Bible - Qur'an Comparison

I made a point last night to read the first part (juz) of the Qur’an, and I noticed something which hadn’t been apparent to me that I think is worthwhile to point out.

In this first juz there are a lot of “stories” about the Jews. Someone mentioned earlier that a person would have to be familiar with the Bible to understand some of these. I still don’t think that is the case because the important bits are included in the Qur’an, enough to derive a lesson without the full detailed history.

But what I found interesting in this passage in particular, which talks about Adam and Moses especially… the phrase used is:

O Children of Israel, remember…

It appears several times. These passages are directed TO the Jews, and the Jews are being told to remember these stories which they have heard before!!

Now mind you that they appear in the Qur’an means that they are lessons for all peoples now, but the fact that it is telling the Children of Israel to REMEMBER is very interesting. So I thought I’d share! 🙂

Secondly you said “youthful pirating of caravans.” I consider that to be a slander against my Prophet, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him. You have provided no evidence of it, nor am I even aware of any half-baked evidence to suggest such a claim… therefore, slander.
Let me address this first. I have no support of this, it’s just a story I heard, a love story actually. It was told to me long long ago (I can’t remember how long, it was that that long ago…) that Muhammad as a youth became caught up with marauding gangs who pirated the caravans coming in and out of Mecca. It was Khadija who was able to turn his heart away from this lifestyle and towards repentance, and they were later to marry. It was also this youthful experience which endowed him with the fighting abilities he was to use later in his battles of conquest. This is just a story I heard, I’ve not read it anywhere, and in no way did I either interpret it as slander or intend it as such. I honestly just thought it was a common story, the story of a repentant sinner turned prophet. I apologize for any offense taken. I withdraw the statement completely, and I apologize.

I’m afraid that my position is not being understood. There were not Jews and Christians living in Mecca is more precisely what I meant. You aren’t talking about a man who has vague knowledge as an outsider to a religion, but one who knows in detail even the most obscure ancient traditions–that in itself is a marvelous feat which could not be accomplished by chatter with caravans in passing. Not to mention that His companions and the Quraysh did NOT have the knowledge which he had about the other religions. It’s not possible for him to acquire such knowledge by himself from Jews and Christians passing through. And yet that is your position.
I really must insist you provide evidence that Jews and Christians were not living in Mecca. It is not my position that Muhammad obtained knowledge of the Christian and Jewish faiths from passers by in the sense you describe… Travel was very slow at this time. People travelling all the way from Morocco or China to trade in Mecca, could not simply turn around and leave the next day. People would reside in Mecca, even if only temporarily, and some would end up staying. Those people brought their faith with them. I’m not trying to give the impression that Jews and Christians were in control of Mecca, nor do I mean to imply Mecca was a Christian or Jewish city. Muhammad refers to them as the “people of the book,” so obviously he knew something about the book they used in their faith, that being the Holy Bible.
There is no evidence at all that excluding Waraqa any Jews or Christians were living in Mecca–not any that I’m aware of. Was it a very diverse religious landscape? Of course it was. You realize that there were 360 idols in the Kaba? Not a handful, but 360. The Quraysh who ruled Mecca tried to derive benefit from the various forms of worship which passed through their town.
My point exactly. The money of the Christians and Jews was just as important to the Quraysh as anyone else’s money.
Not really. There is another monk that we have traditions to verify Muhammad came in contact with–another Christian who was living alone. It was more common for people to live with their families and tribes, I think, than with co-religionists, and the presence of Waraqa as the only Christian in the area is not surprising at all.
Monks often live alone as hermits. A monk is a different story. It’s part of the nature of family to share religion. In the case of Christianity it’s a responsibility to share your religion with your wife and children, and in the case of Judaism, it’s a genetic fact.

Muhammed was trying to convert the Jews and Christians. He would have no need to address Christians and Jews individually as he does in the Qur’an if they were so few in number.
Surah II:
62 Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.
63 And when We took a promise from you and lifted the mountain over you: Take hold of the law (Torah) We have given you with firmness and bear in mind what is in it, so that you may guard (against evil).
Surah V:
82 Certainly you will find the most violent of people in enmity for those who believe (to be) the Jews and those who are polytheists, and you will certainly find the nearest in friendship to those who believe (to be) those who say: We are Christians: this is because there are priests and monks among them and because they do not behave proudly.
Surah VII:
157 Those who follow the Apostle-Prophet, the unlettered, whom they find written down with them in the Torah and the Gospel, (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful to them the good things and makes unlawful to them impure things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles which were upon them; so (as for ) those who believe in him and help him and follow the light which has been sent down with him, these it is that are the successful.
Surah LVII:
26 And certainly We sent Nuh and Ibrahim and We gave to their offspring the (gift of) prophecy and the Book: so there are among them those who go aright, and most of them are transgressors.
27 Then We made Our apostles to follow in their footsteps, and We sent Isa son of Marium afterwards, and We gave him the Injeel; and We put in the hearts of those who followed him kindness and mercy; and (as for) monkery, they innovated it – We did not prescribe it to them – only to seek Allah’s pleasure, but they did not observe it with its due observance; so We gave to those of them who believe their reward, and most of them are transgressors.
Not only did Muhammad know of the Holy Bible, he refers to sections of it in the Qur’an, he mentions both the Torah and the Gospel. Surely you can agree this is adequate evidence of not only the presence of Jews and Christians, but also that Muhammad and the early Muslims were exposed to the Holy Bible.

