Best Diocese to Live In?

I am recently back from 2.5 years contract work in Iraq and just got married. My wife and I are looking to start our family as soon as God wills it to be. My question to yall is what are the best dioceses in the US for raising a Catholic family in. I am looking for a new job at this time and relocation is not a problem for us. We would just like a place with a large and healthy community of Catholics with an orthodox outlook. Where I currently live (wife is still in Philippines awaiting US visa, long story :rolleyes: ), it is very heavily Protestant, it is about 20 miles to the nearest Catholic Church, but there are 3 Baptist churches within walking distance. I’m sure many of yall know the kind of area im talking about. Thank you all in advance for your responses.
 
I’ve heard great things about the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska.

I love our diocese (Phoenix), because we have the best Bishop (whom we stole from Wichita)! 😃
 
The diocese of Wichita, KS. I know… everyone says “Kansas, no way” but it’s a nice mid-size city of about 500K. The diocese is strong and orthodox. You can look up the website for the diocese at www.cdowk.org Anyway, that’s my vote!

We miss him but we have an awsome bishop to replace him too!!
 
I’m seconding Phoenix… love Bishop Olmstead!

Plus, the housing market has tanked out here… so you can get a GREAT deal on a house right now! 😃

Lots of defense contractors out here… Boeing, Honeywell, etc… places where ex-military might be able to get a job.

Priests from our diocese now Bishops of Dodge City KS. Salina KS and Auxiliary Bishop of Denver.
 
If you can tolerate Winter… the diocese of Fargo is an excellent one. 🙂 🙂

Only thing I can really say about winter is that it keeps the mosquitos away for a few months… .
 
Wichita KS. Believe it or not, that was my answer before I read any of the others! We just moved from there 😦 2 yrs ago, and it was wonderful. I miss it. Their emphasis on Catholic education is amazing–free parochial school for all active members of the parish, awesome Spiritual Life Center, and of course the Midwest Catholic Family Conference every summer. But we’re in a good diocese now with a strong new bishop here in KC-St. Joe. 👍
 
Just to throw a wrench into the whole thing, I have heard that places in Michigan and in Pennsylvania have great ones too. I don’t live in either of those places though, so, I don’t personally know. Didn’t some of Mother Angelica’s sisters go to, was it Arizona? Anyone know? I was thinking that the Bishop of that place asked them to come there and so it must be an awesome place now. Just my thoughts, since you asked.

Thank you all for your answers i had heard of lincoln, ne also but cant find many jobs in that area. witchita, ks i will look into. i hadnt heard about the good diocese in pheonix or fargo. I like both cities from what i remember of them and will look into all of these great suggestions further. we can adapt to the cold or heat and small towns or cities are not a problem. we just want a place where we can associate with other Catholics more easily and a community strong in Catholic values. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also more specific information about what makes these communities great would be nice to know. Again thank you all who have already responded.
 
We have lived in Charlotte Diocese for 23 years. It is great.
Our parish is growing and booming incredibly. There are more than 100 new families registered this year so far. Our parish has close to 2000 families and it keeps on growing. NC has good weather, no severe winter and summer is not too long.

Thirding the Diocese of Phoenix…Bishop Olmstead is great, not too mention all of the priests I’ve ever met here.

Plus the weather isnt bad and as duskyjewel said, you can probably get a good deal on a house right now.
 
The Diocese of Baker in Oregon has a great bishop, Bishop Vasa. Personally, I would not consider any other diocese in the three West coast states.

Nice weather, Kentucky southern charm. It’s even fun in the mission parishes (like where I am).
 
Again, Thank all for your responses so far, there are many great ideas. Great to know about Lexington, have a resume out in that part of Kentucky (i think). I’m also very interested in Phoeniz. Does anyone know about the Houston diocese, just had a preliminary interview with a company looking for someone in the Pasadena area to the southeast of Houston. Thanks again for all the responses.
