Do you think it’s hard to find a decent movie to rent lately?
These are the last few I watched and they were huge disappointments…
The Upside of Anger
Boogeyman
Surviving Christmas (I think possibly this is the worst movie ever made)

The last movie I saw at the show was Ladder 49 I want to take my grand daughter to see March of the Penguins. Has anyone seen it?

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!!! You didn’t like, “Boogeyman”!!! Why not!!! I consider that a GREAT movie!! The story line was coherent throughout & all those little touches that contributed to the bigger picture!! I mean, there were NO plot holes…so very few movies have that feat.

Ummm…let’s see, good movies, good movies…hmmmm…ummm…
  1. Minority Report
  2. Entropy
That’s all I can think about right now. Both of them were discovered by accident. To tell you the truth, my friends & I have given up on finding GOOD movies. We deliberately rent bad ones and are kind of dissapointed when a movie turns out to be decent. Trust me, it’s just easier to look for bad movies because there’s just so many out there.

Hmm this may be because I really like anything to do with the Civil Way but Gods and Generals is now one of my favourite movies, it came out in 2003 but only got a chance to see it now, and I must say it is good. I bought it last week watched it like 3 times so far.

The last movie I saw in the theaters was the Therese Movie this past February. Before that, it was the Passion of the Christ (4 times) the previous year. The bilge that is comming out of Hollywood right now is not worth seeing.

My daughter, who loves penguins, liked it. It of course is a documentary and gives information about penguins. Morgan Freeman narrates while you watch penguins in the wild. No talkin penquins here.

I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with my kids and liked it. Johnny Deep is very talented. In fact I’ve enjoyed most of the movies he’s been in.

YES! The Only film that was Worth watching! And the BEST part is that is wan’t made with Hollywood’s premission!
Way to go Mel! 👍

“March of the Penguins” was a delight, as was
“The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.”

I go all the time…my recent favs are

The Devils Rejects
The Island
The Skeleton Key

Looking forward to The Brothers Grimm and Exorcism of Emily Rose.

I was in a classical mood so this weekend I watched:

Immortal Beloved based on the life of Ludwid van Beethoven. It shows him as an angry, hurt, bitter man – in contrast to music that seems almost Divinely inspired. I’m sure the film took a lot of liberties butthe main histroical outlines seemed accurate.

and

Amadeus based, of course, on Mozart. But it is just as much about his rival, Salieri, who aspired to be a great composer but lacked Mozart’s talent. Throughout the film (narrated by Salieri) Salieri explains how he hates God for giving him a love for music and the desire to create it – but not the ability. All very interesting and of course the music and costumes are great in both films.

What age would you rate this at. My grand daughter is 4 and I saw the original and wasn’t sure whether this was age appropriate.

I took all of my children to see it - ages 13 - 3. Of course the older ones liked it most but the little one was OK with it also. I don’t recall anything scary - except maybe a scene with some aggressive squirls. (how is that word spelled?)

I think the best movie I have seen in a long time is

Life as a House

It is a must see, but not for young children.

The Passion of the Christ
The Gospel of John

Last movie I saw in the theater was

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 👍

My dad is a civil war expert and I was excited to go see this with him. Although there were many historical facts other aspects were so historically inaccurate that he hated the movie. It could have been great if it stuck to historical accuracy, rather than the primary focus on making Stonewall Jackson out to be a hero.
This movie was excoriated by the critics as being “too accurate” historically and, therefore, not a good movie. Turns out that this is only partly the story of the first half of the Civil War. Mostly, it is the story of the legend that is Stonewall Jackson. Now, the facts that are portrayed in the movie are accurate. BUT, the movie fails to tell either Jackson’s story or the story of the Civil War. How did Jackson become a legend? You won’t find out from this movie. It skips from First Manassas directly to Fredericksburg. What happened to the Peninsula Campaign? Valley Campaign? Second Manassas? Antietam? You can’t portray all these battles in detail in one small movie, but your main character became a legend in these battles. Shouldn’t at least part of these be portrayed…maybe with some cut scenes that bridge from Manassas to Fredericksburg? I disliked this film for choosing to portray factual details as more important than the story itself. It must have been an attempt to show that there were heroes on both sides, anyway too much time was wasted in this area. Another movie that could have been really great if it had been more accurate, The Patriot, by Mel Gibson. In my opinion when making a historical movie, it better be as accurate as possible because our society tends to get it’s education from the media, rather than history books. This is one of my pet peeves.

It’s an older movie but I just saw “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the first time. Just great. And while I am at the whole Gregory Peck thing, everyone would love “Scarlet and Black” if you have not seen it.

I will try to only include movies you may not have seen, so am leaving out many obvious greats…

DRAMA;

In America from academy award nominee, Jim Sheridan. A personal tale of a poor Irish family searching for a better life in America. Through the eyes of their daughters, two anguished parents find hope and teh ability to once again believe in love and magic The acting is wonderful, the story is true to life, yet the family can find magic in the toughest conditions. I HIGHLY recommend this movie. It has one sex scene between a married couple (not overly explicit) rated PG 13 not for kids

***House of Sand and Fog ***This film explores the unhealthy attachment people can have with material objects, in this movie, a house. Every person in a situation has a story and reason for their actions

***Hotel Rwanda ***I was blown away by this movie. It is the true story of the manager of Hotel Rwanda who saves thousands of fellow Rwandans, including his own family from being slaughtered. There are violent scenes which are necessary to the movie. The violence is similar to Schindler’s List. I highly recommend this movie. Amidst the violence and terror the people find hope, love and strength. It is an uplifting reminder of what God can do with one person who is willing to make a difference. Truly inspiring!

About Schmidt : When an insurance businessman retires, and his wife dies, he looks for life’s meaning on a road trip to his daughter’s (Hope Davis) upcoming wedding to a waterbed salesman (Dermot Mulroney). But Warren can’t seem to get anything right. En route to the wedding, he shares his life through letters with a Tanzanian boy he’s sponsoring for 73 cents a day … and soon, Warren discovers renewed purpose. This movie quickly draws you in and takes you through an emotional journey. It will make you laugh cry and even turn your head in fear as it does have a wee bit of unpleasant nudity for comedic affect. Jack Nicholson give an amazing performance. This movie may even help you to better understand the grouchy old men in your life!

Romance:

***The Notebook ***A must see for anyone who is committed to their spouse for life. In the case of The notebook, I liked the movie better than the book.

Finding Neverland This is now one of my favorite movies. Not for younger children but appropriate for teens. This movie will make you laugh cry and be inspired. Gorgeous!

Romantic Comedy:
***Spanglish ***Alot of people were disappointed with this movie, especially fans of Adam Sandler’s usual work (which I am) but I found it refreshingly funny with a good ending, not the typical Hollywood ending. The characters were well-developed and had chemistry. Adam Sandler also eats my favorite kind of sandwich!

***Hitch ***My husband wanted to rent this, and I was prepared to be annoyed, but I actually liked this movie. My favorite part was, supporting actor, Kevin James, from tv’s King of Queens. He steals the show, I was cracking up at the dance scenes! I watched it with my parents and we all enjoyed it.
