Bestowal of the name of Jesus "pointed to future misfortune"?

This novena to St. Joseph which is on EWTN and that I am praying continues to raise questions.

Today’s meditation discusses how the “bestowal of the name of Jesus” on Mary’s child “pointed to future misfortune”. Where in the Scripture is this discussed? Matthew 1:21 does not seem to suggest the name of Jesus as being an indicator of misfortune, nor have I ever heard this come up in a discussion or meditation on the Holy Name of Jesus.

I tried to research it online but all I found was some past thread on this forum where a person who seemed disturbed (to put it kindly) was ranting about Jesus being an adaptation of the pagan Zeus. I think we can safely ignore that and file it under “confused person posting”.

Help me out here…it may be in an obvious place in the Bible and I’m just not remembering it.

Could they mean that by his name we know he has come to fulfill prophecy, and thus, will be put to death?

It’s certainly possible. I was just hoping there was some direct Scriptural support or at least some apocrypha making this more clear.

The name Jesus is derived from the Hebrew name Yeshu. Yeshu which is based on the Semitic root y-š-ʕ (Hebrew: ישע‎), meaning “to deliver; to rescue”.

Right - so how does this show future misfortune? He’s rescuing people from the mess of sin they already got into on their own before he showed up.

Maybe because the deliverer meaning is Messianic and Isaiah had already prophesied suffering and death.

Psalm 102 says, “They make My Name a curse.” And so it was fulfilled that the Talmud blasphemed Him by turning His Name into an acrostic for “May his name be blotted out.” Psalm 102 is one of the Crucifixion Psalms.
