Best Diocese to Live In?

I live in the Archdiocese of Denver. I love our Archbishop Chaput!

There’s the big city but also plenty of rural areas in the Archdiocese.

We have churches ranging from our beautiful Cathedral to some of those round ones with the altar in the middle. We also have some more liberal priests in spots. But I suspect that the Archbishop has been gently pushing for change, just based on what I’ve seen in my own parish.

My experience is not extensive. We went through RCIA here, and don’t plan on changing parishes anytime soon!

Can’t believe no one has mentioned the “Rome of the West” yet…

ST. LOUIS!!! (yes, seriously, we have been “named” this).

VERY Catholic (pope came here in 99) we’ve had great bishops

Best place to raise a family
best sports fans in the country (actually was named this one year)
best drinking tap water in the country
italian catholics in south city live on the “hill” and have authentic italian restaurants
-best frozen custard anywhere: Ted Drewes
-Cardinals baseball (this particular year not a big selling point)
best zoo in the country (Free), one of the best and well-known in the world
(yes even better than san diego)
Cathedral has the most mosaics under one roof in the whole world
then to the black madonna shrine, which is very primitive/child-like yet honest decoration and grottos
we have the 4 beer tour:
Grant’s farm…see the animals on a tram, then get 2 free budweisers (or
other of the many choices that busch makes
then to the A. Busch brewery, for 2 more free beers
and these tours are all free

lots and lots of free stuff here.

and within 1 1/2 hour drive you get the “floating” capital…lots of rivers to canoe and camp

Hey, I grew up in St. Louis. It is all true. The Zoo is fantastic and it is FREE! And it officially ranked as one of the 10 best zoos in the world. Free admission!!

Housing is quite affordable. It is a good place to raise a family.

Being a die hard Aggie – Gig 'Em Ags!!! – I will say that the College Station area is fantastic. There are four Catholic churches in the Bryan/College Station area. There is a Catholic School – St. Joseph stjosephschoolbcs.org Since I don’t have children, I cannot attest to the orthodoxy level, but this area tends to be pretty conservative so…

Cost of living here is pretty decent. Cost of houses is not the best, but as far as other quality of life costs, it can’t be beat. You’re 20 minutes from just about anything you want to do. With the university here there are always lots of inexpensive things to do – just don’t count football or basketball tickets to be one of them

I know what you are talking about. I’m class of '02 myself WHOOP!!! Wish I could move back to college station always thought it would be a great place to raise a family, unfortunately not much work for me down there. Best of luck in Aggieland GIG EM

I’ve been reading about election stuff all day, so have not been back on since this morning and so just found and read this thread. I kept reading and thinking “Why hasn’t anyone mentioned St. Louis yet?” and then I found this great post. I live in a suburb of St. Louis and I can’t imagine living anywhere else! This is a great city and has a lot to offer anyone.

This is also a great Catholic city. Though we have just lost Archbishop Burke to the Vatican, we will hopefully be getting a new Archbishop soon and also one who is as faithful to Church teachings as Archbishop Burke was while our shepherd here in St. Louis.

Sorry, I ment it in a “most of the small towns out this way were built around the Catholic Church.” I ment no disrespect to the east side. Though I am curious as to which parish you are talking about.

I know what you’re talking about. My family went there for a very short time because of convenience. They hadn’t built the new church yet, it was still the little old one (you know, the one that actually looked like a church). That parish from what I hear is still standing right on the line, but hasn’t crossed it completely.

And I grew up on the east side, Magdalen and Kapaun. Although to be honest for financial reasons I might choose the west side when we move back. It’s a tad more affordable over there.

Nope, sadly that one is still…well, let’s just say our protestant brethren would feel VERY comfortable there. Sigh.
BUT, there is Magdalen on the east side now which is a wonderful, traditional, faithful parish. I sure miss Wichita.

Isn’t St. Louis the 2nd or 3rd murder capital of the country per capita. I read that a couple of years ago while planning a trip and got scared off.

no it absolutely is not. EAST St. Louis is not good…other side of the river…its considered a different city by St. Louisans on the west side

Statistics are not accurate…Statistics are taken for St. Louis city/east side only…rather than including the HUUUUGEEE suburb area.

The parish priest there (Magdalen) is awsome and we wish he was back on this side of town. He was the priest at the parish I attended RCIA at:thumbsup:

Bishop Olmsted was ordained a priest in Lincoln in 1973; Bishop Jackels was ordained a priest in Lincoln in 1981.

We miss them both here but know they are doing great work in Phoenix and Wichita. Both are a legacy of our late Bishop Flavin, to whom we in Lincoln owe so much.

I know this is not a very orthodox diocese like I was hoping for, but there must be a reason for being called out there. I prayed for guidance in my job search and 2 days later was contacted by this company and 2 days after that was offered work. So thank you all again for your assistance.

No idea why I’ve been shown such trust , just hope i don’t dissapoint. My understanding of the Seattle area is that you must be ever ready to give battle the heathens :knight2: But it seems like I may have been further blessed one of the closest churches to the area im looking for an apartment in has perpetual adoration. Hoping this means they are fairly orthodox. Adoration seems to be very limited in most seattle diocese parishes.

I am just very happy to finally know the direction i’m being sent again and thank God for this opportunity. Thanks again to everyone who has given advice on this thread.

DO NOT move to the diocese of Toledo, Ohio. The whole diocese seems to be in turmoil and we’ve been closing and twinning churches right and left.
But, we just came back from vacation in Kentucky, and there is quite a large Catholic population just south of Louisville around the Bardstown-Elizabethtown area. We stopped at a beautiful church St Josephs Proto Cathedral in Bardstown and they were getting ready to celebrate the 200th anniv. of the Louisville diocese. We were really impressed. There is also a monestary a few miles away, which is also beautiful.
