From AsiaNews:
In his message for t [sic] Benedict XVI’s 80th birthday, Patriarch Alexi II praises the pontiff’s defence of Christian values, “the solid base on which collaboration between the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Church can be built. Msgr. Kondrusiewicz underscores the Pope’s theological depth and the clarity of his positions, who is “seriously” committed to ecumenical dialogue. In Rome Catholics and Orthodox prayed “for the Pope and Christian unity”.

This is the same Patriach who snubbed Pope John Paul II when he visited Russia.

I wonder why the change of heart?
Of course, as the article notes, John Paul never actually visited Russia. I think in part it is the passage of time, with the Vatican politely knock-knocking at the door these past several years. Also, I don’t believe Benedict has done as much yet to offend the Russian Orthodox church as John Paul did.

Regardless, I’ll be quite surprised if Benedict gets to visit Russia during the next 4 or 5 years.

How did John Paul offend the Russian Orthodox church?

Fr Ambrose or Volodymyr or several others on the Eastern forum can probably give you the laundry list.
But you’re the one who said it. Why should I have to go look for something that may not even exist?

Fair point… You asked how did John Paul offend the Russian Orthodox Church. One of the highest-profile things he did which caused offense was visiting Ukraine. I don’t know that this is a completely unbiased source, but I think the paragraph is accurate enough:
When the Vatican announced the pope’s June visit to Ukraine, Moscow Patriarch Alexei II reacted with outrage. John Paul’s visit, he warned, could further strain relations between his Church and the Vatican. The Russian Federation also protested. Prime Minister Mikhail Kasianov met with the pope and raised the issue of his visit to Ukraine “in a frank form.” That’s diplomatese for saying he’s really upset.

An earlier poster nailed it. JPII was Polish. That’s crime enough in some parts of the world! Even worse if you represent the best of the historic Polish culture and faith.

Germans only invade and conquer. Thats not NEARLY as bad as spreading catholicism!
