Yoiur posts about abstinece programs show an ignorance of what they teach.
I never said what they teach. I noted that many states have turned down federal money for them, because they cause the problems they were meant to solve.
You are usinf sound bites
I cited a study that showed it to be true. You have since admitted what it shows. After almost a decade of abstinence only, the kids in those programs show more sexual experimentation, more STDs, and more pregnancies.

It’s a failure, Mary. One that damages these kids badly, often permanently.
As to Darwin and whether he believd the human person had ‘soul’, that came from God,
Since he admitted we have them, and since he asserted that God created life, it would seem rather perverse to deny it.
G. K Chesteron had trouble with Darwin as well.
He had trouble with big numbers and science generally. But he was a pretty good poet; I like “Lepanto” in many ways.
Go to this page to see what he said about Darwin:
It did. It was someone else quote-mining Chesterton for statements about Darwin. Here’s two gems of complete misrepresentation from that site:

Darwinists, he wrote, see everything in “gray graduations of twilight”, because they believe it is the twilight of the gods."

And:

Christ had an immortal human soul. Darwinists insist that there is no such thing.

I don’t think so. Chesterton probably wasn’t very well acquainted with what Darwinists thought, but I doubt very much if he was a complete moron, as your site presents him to be.

Yes, and I cited an article that said the opposite. The thing is you are not admitting that safe sex programs have dominated the programs in the schools. If anything, the abstinence programs which started only 9 years ago and have been in selected school across the country have probably been part of the reason for
declines in teen pregnancies. Of course now PP is handing out RU486, and not just to young teen girls but they hand it out to men who want it for girls…some being predators…
And so many other factors like the media, examples like Brittany Spearsa…all leading to teens having a perception that it is normal and even good to become a “hotty” and get involved with sex early on. Even the fashions in the stores, like Abercombe and Fitch, encourage that sexual view of life. So blaming abstinence programs is ridiculous, especially when no one touches those other causes. Ther 'Comprehensive Sex programs" even have specific lessons on how to shop for contraceptives, how to go to a teen clinic. Here in my state they had kids touring the local PP clinic. Luckily some pro-life picketers were there that day and saw them being paraded in to see the clinic. It is THOSE programs that encourage early sexual activity.

And I bet my bottom dollar that seacoast town in MA where 17 girls 16 and under are now pregnant, has a ‘comprehensive sex’ program in their school…comprehensive sex ed, programs that pretends to teach abstinence but only give it minnimum time.
They even tell the kids that abstinence is not a 100% proof way to avoid pregnancy…why? They figure in the fact that some kids will try abstinence and then fail…wow, such encouragement to being chaste! No wonder kids do fail, and yes they get hurt as you say. That is why it is so urgent that parents really investigate these programs. If you haven’t listened to an abstinence program then I CHALLENGE you to do so…a REAL abstinence program. Contact your diocese and inquire, Go to your school and find out what materials they use. I did. They had a hand out on the table that said ‘withdrawal’ ( as in the young man withdrawing before ejaculation) was 75% effective! Great stuff in those comprehensive sex programs. But the schools have it down pat how to deal with parents like me who would object. When I and other parents present objected to that handout, they immadiately said, “Oh, we don’t use that one anymore…”, but my son remembered it. And they put our 10 times what they really use in the classroom and then say every instructor picks and chooses from what is there, so you can’t really say what they are using in the classroom. It is amazing what they do to cover what they teach… Good luck to any parent out there who ties to find out. And our school had a 'Comprehensive Sex" program. They threw out the abstinence program and replaced it with a spuedo
abstinence program that included PP and abortion.

When you go to your school and try to find out what they teach and try to get into your classroom, let me know. Of course you probably have your kids in private schools so it may be a different story.

Mary:

First Chesterton was in a famous debate against an evolutionists and won the debate hands down, so he knew something about this. ( Darley Vs Chesterton at Mecca debate)

Chesterton was extremely insightful. I doubt he had a “passing” understanding of Darwin. I think he saw through what Darwin was saying. Darwin was a clever agnostic. He included some phrases here and there indicating some kind of religion…maybe in his first book “Origins…” he still had some belief in God, but by the time he wrote “Descent of Man” he was slugging hard to get God out of the picture. His statement that he could 'shew" that man was just a product of natural processes, including his moral and psychological being, “shews” that…

I’m not quite sure if Stein was being sarcastic and using examples to prove how science can be evil in an attempt to prove that anything can be evil if used incorrectly.

If not, what a sad case.

Science is a gift, it is upto us to use it for the good of others. How can you claim science is evil when it has done a lot of good? Science is not a person remember, it also widely varies from biology to chemistry to physics. Science is also from God, and through this science we are living, and through the sciences stein exerted pressure on to the air around him and rarefacted the air so that the sound waves travelled and delivered information to the other.

Several popes have already discussed in length about science and religion. Not difficult to find.

Harmony, you shoul;d read through all of the posts to see where this discussion came from.

First: recognize that Ben Stein was talking to ID scientists and scientists who questioned Darwinian style evolution. So he is not against science persy, but he is saying that what and how science presents has consequences for social and cultural policies. Social Darwinism is recognized as being an influence on the Eugenics movement in europe and the US and finally in the ectreme form it took in Nazi Germany.

