Being gay is in your genes

Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe it’s a mix of nature and nurture. Regardless of which, it doesn’t alter the Catholic stance one way or another, and has become a straw man.
That is the official stand by the CC. If people would accept it and leave it as such there would be no problem in the gay community and the vast majority of the population. The problem is a vocal minority who won’t let go. Some are sincere in holding to their incorrect beliefs, yet others are obvious using a hot button issue to appeal to the prejudices of their adherents. A blatant example of this is their contention that gay civil rights result in pedophiles and polygamists receiving similar civil rights. They conveniently overlook that a pedophilia act is statutory rape and that the legal status of polygamy is in flux it has nothing at to do with gays. To claim that gays should not lobby for their civil rights solely on the basis that undesirable groups will use similar tactics is ludicrous. Neither have anything at all to do with gay activism for gay civil rights. By their logic no one should lobby for civil rights.

Choice is a willful, deliberate decision-making. Like engaging in same-sexual activity.

Just because the factors are beyond genes (e.g., hormone exposure) doesn’t mean someone made a choice.

It isn’t a choice because it is self-evident that no one chooses (a deliberate, conscious act) to be attracted to the same sex. There doesn’t need to be elimination of every other possible reason.
Nothing is so simple. No one chooses a heroin addiction either, but they make decisions that lead them to that end. No one has ever said, ‘hey I think it would be great to be so addicted to heroin that I need to steal from my family to support my habit.’ Saying ‘who would choose it?’ isn’t sufficient to support any argument. Hormone exposure depends on how a person lives as well. The decisions you make affect your life and your body. A more active person has higher testosterone. Eating red meat raises testosterone levels. Many things affect hormone levels. Nothing is so simple as being either a choice or being genetic/biological. Our choices, our biology, and our environment all work together to form who we are.

Becoming addicted to heroin takes a deliberate act to shoot up heroin in the first place. Also, drug use is not common to mankind as sexual attraction is. Homosexuals just have the opposite order.

The Catholic Church herself does not answer how/why someone has same-sex attraction.

But there sure are many Catholics who seem to have it figured out that it must be some lifestyle choice.

For the life of me, I do not understand why someone feels the necessity to think that homosexual attraction must have been chosen through deliberate acts. Have you heard of anyone that said, “Yes, I decided to have gay/straight/bisexual attraction”?

Is it not enough to say, “God be with you on your journey of chastity/celibacy,” instead of placing shame and blame on people?

I just hope it’s a generational thing and that the younger people of Catholic faith are more reasonable and compassionate.

Issue, sexual attraction exists independent of actions; people don’t have addictions without contact with said things, but they do have sexual orientation without sex.

We are all born with a thorn in our heel and like St Paul, we are supposed to try to overcome this thorn. Same sex attraction is one type of thorn. Another is gluttony. Another is sloth. Another is greed. Another is pride.

All of us need to fight to gain some control of our human “natures” and to put on Christ. What makes the Catholic Church so amazing is that it lays out clear teaching even when it is not popular or easy. Following Christ is never easy and the road is wide and paved on the way to hell. I suspect that as something like homosexual sex becomes popular and the in thing or accepted, that it simply places more on that wide road. A loving Catholic when confronted with those who want to give excuse to evil should not be quiet, but speak out on what the Church teaches and to learn why so as to help those in need. Too many want to go along to get along or remain silent in the face of grave evil.

The teaching of the Church in regard to homosexuals and the gravely disordered act is clear and from what I understand is non negotiable for those who call themselves Catholic. Marriage is always and everywhere between one man and one woman. Again, settled teaching. Love the sinner, but that can never be love than means we enable the grave sin anymore than love would be giving the addict support to continue their addiction.

Is this true?
From what I recall, studies carried out on identical twins indicated there was no genetic link to homosexuality, as one twin could be hetero and the other gay. This latest ‘research’ was carried out on gay men, and as far as I am aware already living the gay lifestyle. Hence the environmental/societal changes they have met - either prior to their lifestyle choice, and/or by living the gay lifestyle could have induced epigenetic changes that may always be induced by homosexual males living out the gay lifestyle. Hence the gene pair ‘discovered’ may be a result of an epigenetic change that occurs in nature.

No genetic markers were apparent in female homosexuals.

I hope that makes sense. 🙂

science.howstuffworks.com/life/genetic/epigenetics.htm

Obviously, if one identical twin grows up in the castle slums and the other grows up in the king’s palace, they’re liable to develop into rather different people, no matter how similar their genes are. The field of epigenetics adds new fuel to this issue by shedding light on how environment, nutrition and social conditions affect how genes are expressed. Was the twin in the palace brought up by an abusive stepmother? Did the twin in the slums have to contend with a house full of pipe smoke? Did one eat gruel while the other feasted on fatty desserts? These factors can cause epigenetic changes that alter how each twin’s genes are expressed. Even a difference in diet could put one twin at risk for cancer and leave the other in the clear.

