocked to hear what I heard at this seminar. SDA are nice people, but paranoid about the Catholic church.
Recently on the SDA tv channel there was an interview with a former Catholic and she became SDA because of a seminar she attended regarding the book of Daniel. Its taught to them from birth. Their end time view centers around the notion the Catholic church, pagans and governments all over the world uniting to persecute them and force them to keep Sunday. This added to the normal protestant ideas against Catholicism.
Just be nice to them, let it roll off your back. You never know. I was born and raised SDA myself yet here I am with my wife also raised SDA. I was about as anti catholic as you could get once.
Their fascination with Daniel is essentially it is their identity. Back in 1840ās William Miller sets the dates of 1843 and then October 22, 1844 as the date for Christs return. This was all built on Daniel and Revelation etc. In the fallout from that not happening the SDAs formed. They did not simply admit this was wrong. Rather they insisted the date was correct and hten declared that āChrist moved from the holy place to the most holy place in the heavenly sanctuaryā and this became a key doctrinal plank for them. Their entire focus is on what they call āthe three angels messageā ⦠you probably saw that show on 3ABN 3 angels broadcasting network ]. They believe it is their job to spread their version of the gospel to all the world before the second coming can happen, a key part of which includes the declaration of the usual stuff catholic church corrupt, pope is declared to be antichrist etc. ] with the added benefit they believe the protestants and catholics and pagans and civil governments the world over will unite and persecute them right before the second coming. What is the fascination with the book of Daniel with SDAs and how do they use it to draw Catholics out of the CC?
Thanks for you story, Kathleen.I heard there are other SDA congregations who do not hold on to anti-Catholic positions.
However, my friend grew up in an affluent area of the city, went to Catholic schools, had a secular university education but encountered Christ in the Scripture Jesus movement of the early 70ās.
Later she got married to a fellow Catholic and they went off to go to some type of post grad schooling back east. They were exposed to the SDAās.
They came to my house one night showing me if I believe the Bible contains the Word of God, then how can I be Catholic because the Church changed the wording of the 10 commandments, and it is putting itself above God in how it places the bible underneath itself.
Anyway, it challenged me, but I was beginning to pray the rosary with much devotion. I felt bound to my Catholic faith through the rosary and so held my ground and didnāt say much either in response to them.
Later her mother went to visit their church. The pastor knew she was catholic. He began to go on a tirade about the Catholic Church. She got up and began to walk out.
When she was walking out, he hurled insults towards her and her Catholicismā¦also in front of her daughter and son-in-law.
When they returned home to start their work, they told me they left that cultā¦I use cult here because it is a gathering based on hatred and ignorance using itself as source of God, and uses threat of damnation if they leave itā¦They studied about the life of the founder and her involvement with numerology.
But they never returned to the Church. Later they divorced, while they also attended evangelical gatherings based on the Bible and following the Holy Spiritā¦and I had moved away. Later my friend came down for a visit to present her new husband to me who was going into similar work through her. I lost contact with her raising my family.
I found out she passed awayā¦didnāt want any friends with her, her older brother dying right before her diagnosisā¦she refused any spiritual guidance and gathering, and the workers who ended up caring for her and telling her to please contact usā¦told me she had a memorial in a park because she liked the outdoorsā¦no obituary, her body crematedā¦and it no where to be found to make final respects.
I am having a Mass said for her and am inviting people to remember this dayā¦so sad.
You can go to Catholic school but it doesnāt mean you have received the Catholic faith from them. Such are so vulnerable to going into on denominationalsā¦
When we die to Christ our body belongs now to Himā¦our Catholic faith binding.
I donāt know what my assistance could have done in her dying daysā¦the Dr telling me her last 4 or 5 weeks were filled with much sufferingā¦and I work in hospice and palliative careā¦they had to put her into a hospitalā¦a tragic death.
So her falling away began with the SDAāsā¦and if you keep going farther away from your Catholic faithā¦in her case, it looks like you end up with your own way of looking at Scriptureā¦and you follow your quirks and whimsyā¦so sad.
I donāt think there is anything you can really say to a SDA. They have no sense of Church of Christās humanity.
That date, October 22, 1844, became known as the Great DisappointmentTheir fascination with Daniel is essentially it is their identity. Back in 1840ās William Miller sets the dates of 1843 and then October 22, 1844 as the date for Christs return. This was all built on Daniel and Revelation etc. In the fallout from that not happening the SDAs formed.