Whether or not that was based on ‘good science’ is an important question. Yes, the Church supports “good science” and "honest, science will in the end support Catholic teaching. Much of this discussion has been about whether Darwin is compatible with Catholic thought. I don’t know if you saw the quote from benedict saying that Darwin ethics, in the end, is mainly “tooth and claw”…and that both Popes have recognized that there are different forms of the Theory of Evolutiuon, some being compatible with Catholic thought and others are not…My stance is that Darwin, because he said man was just an animal, differing not in kind at all, is not compatible with Catholic thought. Darwin is a materialist. Barbarian is saying the opposite.

Neither of us is condemning science alltogether, and neither wa Ben Stein. So you are misunderstanding the discussion.

The idea of “eugenics” was used to kill some families by sterilizing members of those families in our country and later in nazi germany for the extreme genocide of jewish people and mixed blood germans and political enemies…

But have we freed ourselves from those blood thirsty ideas and do we as Americans really cherish every life?

This video on U-Tube put out by Population Research Institute shows the alarming fact that sex selective abortions are killing thousands of baby girls.

Feminists are fighting legeslation to prohibit sex selective abortions in our country. Why? We still have a long way to go to put an end to Social Darwinism in these forms:

The video goes on to detail how this problem has come to America—and how feminist groups will do nothing about it, even though it is the ultimate form of sex discrimination.

“Our hope is that this video will serve as a wake-up call to feminist groups,” says Colin Mason, PRI’s Director of Media Production. “We lay the blame at their doorstep because they are the ones who should be the most concerned about this issue, but they are not. Their apathy is shameful and we invite them to join us in this cause.”

This video will soon be available in Spanish, and is available by following this link. It can also be found by typing the words “Population Research Institute” into the YouTube search engine, or by visiting PRI’s YouTube page, [www.youtube.com/col(name removed by moderator)ri1](www.youtube.com/col(name removed by moderator)ri1).

Too bad they didn’t listen to Darwin and his followers. Darwin asserted that to even let the weakest of us die was an overwhelming evil, and his followers debunked classical eugenics. Unfortunately, your people often had the upper hand and the ideas of Darwin and his followers were set aside for the Final Solution.
But have we freed ourselves from those blood thirsty ideas and do we as Americans really cherish every life?
Unfortunately not. Many still don’t agree with Darwin.

You for example. Your hostility to Darwin is helping the culture of death, Mary.

First: recognize that Ben Stein was talking to ID scientists and scientists who questioned Darwinian style evolution.
Yes. Stein gave a lot of time to the religion of ID. Also to atheists who were scientists. But he censored any mention of legitimate scientists who were also believers in the Christian God.

For obvious reasons.
So he is not against science persy,
He claims that science is about killing people. He even claimed (falsely) that scientists were ordering people into the Nazi gas chambers.

*Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers *, talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you.

Crouch: That’s right.
Stein: …Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

Crouch: Good word, good word.*

This blood libel so upset the Jewish people that the Anti-Defamation League denounced his behavior:

**The film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed misappropriates the Holocaust and its imagery as a part of its political effort to discredit the scientific community which rejects so-called intelligent design theory.

Hitler did not need Darwin to devise his heinous plan to exterminate the Jewish people and Darwin and evolutionary theory cannot explain Hitler’s genocidal madness.

Using the Holocaust in order to tarnish those who promote the theory of evolution is outrageous and trivializes the complex factors that led to the mass extermination of European Jewry.**

but he is saying that what and how science presents has consequences for social and cultural policies. Social Darwinism is recognized as being an influence on the Eugenics movement in europe and the US and finally in the ectreme form it took in Nazi Germany.
Mary is in denial about the sources of the Nazi program. About 90% of Hitler’s final solution was taken from Martin Luther’s The Jews and Their Lies.
jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/anti-semitism/Luther_on_Jews.html

Hitler and his henchmen lavishly praised Luther for this, and gave him full credit for his advice. Compare to Hitler’s Wannsee Protocol:
remember.org/wannsee.html
My stance is that Darwin, because he said man was just an animal, differing not in kind at all, is not compatible with Catholic thought.
Mary is very unhappy that Darwin did not say that man was just an animal. Darwin recognized a spiritual aspect to man that made him different, and also recognized that man differed from other animals by having rights to life and liberty.

She’s in denial about those things, because she really, really wants Darwin to think of man as merely an animal.
Darwin is a materialist.
How does a materialist think spiritual powers exist? How does he give credit to God for creating life?

**There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved. **

Barbarian is saying the opposite.
So did Darwin. And he gets to decide.
Neither of us is condemning science alltogether, and neither wa Ben Stein.
If you think “science leads you to killing people” isn’t a condemnation. Maybe not to Stein; he admires his former boss, Richard Nixon, who wasn’t exactly a moral paragon.
So you are misunderstanding the discussion.
Mary, I think everyone gets it.*

Yes. Stein gave a lot of time to the religion of ID. Also to atheists who were scientists. But he censored any mention of legitimate scientists who were also believers in the Christian God.

No where do I recall anyone but you claiming ID was a religion. ID tries to get away from the pure fundamentalist view of a 7 day creation and tries to point out the patterns and structures, numerical codes, relationships which seems to be a part of life and the universe… it asks questions, as lomng as it is only doing that it is not a religion. That is YOUR interpretation of the ID message.

Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul II are saying that in the end Theologians have the final say on whether a theory is compatible with Catholic Church teaching. But they specifically say that scienc cannot explain the human person from a purely materialist viewpoint which Darwin tried to do.

"Taking into account the state of scientific research at the time as well as of the requirements of theology, the encyclical Humani Generis considered the doctrine of “evolutionism” a serious hypothesis, worthy of investigation and in-depth study equal to that of the opposing hypothesis. Pius XII added two methodological conditions: **that this opinion should not be adopted as though it were a certain, proven doctrine **]and as though one could totally prescind from revelation with regard to the questions it raises."newadvent.org/library/docs_jp02tc.htm
ID scientists are asking questions, why not allow those questions. barbarian is acting in total disregard for this statement that Darwin’s Theory should not be treated as a certain, proven doctrine. When you do that then Darwin becomes part of your religion.

Barbaian:
He (Ben Stein) claims that science is about killing people. He even claimed (falsely) that scientists were ordering people into the Nazi gas chambers.*Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers *, talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … "

Barbarian, even you admitted the Nazi’s were doing scientific experiments. I posted the site for the scientific Institute in germany associated with the Nazi regime and thos scientists admitted it was a sad part of their history. The scientists in this country admit that eugenics came out of Social Darwinian ethics…in fact this is so widely acknowledged across the board on the internet, and I have posted numerous sites and articles on it, that what you are saying is a total fantasy. Do you even know what facility Ben Stein’s relatives were at? If they went to the facility with Josep Mengels was a doctor, eugenicist, widely respected before and even after the war, and he was never tried at Neuremberg.

"The center piece of Hitlers speeches was call for racial purity, which was an idea the became the driving force of Dr. Mengele from a gentle young scientist into a sadistic killer that sent millions of Jews to their deaths and performed grotesque experiments on children (Lagnado and Dekel 44 - 46). actually became interested in Hitlers speeches and ideas.

The final and most gruesome of all experiments were the operations. Thy would squeeze hundreds of children in these tiny living quarters. He applied to be an assistant at Vershuerss Institute at the University of Frankfurt, and he was accepted. The gypsies were also allowed t keep their hair, and for entertainment they would put on what looked like an ongoing carnival where they would sing, dance, and tell stories, especially for Dr. Mengele would inject deadly amounts of typhus and tuberculosis into the body of a twin to see how long it would take to kill the child off, and then turn around and purposely kill their twin to record the different effects the germs carried in each twin (Shirer 1274). Mengele took the next step in his academic career. Mengeles favorites considering that they lived like princes and princesses compared to many others at Auschwitz. Mengele where he would ask them for more information that would later be connected to the experiments he would perform on them (Lagnado and Dekel 57 - 60). The Gypsy barracks were exceedingly similar to the twins barracks, in size and design, although there were many more people to a bed which made the barracks incredibly crowded…"

If Ben’s relatives were at Aushwitz then Ben was telling the absolute truth.**

Crouch: That’s right.
Stein: …Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

I just watch the movie last week: Sophie Scholl: The Final Days It had a wonderfdul scene with Sophie, a young nursing student during WWII in Germany arguing against the Nazi governent official. Yolu could see the opposing ideas. Sophie believed in liberty and compassion, the Nazi did not. We can agree that compassion for all is what we want to be the basis for law… You could also see the Nazi official justifyinf nazi policies on a warped idea of compassion…as if he were hellping society, and even helping those who were killed because they were mentally or physically unsound. Those ideas are stilll alive in our country today. I encourage you and Barbarian to look into how many abortions occur because parents are talked into the idea their child will be too disabled…or mentally retarded… Same policies, different countries, different circumstances, same results: death.
And scientists are still involved encouraging those life and death decisions.

"[Each year in America fewer and fewer disabled infants are born. The reason is eugenic abortion. Doctors and their patients use prenatal technology to screen unborn children for disabilities, then they use that information to abort a high percentage of them. Without much scrutiny or debate, a eugenics designed to weed out the disabled has become commonplace.

Not wishing to publicize a practice most doctors prefer to keep secret, the medical community releases only sketchy information on the frequency of eugenic abortion against the disabled. But to the extent that the numbers are known, they indicate that the vast majority of unborn children prenatally diagnosed as disabled are killed."

Barbaian, and the Jewish Defamation league is obviously in denial of historical record: The Nazi hated the Jews, it is true, but they hated other people who would damage their idea of a pure Aryan State as well…

"
Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda, noted:

“The Fuhrer is deeply religous,** though completely anti-Christian****. He views Christianity as a symptom of decay. Rightly so. It is a branch of the Jewish race… Both [Judaism and Christianity] have no point of contact to the animal element, and thus, in the end, they will be destroyed.”
constitutionalistnc.tripod.com/hitler-leftist/id2.html

Christianity was an extension of the jewish religion…equally abhorent to the Nazi’s idea of racial purity and basically secular idea that a state of pure blood germsn would bring about a higher civilazation based on ideas that mixing bloods slowed the evolution of mankind…Neo-Darwinian ethics…

Mary is very unhappy that Darwin did not say that man was just an animal. …She’s in denial about those things, because she really, really wants Darwin to think of man as merely an animal.

