Best and Worst time to go to the bathroom during mass?

At my parish people come and go throughout all parts of the service. Sometimes you just can’t wait.
 
When it has had to happen, I don’t leave (or return) during the Gospel or the Our Father.

I recall seeing ushers halt people from entering during certain parts of the Mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. I think they put a velvet rope across the main aisle.
 
One Latin Mass I used to attend had its bathroom in the school building next door. The only key to it was kept in, get this, inside the confessional. 🙂

I developed the habit of stopping at a gas station before I went to that church.

That seems to be very common. I don’t know why. It’s what, all of about two minutes?

It seems like a lot of old churches did not have bathrooms. Of course the Masses in the pre-Vatican 2 era were shorter.

I have IBS, but that’s never been a problem during Sunday Masses, possibly because I get up and have breakfast four hours before 1100 Mass begins. I suspect I would definitely have problems if it were my habit to sleep as late as possible and get up just in time to make it. I have learned to plan ahead.

That is why fasting from the night before Mass is such a good idea! (for grownups)

Yes, but in the case of IBS, it can flare up whether you eat or not. I have to have a cut off time the night before and then take meds in the morning. And there’s still no guarantee of getting through that hour even with a pre-Mass trip to the little girl’s room.

Yeah, some people have it a lot worse than I do. I consider myself fortunate, and I feel for those who have it worse, remembering times when mine wasn’t that well controlled.
