Filius Prodigus:
What would you think of a priest masturbates to avoid fornicating? Or a nun or friar? What about a homosexual?

I don’t know if it’s an urban legend, but I’ve always thought that there was a principle that goes something like “Of two evils, choose the smallest” or something.
That is hard. On the one hand, you have gravely disturbed behavior. On the other hand, you lead your fellow Christians into sin…

Sometimes I’m glad I’m not the “judge” of all this… :whacky:

Tough Question…
Are that the only choices i can pick?
Yeah, really. I think it’s best to vote for None of the Above. 😉

Fallacy of the false dilemma.

:banghead: You’re right! I thought they were the only two options.

Slowly learning ex-atheist, I beg you all for patience and thank you for your :twocents:

May God multiply the blessings you (obviously) already have!

To determine which would be worse presupposes that an undesignated option is available.

That would be, of course, chastity. 👍

IMO there is no way to tell just by the two sins which one is more serious as far as I can measure. :ehh:

As far as I can tell, there is no Theological Trespass Rating system TTRS 😃

Smoking: 10.15
Spilling your seed: 12.05
:hmmm:

Smoking: 10.15
Spilling your seed: 12.05
Smoking within 25 feet of me: 15.95 and two black eyes
Adding yet another entry to the list of TTRSs: 16; the annoyance of the OP, Filus Prodigus, Benedictus, and others; and the loss of 5 minutes.😃

God bless,

Agricola

I already read the verse from the old testament and am currently re-reading Leviticus to find it. It is definitely written in the Scriptures and the reason being that spilling seed upon the ground was considered an abomination. therefore spilling seed into the womb of a whore was not abominable although it is a sin. Specifically the old testament mentions a man who withdrew during intercourse to avoid spilling his seed into the woman and was punished severely by God. Catholic teaching on marriage and intercourse states that a Catholic couple must be open to the transmission of life during each and every act of sexual intercourse. The seed from the man must be allowed to enter fully into the woman. It is allowed to practice NFP which is a schedule for intercourse where the woman’s fertile days are charted, then intercourse is avoided on those days and resumed when she is infertile. The Catholic church provides free programs in NFP. Your Archdiocese office should be able to direct you to the nearest program.

This statement is not in the Bible, however, it is in reference to a story in the Bible.

One of Judah’s sons, Er, married a woman named Tamar. Er was wicked and God killed him before Tamar could bear him children. According to the traditions of the time, Er’s younger brother, Onan, was supposed to take Tamar as his wife and give her children, but instead ejaculating inside her, he “spilled his seed on the ground.”

So, God struck Onan down, as well. Judah was afraid that it was Tamar’s fault that his sons were dying, and told her to go back to her father’s house instead of giving her his youngest son like he was supposed to.

Tamar, being completely slighted, decided that she would have a child one way or the other. She covered her face and dressed up as a prostitute and waited by one of the roads Judah frequented. Judah saw her and offered to pay her for sex, and Tamar said yes. Tamar was impregnated during the encounter, and Judah admitted that Tamar was more righteous than he was because he should’ve given his youngest son to her in marriage.

Onan’s part in this story has been the biggest lesson learned, though, and the word onanism refers to the sin masturbation (despite the fact that it’s not probable that act is what is referred to in this passage.) God struck Onan down for spilling his seed on the ground, and the result of Tamar’s prostitution was one of Jesus’s ancestors. Therefore, it’s better to spill your seed in the belly of a prostitute than on the ground.

The story is in Genesis 38. It doesn’t say that spilling seed on the ground is an abomination.

The proper choice is good over evil. It is the lustful thoughts of men which lead to such prioritization of sin. It is a vain attempt to justify fornication as being somehow less of a sin. Christ will judge based upon His command: “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me”. Notice that you must do two separate things before following Him. Denial of self means abstinence. Taking up your cross is to bear your weakness and temptation to sin. To follow is to rely on Him for your strength. My two cents (or Colones!)

The best way to avoid masturbation is to sprinkle holy water on your organ frequently while praying or blessed oil works also. Do not masturbate even if you want to strongly, eventually the feeling will go away. Or like they say, “Take a cold shower” May God Bless. Roy:)

Both acts are wrong, but masturbation is worse than prostitution IF you don’t use artificial contraception with the prostitute
Sorry, I have to disagree with you, I think that prostitution is worse than masturbation.

“For necessary sexual intercourse for begetting [children] is alone worthy of marriage. But that which goes beyond this necessity no longer follows reason but lust. And yet it pertains to the character of marriage . . . to yield it to the partner lest by fornication the other sin damnably [through adultery]. . . . [T]hey [must] not turn away from them the mercy of God . . . by changing the natural use into that which is against nature, which is more damnable when it is done in the case of husband or wife. For, whereas that natural use, when it pass beyond the compact of marriage, that is, beyond the necessity of begetting [children], is pardonable in the case of a wife, damnable in the case of a harlot; that which is against nature is execrable when done in the case of a harlot, but more execrable in the case of a wife. Of so great power is the ordinance of the Creator, and the order of creation, that . . . when the man shall wish to use a body part of the wife not allowed for this purpose [orally or anally consummated sex], the wife is more shameful, if she suffer it to take place in her own case, than if in the case of another woman” (The Good of Marriage 11–12 [A.D. 401]).

This St Augustine quote is possibly the nearest I could find in the Early Church Fathers, though it actually says contraception is worse than sleeping with a prostitute

Though always funny to see evangelicals trying to condemn masturbation after having defended contraception on the grounds that it is not condemned in the Bible

Fornication or adultery with a prostitute is a sin, however spilling seed on the bed or floor is an abomination. The definition of an abomination is that it makes God sick to His stomach to see it. Sins are possibly forgiven when confessed properly although abominations are nauseating to all humanity. May God Bless. Use Holy Water or Holy Oil and take a cold shower when tempted to masturbate or fornicate or adulterate. Pray to Jesus in His Holy Name to help you.

We may never choose evil. There is a common expression, “choose the lesser of two evils,” but it is not good morality. We must also choose something that is good, sometimes tolerating a lesser evil that is an unavoidable side effect of that good. (principle of the double effect)

Anyone who masturbates to “avoid fornicating” is on a path of deception. Sin leads to sin. What is needed is grace, the sacraments, perhaps counseling, and helps to chastity. Giving in to disordered desires will not make them go away.

To somewhat argue on the other side… I understand the philosophical/natural law arguments for masturbation being worse than open-to-life fornication… however, when one takes into account the effects of one’s actions (pregnancy out of wedlock, harm to the other’s body and soul), it would seem that masturbation is certainly less harmful overall.

Of course, for the sinner, both are equally “harmful.” Both are grave matter for mortal sins, and for a person to engage in one sin in the hope of avoiding another… still gets him or her to hell.

Saying that one grave sin is better than another is sort of like David Berkowitz bragging that he wasn’t as bad a serial killer as John Wayne Gacy or Ted Bundy.

Well said.

:rotfl: :rotfl: First time I’ve seen this advice, and it’s a doozy. Does it apply equally to both men and women?! Do you really claim that it works~sounds more provacative than distracting.

Yes, it actually works to bless your organ on male or female with holy water or holy oil as you would when entering a church to bless yourself. Of course you do this in private. I have tried it and it works both to improve potence as well as to control undesirable urges. Any time you bless yourself or pray in Jesus Holy Name, he will help you no matter what you are praying about providing what you ask is in accord with His Holy Will.