Now mind you that they appear in the Qur’an means that they are lessons for all peoples now, but the fact that it is telling the Children of Israel to REMEMBER is very interesting. So I thought I’d share! 🙂
Saint Paul tells us in Romans 11:11 “Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous.”

As Christians we believe the denial of Jesus by the Jews opened salvation to include all peoples, not just the Jews. We pray for all to be united in Christ and share this salvation. Saint Paul hoped he would inspire the Jews to convert once they saw the Gospel being lived (that’s what he means by “make them jealous”).

OTC, e.g., Mohammad obviously took the Gnostic belief that someone else was crucified in Jesus’ place and adapted it for a purpose that was very different from the ancient Gnostic objective. He adopted the Gnostic legend because he did not understand the victory of the Cross, and he essentially wanted to “save” Jesus Who, for Mohammad, was just a man. He just took the essential Gnostic argument (cited by St. Irenaeus as early as A.D. 180 in his famous work “Against the Heresies.”) and turned it around.

He (and, more importantly, his theological associates - the ones who really wrote the Koran) were almost certainly Gnostic Christians, or deeply influenced by Gnostic Christianity. This is quite apparent if one does not accept the Muslim myth that the content of the Koran comes directly from Mohammad via Divine revelation. Whoever really wrote the Koran, clearly had a comprehensive understanding of the Gospels and the Hebrew Scriptures, and held to an “alternative reading” (i.e., a Gnostic reading) of them.

Mohammad clearly had Christian associates (even Muslims confess this), and their caravan business - as “Bee” has already addressed - took them into Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and maybe even Anatolia, where they would have been exposed to both Christian and Jewish societies. Islam is based upon this.

From a pro-Muslim website:

“From a young age [Mohammad] enjoyed having challenging conversations with priests and monks and other holy men. For the next 13 years or so Mohammad traveled all over the desert from Yemen to Damascus and Bostra. Over these years Mohammad earned the reputation of being a fair and honest trader and a skilled camel driver.” (angelfire.com/ca/beekeeper/Islam.html)

Like Joseph Smith (the founder of the Mormons) centuries later, Mohammad was a self-appointed “reformer” of what we might call the “monotheistic faith” (the Faith of Abraham). Like Smith, who decided that the Church of Jesus Christ had been “taken from the earth” because of all the competing Christian sects (Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, etc.), Mohammad (coming from the perspective of a semi-pagan Arab) saw the belief in Allah (the “one God” of Arabic mythology; the equivalent of the Hebrew “Yahweh” and the Canaanite “El”) divided and disputed among various Jewish sects and various Christian sects (e.g. the Catholics/Orthodox, Nestorians, Monophysites, Monothelites, lingering Arians, and a variety of Gnostic cults, some of which existed within the bigger “orthodox” Churches).

Unable to see one, “orthodox” continuity among these competing “sects” (i.e., as a Semite, he certainly would not have been comfortable with the Catholic/Orthodox Church because it was dominated by non-Mid-Eastern Greco-Romans - for Abraham had been a Semite, and the Greco-Romans belonged to an alien culture), Mohammad decided that all of these sects must be wrong; and so he set out to re-construct the “pure” faith of Abraham, incorporating all of the “best parts” of Judaism and Christianity, as he and his associates saw fit.

My information about Noah and his sons came from this thread

While we are at it, the Bible records no one from the Ark being lost in the flood. The number of humans on it is fixed at 8. Again, why the difference?

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

Truth stands out clear from Error.
Thats a false assertion. The greatest errors are those with some elements of truth in it. Correct? Thats why there are many lost people in the world. Truths are like needles in a haystack.

Some of the verses abrogated by the verse of the Sword:

  3. “But because of their breach of their Covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the Message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them – barring a few – ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth those who are kind” (Surah 5:13).
  4. “Leave alone those who take their religion to be mere play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world. But proclaim (to them) this (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own acts: it will find for itself no protector or intercessor except Allah: if it offered every ransom, (or reparation), none will be accepted: such is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own acts: they will have for drink (only) boiling water, and for punishment, one most grievous: for they persisted in rejecting Allah” (Surah 6:70).
  5. “But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah” (Surah 8:61)
  6. “And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury); but say, ‘We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; our God and your God is One; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)” (Surah 29:46).
  7. “And remember We took a covenant from the Children of Israel (to this effect): worship none but Allah” (Surah 2:83).

If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, thy duty is to convey the Message” (Surah 3:20).
  13. “Let not the Believers take for friends or helpers unbelievers rather than believers; if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may guard yourself from them” (Surah 3:28).

