I think that’s a very fair and accurate way of putting it. I felt very much that way about it in the late 1970’s. It blows my mind that 40 years later there’s still an audience (and they haven’t exhausted every imaginable plotline).
As an added note, Archie and his group of friends always reminded me a bit of Richie Cunningham and his friends from ‘Happy Days’ (although Archie is much older, having started in 1941 a decade before the real 1950’s began) except Archie was inexplicably appealing to girls whereas Richie wasn’t.
