Some movies I enjoyed watching with my kids:

Second Hand Lions This movie has a small bit of violence, fighting, and guns so it is for more mature children, my husband and I watched it before we decided to allow our kids to watch. That is what I would recommend.

Peter Pan The new live action version for a few years ago, the sets are breathtaking, the acting is great and the story line is more in keeping with the original play than Disney’s animated version.

What age would you rate this at. My grand daughter is 4 and I saw the original and wasn’t sure whether this was age appropriate.
I think it’s better suited than the original for younger kids. My neice says it follows the book more closely. I liked how it ends in a good moral way.

My 6 yr. old saw it and she hid her eyes a couple of times.

I am probably not the person that anyone wants to pick out movies for them. I am easily pleased. Also, I don’t know why, but horror movies are my guilty pleasure. ( My birthday falls on Halloween, so maybe that has something to do with it)

Horror Movies

I liked Boogey Man quite a bit. It wasn’t too violent and had a pretty unique storyline. Plus the little girl in the movie played such an understated part. She was very good.

I watched Hide and Seek, it was an okay movie. Suspensful at first but the ending was a let down.

The Grudge Although this had several moments that made me jump, I was disappointed in this film. It is unique in its concept but I was a little bit offended at the thought that a murder victim would want to hurt anyone. I didn’t think that it was scary, though.

**The Ring **A pretty good movie.

Comedies

Hitch
I liked it a lot-much to my surprise. It had a good overall message.

Shrek 2 I loved this movie. Very funny. A bit of potty humor but good fun overall. I especially loved Antonio Banderas character

Shawn of the Dead I guess this is a comedy. It is a spoof on the horror classic Dawn of the Dead-which I have never seen. It had funny parts. An okay movie-not great.

**Are we there yet? **I rented this off of payperview for my kids. Cute movie. Not great but not bad. It had some funny parts. Nothing hilarious though.

Second Hand Lions After rereading Peaces post, I realized that I have recently seen this movie also. I enjoyed it and my sons loved it.
Great movie

Well of course, **The Passion of the Christ. **The greatest movie, in my opinion, that has ever been made.

It’s an older movie but I just saw “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the first time. Just great. And while I am at the whole Gregory Peck thing, everyone would love “Scarlet and Black” if you have not seen it.
I love To Kill a Mockingbird! One of the greatest ever made. At the end of the trial, when the elderly black man says “Stand up, Scout. Your father’s passing”, I just cry every time. What an incredibly moving line. If you really like Gregory Peck, get the origina Cape Fear-- what a chilling movie!

As for recent movies-- this summer’s biggie was Batman: The Beginning. I am not a big Batman fan, but this movie was awesome!

I love To Kill a Mocking Bird, Passion of the Christ, and want to see Batman: The Beginning. My husband and I really enjoyed Spiderman1 & 2. We have the DVD’s so skip the scenes that are too violent for our kids.

One comedy that I will always love is
The Jerk a truly great movie if you have never seen it or it has been a long time, by all means, watch it.

I also wanted to point out that In America also beautifully illustrates a pro-life message, as well loving your neighbor, and caring for and treating the sick with dignity. The little girls in this movie are very natural, cute but not in a deliberate way. They act like real children. It promotes the value of human life and persevering through pain and suffering, to love. It is artfully filmed and as a family who has struggled financially and moved frequently I could relate to it. I own it if that tells you anything!

Reciprocity

Return to Me

Peter Pan(the new live action one from last year, I think)

Racing Stripes

If I think of more, I’ll post 'em!!!

I usually go ever week or so, and the last ones I’ve seen were:

The Island: Awesome, I can’t believe it flopped!!
The Wedding Crashers: Crude, but it has it’s moments
Dukes Of Hazzard: Could have been better

The movies i’m looking forward to seeing are Four Brothers, and Red Eye

I don’t usually go to a theatre so see a movie. Used to years ago, but I became tired of the junk put out there as “entertainment.”
I did go to see The Passion of The Christ at the theatre and am considering going to see The Great Raid. The last movie that we rented that I watched was Ladder 49. I liked that one. I plan on renting Return To Me, I have heard it is a good one. I am reading everyone’s posts to get some ideas for some good movies to rent!🙂

Return to Me
Yes, yes, I agree! Love that movie!! I can’t speak highly enough of it. I wish they would make more like this one.

