BEN CARSON: You know, we’ve reached a point in our society where we dissect everything and try to ascribe some nefarious notion to it. We really need to move away from that. We need to move away from being offended by everything, of going through history and looking at everything, you know, of renaming everything – I mean, think about the fact that some of our universities, some of our prestigious universities, have a relationship with the slave trade. Should we go and rename those universities?

It really gets to a point of being ridiculous after a while. And, you know, we’re going to have to grow up as a society.
I totally agree.

Col. Allen West has also discussed this. One may look that up, I think he just said something like “that’s history”.

This always seemed a little dishonest to me. The same people who will complain about “cancel culture” in one area will also get mad about media they view as anti-Christian or as immoral in some other way.

I think it’s dumb that there’s a massive rush for companies to disassociate themselves from potentially offensive media, but not because I’m worried about “cancel culture” or people being snowflakes. I just hate corporations playing woke to appease stakeholders.

I am pretty sure is quite aware (but feel free to educate Dr. Carson…), and yet, he realizes if you dig enough, a nation can tear down every person or event ever. Should Catholics push to tear down MLK statues because he was a philanderer? If everyone plays that game, we will have nothing left.

The same can be said of politicians donning African scarfs and taking a knee…

I’m sure he is aware he is a black bloke.

I am also sure that he also knows that he is a human first and foremost and is just as human as white folk.

His race is a part of his identity but doesn’t make up the only part of his identity.

I remember when the grand wizard decided to removed his hood at a Klan meeting (still not realizing he himself was black). Watching the white klansmen’s heads explode was pretty funny.

People still get surprised when I tell them I’m a registered Republican.

I don’t fit the stereotype.

I’m not white and I’m not married.

Right on Ben!

…now if only we could apply this to CAF.

If everyone plays that game, we will have nothing left.
Well, yes, but presumably you do also believe that there are some historical figures and historical events that are bad and should not be celebrated. If the United States government started erecting statues of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin everywhere then I think most of the people currently decrying censorship would be on the street tearing them down.

I honestly don’t think he is aware he is a black bloke.
Does he have to be aware of that? Dr. Ben Carson is a human being, he is a child of God, he is a man of God. Dr. Carson is a husband, a father, a grandfather. He is a gifted physician, a leading Neurosurgeon who did groundbreaking work in pediatric neurosurgery, especially conjoined twins. He was a teacher, a friend, a co-worker. Dr. Ben Carson is the Secretary of a large federal agency.

Oh…Dr. Ben Carson happens to have darker skin.

Yup

Wandered far from the plantation or is it escaped? 🤔

Yes. Slavery and racism among them.
All figures, current and historical, are flawed, however. The calls for tearing down statues and monuments of Washington and Jefferson because they owned slaves ignores the very positive things they did. The statues and monuments are not there because they owned slaves.
If the United States government started erecting statues of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin everywhere then I think most of the people currently decrying censorship would be on the street tearing them down.
If they were owned by the government, then it would be wrong regardless. FDR was a bigot. He interned thousands of Americans without due process. But the monument in his honor should not be destroyed or defaced by individuals.

Now that’s a word I first heard when I was in the military.

My squadron had joint military exercises with both Canadian and British soldiers.

The British soldiers did like to use that word on each other.

One hears things about Martin Luther King Jr. But I would not be in favor of ridding ourselves of MLK day or statues of him. There is a perspective to appreciate these things with. In the end, no man, or perhaps no man but one who has ever lived is perfect and he was crucified.

Dr. Carson would be a great president or would have been a great president. Who knows what the future holds.

Didn’t Ben Carson try to murder his friend by stabbing him when he was a teenager over a radio station?
Oh no! 😲 If that is true we better forget anything good he ever did. Because if he got into an altercation as a teen, well…I don’t think there is anyway to to make up for it. Saving all those lives as a neurosurgeon, someone should go back to the families and let them know just what type of person they let operated on their child. Their child is probably scared for life having had Dr. Ben Carson operate on their brain. (sarcasm intended)

I have no idea if what you say is true or not. However I do know that every single one of us, including you, has done things we regret, things we wish we hadn’t done. You, as a Catholic, should know the concept of forgiveness & mercy. You, as a Catholic, should know we are not judged by one incident in our lives but by how we live our lives. God will never condemn us for one act if we ask for forgiveness and mercy. Maybe some should take a page out of that book.

I remember that sketch and how funny it was, apart from whatever point it was making (if any). It would probably be labeled as too politically incorrect today.

With regard to Ben Carson, I think he has a point; but perhaps the better lesson is to learn what we really should be offended by and what is too nonsensical to protest. That distinction will, of course, be different for each of us.

Political correctness run amok. That’s what’s been going on, here. We have become nitpicky about every little flaw in our history. No country is perfect. Yes, we should correct injustices, and we have to a large extent. But what good is it going to do to try to erase and demolish our history, so that future generations aren’t even aware of it and can’t get any sense of how our nation developed, or learn any of the lessons our history has to teach us? We have a rich history, though not all of it has been laudable. No nation on earth has a completely clean slate. It’s unreasonable to expect that.

I think this movement to destroy historical monuments and statues is just another way of trying to further dumb down America. And a dumb America is a vulnerable America.