Darwin did just say man was an animal.
He saw man different only in “degree” but not in kind from animals and thought any animal could develop a moral conscience
just as man possessed given time and evolved intelligence.
"Darwin focuses less on the question of whether humans evolved than he does on displaying that each of the human faculties considered to be so far beyond those of animals—such as moral reasoning, sympathy for others, beauty, and music—can be seen in kind (if not degree) in other animal species (usually apes and dogs)."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Descent_of_Man,_and_Selection_in_Relation_to_Sex

The direct quotes from Descent of Man posted here show Darwin speicifically said man was no different from animals and Darwin stated he was not like other Naturalists who would put man in a different classification.

Barbarian is reinventing what Darwin said, and I have no idea what his motives for doing that are.

barbarian insists that Darwin is not a materialst because he mentions the word “Creator” in Origins of Species…

Charles Darwin, the last sentence of The Origin of Species 1879

…here is the same paragraph from a different edition or translation that a fellow atheist put online:
blogs.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/07/darwins_faith.html
It is clear he became an Atheist - and nothing has surpassed his poetic and inspiring summary of his position than the last paragraph of the ‘Origin of the Species’:

“It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us. These laws, taken in the largest sense, being Growth with Reproduction; inheritance which is almost implied by reproduction; Variability from the indirect and direct action of the external conditions of life, and from use and disuse; a Ratio of Increase so high as to lead to a Struggle for Life, and as a consequence to Natural Selection, entailing Divergence of Character and the Extinction of less-improved forms. Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”

Clear - pure and simple - and a poetic ‘nail in the coffin’ for the view that only a religious view of the world can inspire beauty…

blogs.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/07/darwins_faith.html

(see second post down)

Where did he get that translation Barbaian? Is that the one the Social Darwinists worked with? That came from a scientific blog. How would you respnd to that scientist?

The fact that Darwin specifically set out to show that everything about the human person came about through material process, without Divine Intervention is what castes the strongest disclaimer on Darwin being compatible with Catholic teaching. The Descent Man was written with that specific purpose in mind.

If you think “science leads you to killing people” isn’t a condemnation. Maybe not to Stein; he admires his former boss, Richard Nixon, who wasn’t exactly a moral paragon.

And what about that letter to Bill Clinton to hasten the release of RU 486 to allow for poor people to be killed at a quicker pace? Every politician has a weak point and a scandal we can look into. using the fact that Ben Stein worked for Nixon is such a red herring argument…and the comparison with other scandals even makes Nixon’s scandal seem minor these days.

Science forms social policy…that is how it leads to killing. I know our school mentions in its policies it must teach from a scientific view, and thus science is the basis for values in our society today…even more for many people than religion.

In this country science is still leading to killing . Stop ignoring that fact and join the fight against it.I posted a video on the fact that abortions occur for sex selection. That is a social Darwinian approach…And other forms of social policy being debated including euthansia, aborting disabled children, all those come from a scientific view that it is compassionate to end those lives.
But eugneics can lead us in other directions, equally wrong: gene choice and replacement for more than just therapeutic reasons.

"The treatment of highly deleterious genetic disorders does not create public anxiety about gene therapy. Cosmetic gene therapy, however, conjures up images of a new eugenics because it not only allows healthy individuals to change their physical appearance and/or behaviors through gene manipulation, but allows these changes to be passed down to future generations. Molecular biologists have already isolated the genes that code for many physical traits, such as skin color, baldness, and stature. In addition, some scientists claim to have found genes that code for complex behaviors, such as shyness and homosexuality. Although many of these arguments have been shown to be fallacious, popular press coverage has contributed to the growing public belief that behaviors are genetically determined.6 Even granting the dubious character of some of these more sweeping claims, it is almost certainly the case that within the next few decades our increasing knowledge of human genetics, combined with germ-line therapy, will enable us to produce custom-designed genetic individuals.

Bioethicists fear that attributes not desired by society as a whole, such as the aforementioned physical and behavioral traits, will be removed from humanity completely. Jeremy Rifkin has pointed out that the potential for a new eugenics is inherent in our ability to manipulate our genetic makeup, even if the technology has beneficial uses:

If diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, and cancer are to be prevented by altering the genetic makeup of individuals, why not proceed to other less serious “disorders”: myopia, color blindness, dyslexia, obesity, left-handedness? Indeed, what is to preclude a society from deciding that a certain skin color is a disorder? In the end, why would we ever say no to any alteration of the genetic code that might enhance the well-being of our offspring? It is difficult to imagine parents rejecting genetic modifications that promised to improve, in some way, the opportunities for their progeny. (140)

Rifkin, among others, is concerned that the new eugenics will lead to homogenous societies, to a loss of diversity. Worse, he argues, we may create a society that discriminates against those who cannot access technologies controlled by a limited number of scientists…"
depauw.edu/SFs/essays/gattaca.htm

That is what Ben Stein and others, including many in the Catholic Church are concerned about. Every life is precious. Science, unleashed from authentic religion, can lead into dangerous grounds, all justified in a false way under the word “compassion”.

One final response on whether science can lead to killing.

