I have great respect for Ireland and its people. That said, one of my best friends is very Irish and I was at his house for a party once, and he was extolling the virtues of Ireland - till someone said “if Ireland is so great, why wouldn’t they fight Hitler?”
It was an awkward moment…and yet…isn’t that maybe a fair question? Sorry to be a boor.
The US refused to ‘fight Hitler’ until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and Hitler declared war on the US. So not much different from Ireland. I’m sure if Ireland too had been attacked they would have gotten involved to the best of their ability.
Although I’m really giving the question too much weight. One question is hardly enough to determine if a country is ‘great’. Especially when it involves something from 70 years ago and completely ignores everything else a country has done, before and after, as well as the reasons why they chose their course of action.
Before you think I’m been defensive, my country did help fight Hitler. We didn’t wait for him to declare war on us. We entered when Great Britain declared war on Germany. I guess that means Australia is a greater nation than the US? 'cause you know, apparently this is a very important question.
