Benedict returns to Vatican to live side-by-side with Pope Francis

Pope Francis eliminated the Vatican barber shop to save money. šŸ™‚

Personally I’d like to see both with beards.
They could. Benedict XVI is a secular priest. He has not rule of life. He can dress as he wishes. Pope Francis is a Jesuit. The Jesuit statutes do not prohibit a beard. Pope Francis would look like Santa. He has a little pot belly. šŸ˜›
Was the plan always for him to return to the Vatican? I thought he was supposed to live at the other place (can’t remember the name) indefinitely? Also, why did he return if he is not technically the Pope anymore?
The name that you can’t remember is Castel Gandorfo. He can’t stay there. That’s one of the pope’s residences. The monastery where he will be living also belongs to the Vatican, but it’s not the pope’s home. Gandolfo is the pope’s home, which I don’t see Pope Francis using it much. They say it’s beautiful. I studied in Rome, but never visited Castel Gandolfo.
I hope he remembers to pray for his former sheep - confused, lost or otherwise. :o
LOL

Trust me, if he prays for the Church, all the livestock will be included, even the sheep. 😃

Gotcha. Thanks!

The media keeps saying ā€œtwo popesā€ in residence. They are mistaken. There is one pope. The Diocese of Rome can only have one bishop. The others are vicars and auxiliaries.

Let’s look at the USA. If I put the two Carter, the Bush men, Clinton and Obama in the same room, I wouldn’t say that there are five presidents. There is a president and four former presidents.

In monarchies they do the same thing. When the monarch dies, the queen becomes the Queen Mother and her daughter-in-law becomes the queen. There are not to queens.

In other circles the term ā€œemeritusā€ is used, more common in the Church and in academia.
You are kind of splitting hairs here. Just last week at the bush library dedication lots of people were saying ā€œfive presidentsā€ when they referred to the group of former presidents. And like political leaders seek out advice from former presidents, I am sure that a number of cardinals will seek out the guidance of his holiness emeritus pope Benedict during his ( hopefully long) retirement.

I have to agree with those who have said that certain members of the media are attempting to create a controversy where none likely exists. Both of these men have been in the upper tier of Church leadership for sometime, and surely understand what their respective roles are.
Having someone like PE Benedict, with his widely acknowledge grasp of doctrine and theology, nearby is probably viewed as a great asset by the new Pontiff (I’m just guessing obviously).

There can be and always has been only one legitimate Pope. What we see today is one ex-Pope (technically a Bishop I think?) and the current Pope living in Vatican City.

Yes, exciting times, and yes, Benedict looks frail. Pray for them both.
Actually, when it comes to a bishop, there is no such thing as an ā€œex bishopā€. A bishop is always a bishop, even one in retirement. The proper title is a former pope. Let’s not forget that the pope is a bishop.

Two popes in residence! There haven’t been two popes in residence ever, as far as I know. During the Great Schism the various popes were in different cities, I think. These are indeed exciting times!
No, one Pope in residence, Pope Francis. Our beloved Benedect is our retired pope and no longer has any authority other than all the other retired bishops have. Lets keep them both in our love and prayers. God Bless, Memaw
He is not a retired pope. He is a former pope. In other words, he is no longer a pope at all. The papacy is an office, not part of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Unlike the bishopric, one can be a retired bishop, because one cannot undo ordination. One can certainly abdicate an office, which is what he did.

We know that to be unconstitutional. It’s just bad English. There can only be one president and former presidents. We should not apply American ignorance to the Holy See. The Vatican has enough problems without acting like Americans.

That all depends on the pope. Since this is uncharted waters, because we’ve never had a pope and a former pope, we don’t know what the rules will be.

Pope Francis can prohibit this or the Pope Emeritus can refuse to become involved. My guess is that Pope Francis won’t have to prohibit anything. Pope Emeritus will not make himself available in that capacity. Benedict XVI is a scholar, a gentleman and a humble man. I can see him pointing said cardinals back to the proper authorities to get their advice.

There is also the other piece of this. He no longer has access to what goes on inside the Vatican. He does not attend meetings. He is not privy to confidences. He has less rights at the Vatican than do bishops of dioceses. He no longer has a diocese under his care or any office in the Church. There is no need for him to be in the loop. His advice is limited to what he knows, not what may happen after he left office.

I can see some cardinals making this mistake, because they are products of their cultures, especially Americans and Europeans. In our countries former heads of state seem to dabble in the affairs of state, even though they are no longer in the loop. People often turn to them for guidance. Again, being the man that he is, I can also see Benedict XVI discouraging this or not making himself available.

I think the title of this thread is misleading. It makes it sound as if Benedict and Francis will be virtual roommates in the Apostolic Palace, when, in fact, neither of them lives there. It has been widely publicized that Pope Emeritus Benedict will live a life of prayer and study in that converted convent in another part of Vatican City. Everything I’ve read points to being back in the thick of things at Pope Francis’ ā€œsideā€ is the last thing Benedict would want.

Never has been and never will be, God Bless, Memaw
Well, you’re being roundly flamed in the other thread for your denials so I’ll just let you read there. I appreciate your desire for Christian unity, but being snobby about the Catholic Church’s position and denying a rightful title to someone who’s had it as long as Francis and his predecessors is not any way to further ecumenical relations.

I think it must be a thrill for both Pope Emeritus Benedict and Pope Francis to occasionally visit with each other – two saints on earth sharing company on earth, awaiting heavenly company.

The truth is the truth even if it hurts. I don’t recall ever being ā€œroundly flamedā€ as you put it. I don’t deny anything ever about the truth of the Catholic Church. If that’s being ā€œsnubbyā€ as you claim, I recall what Archbishop Fulton J Sheen said, ā€œThe TRUTH is the TRUTH even if nobody believes it and a lie is still a lie even if everyone believes it.ā€ God Bless, Memaw

I have found it so insipiring to see all of the loving and respectful messages here for Emeritus Pope Benedict. I could see the Holy Spirit at work in him as he grew in the office of pope.

He was an amazing Pope. I hope he will be made a Doctor of the Church someday šŸ™‚