This came from an e-mail I received about the 40th Anniversary of
Humanae Vitae. George Bush is pushing for a Federal Proposal that recognizes birth control as causing abortions. At last! Some truth, and someone willing to put the truth about birth control into a piece of writing that would be effectual!

Birthcontrol was recognized by Margaret Sanger as the one invention that would revolutionize society and change family structure the most, and it has…

But here are some remarks by Father Paul marx on the subject:

"Humanae Vitae: In Retrospect

by Fr. Paul Marx

We can understand [Pope Paul VI’s language in Humanae Vitae] today better in the light of the increasing number of developed countries having more coffins than cradles each year, with some 70 nations constituting 40 percent of mankind dying because of low birthrates, with falling birthrates worldwide – thanks to contraception/abortifacients/sterilization/abortion, with euthanasia to follow.

Having traveled and worked in some 70 countries, I found no country where contraception has not led to abortion, to increasing fornication among the young, to divorce, and to all those other evils we see today that make up the international sex mess.

It is indeed great to be a Catholic these days if you know what is happening in the world and then how right and prophetic are the teachings of the Catholic Church on sexual morality as expressed especially in Pope Pius XI’s Casti Connubii, Pope Paul VI’s Humanae Vitae, Pope John Paul II’s Familiaris Consortio, and other documents.

As a British humorist and convert to the Catholic Church (mostly because of Humanae Vitae) observed, once you say that you may morally siphon off procreation from the marital/sexual act, then you are back to the old paganism when contraception, abortifacients and abortion for failed contraception were rife, all leading to the dying of nations once abortion entered society."

Taken from, The Agony of Paul VI, originally sent to Father Robert J. Fox in 2001.

One final response on whether science can lead to killing.
You mean regarding Stein’s blood libel against science:

**Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers [biologist P.Z. Myers], talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you.

Crouch: That’s right.

Stein: …Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

Crouch: Good word, good word.**

In other words, there was no killing before science, at least not by people who believed in God.

Do you think that Torquemada, Luther, Calvin, Cromwell, and Cotton Mather believed in God? Do you think they were scientists?

Denying the facts of history are helping to perpetuate the culture of death, Mary. And that is what you are doing.

barbarian insists that Darwin is not a materialst because he (attributes the origin of life to God) in Origins of Species…
I corrected your distortion of my statement for you. (the correct words are in parentheses)
How does a materialist think spiritual powers exist? How does he give credit to God for creating life?
And yet Darwin wrote that he did. So we have two choices:
  1. It’s possible to be a materialist and believe in spiritual things and to think God created life.
  2. Darwin was not a materialist.
There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.

Yes. It wasn’t in the first edition. He added this profession of faith in a later edition.
Where did he get that translation Barbaian?
He got it from an earlier edition. Later, Darwin, for whatever reason, thought it would be more accurate to put in a reference to God creating life. That was in the 1878 edition. The one your source is citing was the first edition, printed in 1859.
Is that the one the Social Darwinists worked with? That came from a scientific blog. How would you respnd to that scientist?
I’d have to point out that Darwin was a theist when he wrote the book, and even in later editions, edited that passage to make it clear that he was.
The fact that Darwin specifically set out to show that everything about the human person came about through material process,…
Except, as your quote showed, mans spiritual powers. That, and Darwin’s assertion that man was unique in having rights to life and liberty are what shows he thought man was different than other animals.
The Descent Man was written with that specific purpose in mind.
Exactly. He only alluded to the possibility of human evolution in The Origin of Species. His choice to write a separate work on man points out his idea that man was unique.

(argument that Stein is not condemning science)

Barbarian chuckles:
If you think “science leads you to killing people” isn’t a condemnation. Maybe not to Stein; he admires his former boss, Richard Nixon, who wasn’t exactly a moral paragon.
And what about that letter to Bill Clinton to hasten the release of RU 486 to allow for poor people to be killed at a quicker pace?
Stein didn’t write that letter, far as I know. Neither did Nixon.
Science forms social policy…
Nope. The world would be much, much different if scientists were running things.
that is how it leads to killing.-
Politicians are not scientists. And they run things.
I know our school mentions in its policies it must teach from a scientific view,
Science, I would think. I don’t think it would be so good for English.
and thus science is the basis for values in our society
The premise doesn’t lead to the conclusion, Mary.
In this country science is still leading to killing .
I know you want us to believe it, but you’ve been completely unable to provide any evidence for it. In fact, science has greatly prevented death and prolonged life.
And other forms of social policy being debated including euthansia, aborting disabled children, all those come from a scientific view that it is compassionate to end those lives.
Then, as you know, that is anti-Darwinian, since Darwin condemned such thinking.

Mary goes to an atheist for values:
Rifkin, among others, is concerned that the new eugenics will lead to homogenous societies, to a loss of diversity. Worse, he argues, we may create a society that discriminates against those who cannot access technologies controlled by a limited number of scientists…"
depauw.edu/SFs/essays/gattaca.htm
That’s kind of alarming, Mary. BTW, that is not science, but engineering you are talking about.
Every life is precious.
And yet you and Stein are making excuses for people who advocated killing of “inferior people.” Make up your mind.

