In the past six months, I’ve lost 57 lbs, and lately I have been considering getting my belly button pierced as a reward. Would this be thought of as a sin? I’m not planning on going around dressed immodestly or anything; I’m very self conscious and careful about how I dress. This piercing would just be kind of life my little secret and a reward for having dropped so much weight.

Any opinions? Bad idea, or good idea?

I don’t see why it would be sinful. No, it’s not sinful.

Should you do it? It’s up to you. It sounds like you want to do it. So go for it!

Congrats on losing the weight.

it’s not sinful but it’s really, really, really stupid. just like tattoos.

Congratulations on the weight loss! That takes some hard work!

I can’t see why a belly button piercing would be sinful, but here are some things to consider:

Piercings are a form of ornamentation - they’re usually meant for others to see. I don’t see the point of going through a painful procedure and then buying jewelry that no one will see.

You might also consider what will happen if you get married and have children. Is that far enough in the future that you won’t feel you wasted the money now?

I only have pierced ears, but I did consider a belly button piercing in college and I had several friends who had them. The jewelry is quite pretty, but I couldn’t justify it knowing that I would be uncomfortable baring my midriff and knowing that in a few short years I would hopefully be having children.

Sinful? No.

Smart? I don’t think so.

“Don’t do anything to your body when you are 20 that you might regret when you are 40” Of course if you are already 40, think about when you are 60. Holes in your bellybutton? :hmmm:

At least a bellybutton ring is less permanent. To be honest I think they look tacky, but that’s just a taste thing I guess.

Congratulation on losing so much weight!

The OP asked for opinions and I am assuming this is yours. But I do NOT think tattos are stupid. I have them and I actually really like them. It was done years ago and is a part of me.

As for the person who mentioned regretting it in the future. Before I got my first tatto 20 years ago, everyone said the same thiing ‘You will regret this when you are older’. Well… guess what I have never regretted it. How can I ever regret doing something I have always wanted by my own free will. I was NOT peer pressured into it. If anything, I was being peer pressured not to go through with it

To the OP, I don’t think it is sinful. However, personally, I have heard it is painful and can get infected. On the other hand, all you need to do is then take it out. I am pretty sure any scarring would heal. Not sure of how expensive it would be to get it done only to take the ring out. It is up to you

And 57 pounds ! wow ! what is your secret?

I have yet to see a tattoo on a 60 year old that looks good. Sorry. Skin sags.

In your own personal judgment, do you think this piercing might tempt you to look at yourself more frequently and in a more self-admiring way then you otherwise would be disposed to do?

I believe the piercing is not a good idea (even if it is just for private admiration). I think if it’s wrong to look at other people’s bodies for the purpose of experiencing pleasure, then a similar rule should still apply to looking at our own bodies (even if that pleasure is of a lesser degree). Looking at ourselves is ok when there is a necessary reason for doing so, but we must remember that we are temples of the Holy Spirit and not objects…

God bless and congratulations on losing all that weight! It sounds like that’s a pretty big reward, already! 😃

I’m pretty sure it’s not.

People appreciate beauty. Spouses also have their own particular way of doing so.

As for the self-admiration, there’s got to be a line between a healthy body image and narcissism.

The first thing I think when I hear “bellybutton piercing” is “OMG EW GROSS!”

But…that’s my opinion and it is your body. The body, that by the way, you worked really hard to get in to shape, took control of, and turned in to a better and happier place for you. You have proven that you are in control of it. And if you want that piercing then go for it girl! It is your body now just as it was when you were working to lose all of that weight.

57lb!!! Wow! Congrats!

It is not a sin. Get it if you want it. It is so easy to take out. Really not a big deal. A friend of mine had it and took it out after a few years. The scar is tiny and one would really have to stare at her belly button to see it.

Wow, I had no idea so many people had such strong negative feelings about navel piercings. What’s so gross about it? Just kinda confused…
Anyway, OP, I had my belly button pierced 8 years ago when I went to college, and I’ve never regretted it, not for a single moment. I love my piercing, and it’s primarily for myself since my husband doesn’t really care one way or another, and I’m a modest dresser as well.
Since then, I’ve had three kids, and I’ve fluctuated in weight by over 50 pounds at some points. I’m back down to my original weight now, after baby number 3, and it still looks good.
I never even took it out during my pregnancies, except when I was going to the hospital to deliver.
Best of luck, and what an amazing accomplishment to lose 57lbs. Congrats! I know how hard it is, so you should be proud of yourself.

Nothing sinful about it what-so-ever. Just as long as you think it through and know that is what you really want, go for it. Plus I love my tattoos and piercings. Like my wedding band tattoo, my Chi Rho tattoos, my mustache tattoo on the inside of my finger, and I love my industrial bar. Plus this guy looks pretty happy with his tattoos and he is old.http://yoy50.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/old-man-tattoos.jpg

Well, the skin’s gonna sag even without the tattoo. Just sayin.
Yes, but when skin sags without a tattoo, is it just skin.

When it sags with one, Mom no longer says Mom, the eagle doesn’t look like a bird and the snake is a mass of color.

Ugh.

True, but when we get old are we really going to care? 😃 I hope not.

My daughter had her belly button pierced; it got infected and developed into a big, ugly painful mess. Good for you for loosing the weight, but I would spend that money instead at a high end department store and add something stunning to your wardrobe.
