but not by Papal decree
No one here, myself included, ever suggested that the Bible was determined by Papal Decree - it was write, compiled, preserved, translated and distributed by the Authority of the Catholic Church.
Are you somehow misinformed about the Authority of the Catholic Church thinking that it is somehow limited to Papal Decree? If this is your misunderstanding, I invite you to look deeper into the Catholic Church so you can know what it is you’re disagreeing with. There’s no sense in arguing what you think the Catholic Church teaches - if you must argue, then argue with what the Catholic Church actually teaches.
Third, I said pretty specifically that I wasn’t bound to use the same books you do, but tradition for the Confessional Lutherans is not completely ignored or worthless. For Confessional Lutherans, the Bible is somewhat ignored or considered worthless. That is interesting to know. I’ve learned something new about Confessional Lutheran’s beliefs. Does anyone really doubt whether or not the four gospels are Divine Scripture? Yes, some people do. This post was not addressed to those who do not accept any part of the New Testament as anything other than the Inspired Word of God. Do I need the Pope to be sure of that? Yes, because without the various Popes who called together and presided over the multiple councils which established the Catholic Tradition of accepting the 27 books of the New Testament as Inspired Word of God - why would anyone believe it? What Authority, if not the Catholic Church’s Authority, would someone accept to believe such a thing? Especially considering there was no other Christian Authority around back then 300s to 1500s. The Romanists didn’t until Trent. All Catholics did, not just the Roman Catholics - just because the 27 books of the New Testament was officially declared part of Scripture Canon at Trent doesn’t mean that those books had been part of Church Tradition up until that point - the Council of Rome, the Council of Hippo, and many, many other Catholic Church Councils leading up to Trent had well established that consistent Tradition.
I never said the word “trinity” was found in scripture.
Yes you did. Go back and read your own post if you don’t believe me.
We accept the ecumenical councils NOT because they are inspired and infallible, but because THEY WERE RIGHT.
On what basis do you have any reason to believe that they were right? So Joe Blow reads and agrees, but Suzie Q reads and disagrees - oh, I get it, it’s all a matter of personal interpretation - there is no true Truth. It’s an arbitrary feeling as to what you think/feel is truth.
How do we know they were right you ask…read the Bible it’s fairly self explanatory unless you’re a Unitarian.
You sound like a Mormon - read it and you’ll know it’s true…That’s a silly argument - there has to be some basis for me to believe that it could be true in order for me to read it in the first place.
The first councils were called under authority of the Emperor, under the protection of the Emperor.
You’re right, there were a few times that the Roman Emperor requested the Bishop of Rome to call together Bishops for council.
