Vatican City, Dec 7, 2009 / 11:42 am (CNA).- In a meeting with a group of Brazilian bishops on Saturday, the Holy Father warned of the dangers of Marxist liberation theology and noted its grave consequences for ecclesial communities.

During the ad limina visit, the Pope recalled that “last August marked 25 years since the Instruction “Libertatis nuntius” of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on certain aspects of liberation theology. The document “highlights the danger involved in the uncritical absorption, by certain theologians, of theses and methodologies that come from Marxism.”

The Pope warned that the “more or less visible” scars of Marxist liberation theology, such as “rebellion, division, dissent, offenses, anarchy, are still being felt, causing great suffering and a grave loss of dynamic strength in your diocesan communities.”

…not to mention grave & sacrilegious distortion of the gospel/words of Jesus.
 
Liberation theology does not seem to go out of fashion in third world countries, and is supported by people in the Church. I have attended a seminar recently, where the organizers openly supported this teaching.

Maybe the Vatican has to release a very strong statement of rejecting liberation theology outright so that the people concerned get the message right.

This very article has been started as a thread in the Politics section.

I agree that LT has been given new life in this country under the current administration. As I posted on the other thread, how many believe this warning will be taken to heart by those in the Church who have so distorted social justice teaching? Blame it on the Jesuits if you will, but its crazy influence has confused many faithful Catholics - I’m alarmed at the posters on CAF who seem to embrace it.
 
I don’t mean to get too off topic, but does anyone know if the Jesuit order condones problematic liberation theology from the top down, or is it a problem that the superiors of the order are trying to stamp out?