But you haven’t proven it was a libel…science that seeks to say everything is explainable by material process disallowing for God closes the door on any concept of universal morality and law…opens the door on relative values…that does lead to death. it is the same fruit as the one in the garden.

You are disallowing the evidence of history that the Nazis were influenced by the enlightenment philosophers. In fact the Nazis came from numerous belief systems religiously, certainly there was not direct connect for hitler with Luther, other than use of his writings for propaganda. You have never brought forth clear evidence that Darwin attributed anything to Divine intervention…or that Darwin, in the end, believed in the Trinitarian God. What God he may have believed in…he was pretty unclear in his few mentions of the word 'Creator;,and certainly never mention Christ./

But you haven’t proven it was a libel…
Stein and other unsavory people we don’t have to mention, have said that one must prove one’s innocence, rather than assume innocence until proven guilty. It’s sort of diagnostic for people like that. His accusation is a libel until he proves it is true.

However, it’s easy enough to point out that this kind of thing went on long before science. Indeed, if we asked “were more people killed and tortured in the name of science or in the name of religion?” it would quickly settle that particular libel.
science that seeks to say everything is explainable by material process disallowing for God
Science can’t do that. Methodological naturalism is unable to say anything at all about the supernatural. It can neither affirm nor deny it.
You are disallowing the evidence of history that the Nazis were influenced by the enlightenment philosophers.
The Nazis themselves admitted that they were influenced by Martin Luther. They gave him full credit for his advice on what to do with Jews.
In fact the Nazis came from numerous belief systems religiously, certainly there was not direct connect for hitler with Luther, other than use of his writings for propaganda.
As you learned, about 90% of the Final Solution came directly from Luther’s advice in “The Jews and Their Lies.”
You have never brought forth clear evidence that Darwin attributed anything to Divine intervention…
He attributed the creation of living things to God. Did you forget already?

According to Darwin, the officers on the Beagle kidded him about being such an orthodox Anglican. That would mean Trinitarian, of course. But suppose he didn’t. Are you arguing that Jews don’t believe in God because they aren’t Trinitarians?

Barbarian, we have had other posts about how Darwin slipped into agnosticism. he had many friends who also lost their faith including Thomas Huxley:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Henry_Huxley

"Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS (May 4, 1825 – June 29, 1895) was an English biologist, known as “Darwin’s Bulldog” for his advocacy of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.[1]

Huxley’s famous 1860 debate with the Lord Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen, against whom Huxley also debated on whether man was closely related to apes. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin’s ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition.

Huxley used the term ‘agnostic’ to describe his own views on religion, a term whose use has continued to the present day, and which throws light on his demanding criteria for proof in science (see Thomas Henry Huxley and agnosticism)."

And I found this biographical piece of information that says his link to the Anglican Church was through his wife. His own family was Unitarian Universalist.:

"Darwin’s wife, Emma, was a devout Christian. But under the pressure of his research, all the pillars of Darwin’s faith toppled one by one: belief in miracles, divine revelation, biblical authority, and, finally, the necessity of a deity. As self-description, he adopted Huxley’s term of “agnostic”; whether God existed he considered “beyond the scope of man’s intellect.” Still, he was well aware that his rationalist universe worked according to its own laws. It had no need for a Divine Watchmaker who designed and regulated all of creation.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unitarianism, Darwin’s grandfather Erasmus Darwin liked to say, was “a feather-bed to catch a falling Christian.” (Darwin’s mother, Susanna Wedgwood, had been a Unitarian, and he was tutored for a year by her minister; but the adult Darwin was always nominally affiliated with the Church of England, in deference to his wife.) Aptly and wittily put for his time, the definition is too narrow for today’s Unitarian Universalists, who espouse many varieties of humanism and theism."

uuworld.org/ideas/articles/2342.shtml

This article further relates that Charles Darwin called himself a materialist in his journal, called the “M” journal because of this admission:

"However, Darwin was being deceitful as he stated in his private notebooks that he was a materialist, which is a type of atheist.[6] [7][8] Darwin wrote the following: “The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble to us; and I for one must be content to remain an Agnostic.”[9] In the 1996 British Journal for the Philosophy of Science Kim Sterelny wrote in a book review the following: “I have no doubt that Darwin was a materialist and a mechanist…”[10] Furthermore, Charles Darwin’s casual mentioning of a ‘creator’ in earlier editions of The Origin of Species appears to have been a merely a ploy to downplay the implications of his materialistic theory.[11] Creation Ministries International states the following regarding why it is maintained that Charles Darwin was privately a materialist:

“ Ernst Mayr’s recent book on Darwin, One Long Argument: Charles Darwin and the Genesis of Evolutionary Thought, Harvard, 1991, also acknowledges that Darwin’s references to purpose were to appease both the public and his wife. His early, private notebooks show his materialism well established. For instance, in one of them he addresses himself as, ‘O, you materialist!’ and says, ‘Why is thought, being a secretion of brain, more wonderful than gravity as a property of matter?’ He clearly already believed that the idea of a separate realm of the spirit was nonsense, as is further shown when he warns himself not to reveal his beliefs, as follows: ‘to avoid saying how far I believe in materialism, say only that emotions, instincts, degrees of talent which are hereditary are so because brain of child resembles parent stock.’[12]