Two of my favorite suspense thrillers are:

The Sixth Sense

**Signs **I particularly recommend signs. It has absolutely no gore, and shows no real violence. It relies on suspense and has more the feeling of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The characters are well-developed and I was drawn in by the great performances of Mel Gibson and Joaquim Phoenix. Everything in the movie ties neatly together. It uses the theme of God in our lives, everything happening for a reason and throughout the movie we see a man struggling with his relationship with God and the mourning of a loved one. If you haven’t seen this movie it is a great recommendation in the suspense’thriller genre for Catholic Answers members. You won’t regret it., I own Sixth Sense and Signs on DVD, and I am very choosey.

My dad is a civil war expert and I was excited to go see this with him. Although there were many historical facts other aspects were so historically inaccurate that he hated the movie. It could have been great if it stuck to historical accuracy, rather than the primary focus on making Stonewall Jackson out to be a hero.
This movie was excoriated by the critics as being “too accurate” historically and, therefore, not a good movie. Turns out that this is only partly the story of the first half of the Civil War. Mostly, it is the story of the legend that is Stonewall Jackson. Now, the facts that are portrayed in the movie are accurate. BUT, the movie fails to tell either Jackson’s story or the story of the Civil War. How did Jackson become a legend? You won’t find out from this movie. It skips from First Manassas directly to Fredericksburg. What happened to the Peninsula Campaign? Valley Campaign? Second Manassas? Antietam? You can’t portray all these battles in detail in one small movie, but your main character became a legend in these battles. Shouldn’t at least part of these be portrayed…maybe with some cut scenes that bridge from Manassas to Fredericksburg? I disliked this film for choosing to portray factual details as more important than the story itself. It must have been an attempt to show that there were heroes on both sides, anyway too much time was wasted in this area. Another movie that could have been really great if it had been more accurate, The Patriot, by Mel Gibson. In my opinion when making a historical movie, it better be as accurate as possible because our society tends to get it’s education from the media, rather than history books. This is one of my pet peeves.
Well, yeah totally agree for the patriot, a good movie but lacking in historicity. Regarding Gods and Generals Maxwell the director did film most of the battles you are referring to. His cut for the movie was 6 and a half hours long, unfortunately he had to trim most of it. Still I did like the attention to detail and tone of the film.

They were suppose to release these directors cut, but Turner didn’t fund it, I can only hope they eventually do as I love long movies and would like to see the extra footage.

I do agree there were some parts that you could tell had scenes before shot to explaini them but they cut those, such as Jacksons speach when he is being promoted.

In my opinion still a great movie. And I think I like it better than Gettysburg, though that was amazing as well.

I really like Gettysburg and look forward to watching the directors cut of God & Generals, I bet I will enjoy it much more! Of course, I was sitting next to my dad who was critiquing the movie so it may have had an affect on me! LOL

The worst line in the Patriot is where Mel Gibson’s character is sitting on the beach with the leading lady and she says “Why not, it’s a free country… well… almost.”

Black Hawk Down I read the book in 1999 and was thrilled with how close to the book the movie was.
We Were Soldiers Once and Young Also a great book and movie. I especially like the way they show the families at home, I could relate to that!

Yeah I found that line to be kinda corny as well, but all and all I did enjoy Patriot. Regarding the Director’s Cut, I cant wait, if I had lots of money I would give some to get it to come out. Hopefully Maxwell can get the funding, otherwise all the work of the re-enactors will have gone to waste.

I am sure you know the final part of the trilogy is suppose to come out as well “The Last Full Measure” unortunately due to the unsuccessful run of Gods and Generals they might not do it. I think it would be a shame if they dont finish the triology while the actors still look the same and are in good enough health to finish the movies.

Finding Neverland

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Hitch

In Good Company

We are renters, not movie goers, and limited on movie watching time, so my list may be a little outdated.

Coach Carter

National Treasure

and though I really hate to say it: Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Someone reccommened this to me and I had no idea what it was about. Though there is some irreverance in it, and some returning of meanness with meanness, which I did not like, there is much reference to Christianity and the performances were great. It was also very funny in many spots.
