How have you done the Divine Office? I have yet to participate, but it looks confusing to a newcomer like me. The Discalced Carmelites (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Community) do it immediately following the Rosary and right before Mass.
Lauds just about first thing in the morning.

Vespers just after I close the pharmacy.

Get the iBreviary app for your smartphone. It has (almost) made the paper one obsolete (although special offices using the app, eg, BVM on a Saturday, can be a pain).

Thanks! I will look into it - I have the latest Blackberry, not the iPhone. Does it take very long to do in a congregational setting?

Lauds 20-25 min alone; 30-35 in a group

Vespers 10-15 min alone, 20ish in a group

No wonder the OCDS meeting lasts for six hours … I should be pretty holy by the meeting’s conclusion, eh?

You are quoting those numbers for the Roman Breviary correct? It takes my wife and I approx. 15 - 20 minutes for Lauds together and about 10 - 12 for Compline. We rarely do Vespers since our schedules are so different.

At the Abbey, it took about 30 minutes for Lauds and about 40 for Vespers, but they are on a two week cycle with the Psalter and they take their time; they speak/sing slowly and have lots of pauses and silent time for reflection, that sort of thing.

The American Benedictine Review. A scholarly journal on topics of Monasticism and Benedictine spirituality and history. Looks interesting.

Peace,

That is a great little map, Jason.

By the way, I hope you realize your posts after midnight are really, really late for those of us in the East. I am not rude; I generally hit the sack earlier and don’t see them until the next morning. Just letting you know why I respond so late.

David

Jason,

As an aside, I briefly e-mailed my lay contact at St. Leo’s to gently remind him of my interest in the Benedictine oblate community. I’ll update you once (if) I receive a response.

Yes 🙂

No worries at all. We all have our own schedules and things going on, but thanks for the heads up.

Peace,

Sounds good. If you don’t hear anything I would contact one of the monks involved with the Oblates and see if you get anywhere there instead.

Peace,

Opus Dei meeting at their Study Center at 8:00 tonight! I will post an update after it concludes. My curiosity knows no bounds.

Saintly men. If you can get one of St Escriva’s small books of “thoughts/meditations”, they are very good.🙂

I like freebies. Sounds like a good book. I was hoping he would give me a copy of “The Way”.

I am really looking forward to your report about the meeting, BTW.🙂

If you could, ask him where the nearest Opus Dei whatever they’re called ( :o ) is to California’s central valley (south of Sacramento). When I looked into it nearly 20 years ago, it was a 1.5 hour drive.