Your explanation is a tiny bit confusing. There is evidence that sexual preferences are influenced by a combination of many factors. Some we are aware of, some we suspect and some are unknown. Of these factors some we have control over some we do not, i.e. we do not choose our genes or our early environment. The CCC states:

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition;…

Many well intentioned Catholics emphasize the Church’s teaching on homosexual acts but for whatever reasons overlook or purposely disregard the church’s teachings re: choice for the homosexual condition. I am far from an expert on Church teachings but it appears that both homosexual acts and the denial of the Church’s teachings on lack of choice are both sinful. Perhaps equally so.

That is the justification given for the capitulation by APA to militant homosexuals who forced declassification of homosexuality. The decision that homosexuality is a normal variant of sexuality has been reached by consensus. Consequently, the supposed organization of mental health professionals have been pushing the research to go one way, justification of the controversial declassification. It has been four decades since, and the best analysis that can be made based on the few that appears to be representative and unbiased is this: the etiology of homosexuality is multi-factorial.

Dear InSearchofGrace,

Cordial greetings and a very good day. That was a jolly splendid post if I may say. All bang on target.

It is very telling that the American Psychiatric Association voted to exclude homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders. This change in perception rests upon the supposition that the homosexual condition is biologically determined and unchangeable. A great deal of the current literature focuses on the need to help homosexuals embrace their sexuality (in other words embrace a lifestyle that is intrinsically disordered, involving detestable and unnatural acts of depravity) and cope with discrimination. Indeed, there are those within the APA who have even been calling for a ban on reparative therapy to change the homosexual pre-disposition as if this cruel and even impossible (cf. I Cor. 6: 9-11).

Moreover, dear friend, now that homosexuality has attained non-pathological status it has become increasingly difficult to ask fundamental questions or to undertake research which dares to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy. As one commentator has put it, “this is and area, par excellence, where scientific objectivity has little chance of survival” (J. Bancroft).

Incontrovertably, dear friend, the APA is manifestly not objective and impartial and would appear to be favourably disposed to the homosexual activist movement. There is no homosexual ‘gene’ but sinful man must always find some ‘why’ to account for the fact that a minority of the population suffers with the homosexual condition. The Catholic faithful should not fall for this nonsense but treat it with the contempt that it so rightly deserves.

The homosexual condition is in any case not a mental illness (though it is often its cause) but rather sad evidence of man’s fallen estate on account of Original Sin. Moreover, man is already born into an imperfect world and brings with him a wounded nature that is continually manifesting itself in divers ways, homosexual deviant behaviour being just one such way. Unfortunately, dear friend, our personalities are complexes of all manner of sinful desires and no aspect of our humanity escapes unscathed and that includes our sexuality. We may, therefore, inherit various tendencies to revolt against the Maker’s good order of things and we may, alas, respond in a sinful way to the many influences to which we are subjected. This is simply a part of the fallen human condition and it is on this that we ought to focus. Catholics, therefore, should resist becoming embroiled in supposedly ‘scientific’ arguments that have more to do with defending and promoting homosexual vice as an alternative lifestyle. We are concerned not with some pseudo scientific classification of homosexuality but rather with morality and how homosexuality fits in with that framework.

Having said this, dear friend, I would not stop to deny that other issues have to be factored in as regards the development of a homosexual tendency (e.g. parent-child relationships; peer interactions; homosexual parent and of course child molestation). This is not a case of wishing to retreat into a supposedly simplistic analysis, however the homosexual condition must always be traced back to an unhappy consequence of the sinful Fall of our race, for that is its true genesis.

Finally, dear friend, a Catholic must always maintain that the homosexual predisposition originates with our wounded nature and is not a mental illness. As we all know the concept of illness can all too easily be expounded at the expense of the concept of moral failure - something which our morally degenerate age is very want to do. Moreover, to identify sinful actions as a sickness is surely a triumph of medicine over morals - indeed, it spells the end of all moral judgment, which is probably the ultimate objective of pseudo science.

God bless and thankyou for your excellent (name removed by moderator)ut to the discussion.

Warmest good wishes,

In Christos

I would imagine giving in to homosexual acts would be more sinful than overlooking Church teachings.

But the repeated emphasis on something that the Church doesn’t even teach for the purpose of fulfilling a sense of moral indignation does harm because it causes unnecessary emotional disturbance for those who are not more versed in official Church teachings. And it might propagate false ideas about what the Church believes and lead people/non-believers away.