Scholars refer to the private notebook in which Charles Darwin stated he was a materialist as the “M” notebook of 1838.[13] Ernst Mayr wrote that “It is apparent that Darwin lost his faith in the years 1836-39, much of it clearly prior to the reading of Malthus. In order not to hurt the feelings of his friends and of his wife, Darwin often used deistic language in his publications, but much in his Notebooks indicates that by this time he had become a ‘materialist’ (more or less = atheist)”. [14]

According to Charles Darwin the “manifestly false history of the world” [15] as recorded in the Old Testament and New Testament miracles led him to reject Biblical veracity [16]. Eminent Darwin biographer, Professor Janet Browne, sums up Darwin’s views concerning religion: Darwin “mapped out a comparative evolution of the religious sense, proposing that religious belief was ultimately nothing more than a primitive urge to bestow a cause on otherwise inexplicable natural events…In short, he made no secret of his view that he did not believe religion to have any rational foundation at all” [17]."

conservapedia.com/Charles_Darwin

That was an interesting piece of information which once again shows that Darwin lost his faith and that Descent of Man was written to show that there was no need for a “God”.
If Darwin alluded to a ‘soul’ it was merely to say he could not talk about it as a scientist, or to placcade his wife and religious people of his time, as the article indicated.

It seems very contrary to honesty to argue that Darwin was a materialist but only later decided to hide it by admitting the existence of God and a human soul.

I note that two sources, Mayr (an atheist) and an anti-Catholic creationist site, both have reasons to make it appear that Darwin didn’t really mean what he wrote.

Darwin, late in life, certainly admitted that he was “leaning toward agnosticism.” However, he also admits as a younger man to being rather orthodox in his Anglican beliefs, at a time when he was gathering his evidence and writing his book.

The argument that “Darwin acknowledged God, but was lying about it to fool people” is completely at odds with everything else we know of his character.

It is the refuge of those who seeing that the evidence does not support them, resort to pure fabrication.

From the “M” Notebook:

"Now it is not a little remarkable that the fixed laws of nature should be /universally/ thought to be the will of a superior being, whose natures can only be rudely traced out. When one sees | this, one suspects that our will may /arise from/ as fixed laws of organization.—M. le Comte argues against all contrivance—it is what my views tend to.—…

What an animal like taste of, likes smell of, ∴ Hyaena likes smell of that fatty substance it scrapes off its bottom. it is relic of same thing that makes one dog smell posterior at another.—

Why do bulls & horses, animals of different orders turn up their nostrils when excited by love? Stallion licking udders of mare strictly analogous to men’s affect for women’s breasts. Dr. Darwin’s49 theory probably wrong, otherwise horses would have idea of beautiful forms.— |

With respect to free will, seeing a puppy playing cannot doubt that they have free will, if so all animals, then an oyster has & a polype (& a plant in some senses, perhaps, though from not having pain or pleasure, actions unavoidable & only to be changed by habits). Now free will of oyster, one can fancy to be direct effect of organization, by the capacities its senses give it of pain or pleasure. If so free will is to mind, what chance is to matter /M. Le Compte/—the free will (if so called) makes change | in bodily organization of oyster, so may free will make change in man.—the real argument fixes on hereditary disposition & instincts.—Put it so.—Probably some error in argument, should be grateful if it were pointed out. My wish to improve my temper, what does it arise from, but organization, …"[page] 279 The Notebooks on Man, Mind and Materialism

fected by circumstances & education & by the choice which at that time organization gave me to will—Verily the faults of the fathers, corporeal & bodily, are visited upon the children.— |

The above views would make a man a predestinarian of a new kind, because he would tend to be an atheist. Man thus believing, would more earnestly pray “deliver us from temptation,” he would be most humble, he would strive /to improve his organization/ for his children’s sake & for the effect of his example on others. It may be doubted whether a man intentionally can wag his finger from real caprice. it is chance which way it will be, but yet it is settled by reason.— |

Darwin seems to be saying that dropping the concept of a Divine Order would actually benefit man by making him humble. This argument in his notebook does not come from a man who believes in God and it would tend toward a motive to put forth biews that would eliminate the idea of a God who is ever present and active in relationship to His Creation, and to Whom human being are dependant upon.

I apologize because I put the wrong address or link down for the “M” notebooks in the last post.

I found the quote from the “M” Notebooks and other notebooks by Darwin at this address:

darwin-online.org.uk/content/frameset?itemID=F1582&viewtype=text&pageseq=1

I have to say it is hard following his entire flow of thought as it is jotted in notes. here was another quote:

“Men having some instincts as revenge /and anger/, which experience shows it must for his happiness to check—that is external circumstances are so conditioned as they are effecting a change in his instincts—like what is happening with other animals—is far from odd | nor is it odd he should have had them.—with lesser intellect they might be necessary & no doubt were preservative, & are now, like all other structures slowly vanishing—the mind of man is no more perfect than instincts of animals to all & changing contingencies, or bodies of either.—Our descent, then, is the origin of our evil passions!!—The Devil under form of Baboon is our grandfather!— |”
"

(page 287)

I think you can see that he struggles back and forth with idea of spiritual and material. But he tends toward explaining everything from ‘laws’. I guess that is the scientist in him.

