Yes folks, even Archie Comics has been taken over by the Left. No trailer link since promotion is not my goal.

I have enjoyed the Archie comics under legends such as DeCarlo and Lucey. Still do. Funny, light bedtime or bathroom reading. I still buy the check-out counter digests every so often.

Now this. From the trailers, it’s a dark, teen-angst drama and apparently with some kind of agenda. This is not the Archie I know, and I don’t think I’ll be interested in this series.

I remember how much I enjoyed reading about the adventures of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica growing up in the midwest as a young 11 year old girl. I was just telling myself the other day maybe I should buy an Archie comic book for my 10 year old grandson and expose him to these characters. I guess I will not buy one now.
 
Yeah, when I was growing up in the Midwest, I really enjoyed those comics. They were just fun to read and I liked the art.

It’s amazing to me that Archie is still being published. It was square and old-hat when I was a kid (which was around when the pinball machine was replaced by the arcade video game.)

“Square”? According to who? I read it as a kid and liked all the various Archie comics.

So you would rather have a everything be like it was in the 1940’s? Straight Cis Christian White Males in the forefront of everything? Time have changed and progress moves on.

I get it. I read a lot of Silver Age superhero comics. They were fun and the stories were well done, and well drawn.

Ed, they’ve been going down a ‘different path’ for the last 6 years and more. Gay characters, zombie story arcs, ‘adult’ story arcs where Archie in one universe is married to Veronica, in another to Betty, started out as a cute 6 issue ‘collectible’ where in both they wound up as parents of twins and then Archie wandered back to ‘reality’. . .changed to a much longer series arc with all sorts of craziness, including the death of Ms. Grundy, and finally Archie’s own death saving the life of the latest gay character, Kevin Keller. . .

Then dear little Sabrina, the teen age witch, screwed up everything when Jughead’s dog Hot Dog was accidentally killed by Reggie Mantle, Jughead asked her to ‘bring him back’ and the dog, now a zombie, bit Jughead, who then became a zombie, wound up eating Ethel and everybody in Riverdale was doing a ‘walking dead’, and Archie wound up having to kill his own zombified father. . .

If you have old issues from any time up to the 1980s or so, they’re a lovely slice of real Americana. The 1990s have a lot of ‘repeats’ in the issues but brought up to 90s by mention of things like Ipads and the Internet. Once you get into the 2000s and especially late in the decade, the powers-that-be (apparently there were two distinct camps, and one wanted to be more ‘edgy’ and that group 'won) decided to change Riverdale. Divorce was just the start. Now there isn’t ANYTHING from the modern cultural sewer that they won’t use.

I read Archie comics in the 1960s and early 1970s. The big two comic book companies began a gradual slide downhill starting in the 1970s, and I stopped buying comics in the mid-1980s. Oh, I checked them out from time to time in the store but never bought any except for an oversized Superman book by Alex Ross. The art was very good but the story was lame.

I keep track of the trends in comics as part of my job. I’m not going to roll around in the cultural sewer with them. I’ve stopped buying, watching or listening to a lot of media. The radio in my car stays off. Some company wants me to pay for garbage. No way. They might realize one day that a lot of media are dying because they are marketing trash and filth as “entertainment.” It’s not.

They can keep it.

Probably not, they seem pretty set on pushing this “entertainment”. There’s still too many people who will say “Oh I still watch X but only for Y, I don’t like when they do Z and don’t watch it for that!” As long as Z doesn’t offend to far, they’ll survive.

It’s a CW show, and is produced by the same people who made The Vampire Diaries. When I heard these two facts, I already knew that there will be diversity-both races and sexual orientations. Was kind of annoyed because I loved Archie comics, and I wasn’t feeling the whole angsty vibe. Plus live action Archie is way too good looking, I thought he would be a lot more plain. 🙂 They also made a few character changes…if I’m not wrong. I heard Betty has ADHD, and Jughead wears a hearing aid. But then again, my memory sucks.

I am not sure if Betty and Veronica are together. I did hear from my brother that they kissed in a scene to annoy somebody? Or to show someone something? They are not dating each other or anything, I believe.

I’m not more bothered by homosexual acts on TV than the portrayal of premarital sex etc anymore. They’re all mortal sins that are praised by society to me.

I don’t know if I’ll be watching. I was hoping the series would be a comedy.
 
Returning to some previous version of America would be a backward step. We have never had a great moral nation. Maybe people were more moral, but it came at a cost.

That being said, children do not need to be exposed to gender identity issues. Let them come to that if they have issues or as adults. Leave children as children, protected and pure. Not in a bubble but seeing the world though pure eyes, guided by God!

Let’s rephrase that and see if this doesn’t jolt the feathers of those who loved the old Archie comics.

I surmise it was and is important to a slightly older generation than myself, but my memories of it were of vaguely comical attempts of the ‘too little, too late’ variety to update the comic book to fit modern times, such as adding a black character in 1976 or something along those lines. There’s probably no real way to make Archie fully up-to-date without transforming it into a completely new commodity which is what the television show being discussed here apparently did, whether its creators are aware of that or not. (Kudos to you, by the way, Jharek, for expressing your opinion in a fashion as gentle and diplomatic as mine was blunt and crass.)
 
Superheroes serve some kind of purpose (to fight crime and evil-doers) whereas Archie exists to … graduate from high school?