From: Social Constructions of the Homosexual Phenomenon: The Politics of Homosexuality in the United States

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders. Thirty (forty) years later the debate rages on. Courts have been reluctant to grant homosexuals equal rights and protections, and public opinion waivers as to whether homosexuals should be considered normal and healthy. Why is the APA’s official position continually questioned? Why are people so entrenched in their positions?

…Much has been written – and still has yet to be written – in exploration of the homosexual phenomenon. The reader is encouraged to explore these additional resources.
Incontrovertably, dear friend, the APA is manifestly not objective and impartial and would appear to be favourably disposed to the homosexual activist movement. I have posted what the CCC says several times. The most recent was immediately prior to your post.

“2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition;…”.

I don’t want to take away from the more important part of the quote, namely, “They do not choose their homosexual condition.” Yet, responding to your statement, I want to ask a question: Correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t the above quote from the CCC at the very least indicate that it is ok with the CC to either believe or not believe that there is a “gay gene?”

We agree! 👍 Well mostly, Classification is a valid function of science. Determining whether the theory behind the classification is false or not is the work science.

In previous posts I have favorably commented on a study in which the author argues strongly for non-shared environmental epigenetic causes.

Neither Genes nor Choice: Same-Sex Attraction Is Mostly a Unique Reaction to Environmental Factors
[Journal of Human Sexuality 3:81-114 (2011)]

I believe he incorrectly dismisses the possibility of genetic factors too easily, but I leave that for others to dispute.

Forgive me frobert, but I don’t know where you’re getting that quote.

vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a6.htm
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
I believe SSAs are innate for the vast majority of people (and I believe OSAs are innate for the vast majority of people), but I have never heard that quote of yours from any Vatican source.

Edit: never mind, I found it:

Can someone please help me understand the difference between the two links I posted? Both are from the Vatican  .

I know of one family in which 3 different generations contain a lesbian, so there may be something to do with genes.

I solved the mystery.

Those words were removed 1997 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the
Faith, successor to the Holy Inquisition.

Please note that the above quoted revised text does not contain the words “They do not choose their homosexual condition.” Those words were removed because they opposed Catholic teachings. As such, Catholic and non-Catholic who are quoting those words, they are using an old Catechism that is outdated and which contains errors. They should throw away that version of the Catechism and get a copy of the Second Edition to ensure that what they quote is in harmony with Catholic doctrines and teachings.

Interesting that there is no explanation on how it is against the teachings and that search engines send you to the old version.

In office, Cardinal Ratzinger fulfilled his institutional role, defending and reaffirming official Catholic doctrine, including teaching on topics such as birth control, homosexuality, and inter-religious dialogue. During his period in office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith took disciplinary measures against some outspoken liberation theologians in Latin America in the 1980s and Jesuit priest Anthony de Mello. In 1983, he issued the Declaration on Masonic Associations which drew on Clarification concerning status of Catholics becoming Freemasons (itself issued by the Congregation 9 months before his becoming its prefect). The Congregation condemned liberation theology twice (in 1984 and 1986), accusing it of Marxist tendencies and of inciting hate and violence. Leonardo Boff, for example, was suspended, while others were reputedly reduced to silence. Cardinal Ratzinger also upheld the teaching against the ordination of women and stated that it belonged to the deposit of the faith, meaning that it was beyond the jurisdiction of any pope to change it.

I really wish the language would be more specific.

“Condition” – attraction, or engaging in same-sex activity and living in “the lifestyle”?

Yes, people choose to engage in activity. But is the Catholic Church now teaching that one chooses who they’re physically attracted to?

Appears that they changed a teaching once again. It is unintelligible to me how they can change something then change it something else and call it a tune up. I think it had more to do with their de-liberation and re-consevatization.

I don’t want to accuse the Church of changing stance, per se. Seems more like intentional ambiguousness in the language to appease both sides of the fence.

I also didn’t know the catechism can be…revised…to such an extent.

I’m kind of confused.

The Church claims that its Catechism “opposed Catholic teachings?” That makes me more uncomfortable than anything I’ve ever read about the Church. There has to be something deeper I’m not getting. I thought the Catechism only included infallible language from the Church? Is it not? If not, does this mean we have to actually research all ex cathedra statements ourselves to find out what has and hasn’t been declaratively said as part of Tradition? You can see why this is upsetting to see for the Church. I won’t let it shake my faith in the Church, but how could its Catechism, even a fallible one, OPPOSE Catholic teachings?

Think about it, when the CC removed the words “They do not choose their condition” it implies that we do choose our condition and since we choose being gay we are intrinsically evil. I am sure the CC has wordsmiths that can layer a few levels of complexity to smooth things over.