I found this other piece which sought to show how Darwin’s experiences abroad seemed to convince him that man was just an animal, and seemed to be based on his negative experiences
viewing cruelty and savagery toward native women for example.

"Darwin recognized from the beginning of his theorizing about the transmutation of species that he would have to include human beings within the ambit of his considerations.
Should he allow man to escape the net of his hypothesis, our species would drag the Creator back into the picture—something that Darwin had no intention of permitting. This is not to say that he initially denied the work of a Creator God. He recognized the need for a divine shove to get the world spinning; but
during his travels in South America he was conscious of the absence of a benevolent personal power, when, for instance, he watched young Indian women being slaughtered by ignorant Spanish soldiers because “they breed so.” This kind of experience
caused him to ask himself: “Who would believe in this age in a Christian civilized country that such atrocities were committed?”1 Not that Darwin had a particularly high estimate of the intellectual or moral worth of the natives. As he viewed the naked, paint-smeared Fuegians, whose language seemed little better
than the guttural cries of a beast, he reflected that “one can hardly make oneself believe that they are fellow creatures placed in the same world.”2 From his experience of the extremes of human behavior during his Beagle voyage (1831–36), Darwin
came to perceive a gradation among human beings, from the Fuegians who seemed so like the animals, through the hardly more civilized gauchos, to his own messmates
aboard the Beagle.

Yet while on the voyage, he had not yet come to the view that there might be a transition from animals to man.
Darwin’s Metaphysics of Mind 167
Hösle2-08 4/6/05 12:36 PM Page 167
During the few months after he returned from his journey, Darwin did become convinced that species were not stable; and with this conviction, he quickly began to explore questions of instinct, mind, and, as he termed it, the “whole metaphysics.”3 He moved fairly rapidly from considerations of anatomical similarities among animals to cognitive comparisons between animals and man;
and so he came to rest the divinity of man on the shoulders of monkeys: “He is Mammalian—his . . . origin has not been indefinite—he is not a deity, his end <>will come, (or how dreadfully we are deceived) then he
is no exception.—he possesses some of the same general instincts, & moral feelings as animals.—they on other hand can reason—but Man has reasoning powers in excess. Instead of definite instincts—this is a replacement in mental
machinery—so analogous to what we see in bodily, that . . . it does not stagger me.”4 In coupling human mind in train with animal mind, Darwin followed out one deeply embedded track of the philosophical legacy of British empiricism, namely
the contention that rational activity consisted in the manipulation and association of faint sensory images, something of which even animals were capable. His grandfather, in Zoonomia, endorsed this sensationalist view of reason, and Darwin followed
in his progenitor’s footsteps. Also like Erasmus Darwin, Charles became a reader of David Hume.5"

Obviously, you’ve retreated a long way from Stein’s original blood libel against scientists.

And now, that you’ve seen that Stein not only lied, but blamed the very people who opposed the thinking of the Nazis, (for which the Anti-defamation League strongly condemned his lies) and that you’ve seen that Darwin himself objected to classical eugenics, there’s not much left for you but to argue whether or not Darwin thought oysters had any consciousness.

I think it’s philosophical question, myself, and I’m more interested in airing out the “science leads you to kill people” dishonesty.

Whoah there, just because I said Darwin struggled with whether there was God and whether there was a spiritual side to the human person that could not be explained by natural process does not mean I gave in and retreated…not at all. it just means I am more honest than you because when you encounter historical evidence that the nazis were anti-Christian, you won’t even admit it at all.

Look at what the Darwinian thought process was:

“but Man has reasoning powers in excess. Instead of definite instincts—this is a replacement in mental machinery—so analogous to what we see in bodily, that . . . it does not stagger me.”4 In coupling human mind in train with animal mind, Darwin followed out one deeply embedded track of the philosophical legacy of British empiricism, namely the contention that rational activity consisted in the manipulation and association of faint sensory images, something of which even animals were capable. David Hume? A Christian philosopher? I think not…

"“When we run over libraries, persuaded of these principles, what havoc must we make? If we take in our hand any volume of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance, let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames, for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion.”

An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding

I don’t think many Catholic books or writers would escape that
book ban logic…

No, you are wrong barbarian if you think I have retraced my steps or that I apologize for what Ben Stein said. Ifg science leads to a 'David Hume" line of thinking than science leads to death because it removes the mystery of God from mankind or even the desire to seek God making it all illusion, myth and mirrors of fantasy. If that is what Darwin was lead to then he took the wrong fork in the road, lost his faith and wrote material that has bolsetered an atheistic view of man and creation. That is what allows for policies like abortion, euthanasia, ex selective abortions, treating the human body as if it is machinery only…all that is death.

To me it is libel on your part to deny these things are tied up with the scientific view of the person which we are teacjhing in our schools today. Instead of teaching young people that they are more that biological machines, that they have a spirit, emotions, that their memories can affect them and to take care not to damage those aspects of their being by treating things like casual sex as a big taboo…instead kids are told that their bodies are theirs to do with as they please and the end lesson is old fashio traditions of waiting til marriage are counterproductive…
because pleasure is paramount and they should have a number of relationships before settling down. That is not a way to treat the human person, and yet it is how we approach the person today…

I still believe you are the one in denial.

In Christ, maryJohnZ
