Not really surprising when you consider that until 60 years ago or so, the simplest of infections could be deadly. We forget how profoundly modern hygiene and medicine has changed life expectancies.
 
Just for perspective, I count 63 popes since 1400, based on the Wikipedia list.

According to the website which was the source of the information in the article, Pope Leo XIII was the oldest. I guess 13 isn’t always an unlucky number. :o

He lived to be 93. Since Pope Benedict is 83, he has roughly 10 years to go. I say roughly since counting the days may be important. Pope Benedict may be #7 on the list, but he had to edge with four other popes who were 83.