  18. “Except those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty (of peace), or those who approach you with hearts restraining them from fighting you as well as fighting their own people. If Allah had pleased, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you: therefore, if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (guarantees of ) peace, then Allah hath opened no way for you (to war against them)” (Surah 4:90).
  19. “O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the Symbols of Allah, nor of the Sacred Month” (Surah 5:2).

Well first of all i didn’t write my post to you i write it for other Non-Muslim. And as a Muslim brother i would like you to respect others religion and Great Prophet book. Instead of arguing about silly thread. You are the one who insist me to write about this thread. Which i donot like to discuss about. So Try to spend time praying five times and do zikr of Allah alot. I donot know if you are married or single. But talking to other guyz specially male didnot suit for one Muslim women. Whether she is married or not.Hope you understands. May Allah Guide Us To The Right Path.
Firstly…the lady isn’t talking to anyone, male or female. Talking is done with a voice and normally is done in person, at least in the beginning. Your admonition is a perfect example of the Islamic culture and why this lady should get out of it ASAP. The Arab supremacy and male controller aspects of this culture are only a couple of the negative aspects and not the least negative I must add. I am betting she is in love with a muslim and doing her best to make it work by clinging to his faith and trying to make it over into something beautiful in her own mind. I am not Dear Abbey but I can see a train wreck coming. 🤷

Since most of the friends are at present discussing abrogation in Quran. May I inform that there is no abrogation of any verse of the quran. In this matter, I may have to face some opposition from the Muslim members too. But I am ready to deal with any one from any faith about this abrogation matter. There is no verse abroagted in the Quran. It is a false idea.

If any one has doubt then he/she may bring just one verse which they feel is abrogated by the other one (quoting both verses please).

Because Zulu is involved here. May I admit that there are many misconceptions in the muslim minds and I may summarise just a few of them here: And if any one has honestly left Islam after accepting it then be sure that there is no punishment for that, or there should be no punishment for that. That is Islam.
  1. The penulty for apostates is death.
  2. The adulterer will be stoned to death.
  3. Some verses of the Quran are abrogated by other verses.
  4. Only the Muslims will go to heavens.
  5. None of the jews and the christians, even though doing good work, and being very peaceful, will have any benefit in this life or the next life.
  6. All those who have not recited (uttered) the Kalimah are kaafirs.
I am sorry, I cannot go on now. But if I remember any more, i will post it here later. All of the above six items mentioned are wrong beliefs of the Muslims and they are against the real teachings of Islam. God Bless the right believers.**

What kind of Muslim are you? Shia? Sunni? 19er? Quran-only?

This is soooooooo sad.

Vickie, I’m blaming you for taking the entire thread off-topic with your long post that was nothing other than a copy and paste from another one of your brainwashing bookmarks!!

This thread initiated a discussion on page 1. It wasn’t about compulsion in religion, apostates or any other bogus nonsense which is being addressed ad nauseum elsewhere ont his site!

Henceforth anyone participating should refer to the first two pages, and if your response is not related, DON’T POST IT!

I guess I should say thanks for sticking up for me but since you had to end with an insult maybe that’s not the best thing to do.

Not all Muslims understand their religion. Some don’t understand English either. Some think they have the right somehow to talk down to women. But not just Muslims think that–it’s a trait which seems to be inherent in men.

I have been a Muslim for YEARS, I converted without the pressure of a boyfriend/fiance/husband, but solely on my own initiative. It’s only in the last few months have I been engaged.

I do love my religion, and do believe it to be supremely beautiful–without having to make it over at all. I’m only trying to show you all how beautiful it is too–since what you are seeing is not Islam in the first place.

Sister Amy,

I ama little confused by your response. Are you saying that the Koran is correct and the Bible is not, or are you saying something else? We see that Noah got on the boat with three sons and got off the boat with three sons in the Bible.

These are the things that confuse me about the Koran. Assuming that Christianity got off base and Islam is the correction, why are the early books not the same?

As a Muslim, of course I believe that the Qur’an is correct. What I was saying though was that God Almighty knows the answer, He sees and hears all things. If God revealed and preserved the Qur’an (as Muslims believe) then it would be correct.
These are the things that confuse me about the Koran. Assuming that Christianity got off base and Islam is the correction, why are the early books not the same?
Early books? Recalls that Muslims believe that Judaism is also “off base.” The Qur’an says it confirms and corrects what came before it, and passes over what was unnecessary. It talks about Jewish scribes changing words from their proper places.

There are any number of reasons that mistakes could have crept into the Bible. From an ancient Jewish scribe, mind you–so long ago that the mistake might have gone unnoticed. And Muslims believe that while revelation was sent before the Qur’an, it wasn’t preserved. So why the differences?

The answer is that God knows what happened. How many sons of Noah went on the ark, for example. There is an important lesson in that story–that even Noah’s son, though Noah wanted him to be on the ark, with the believer, he wasn’t a believer. And God tells Noah that his son is not of his family because of his disbelief. It teaches a number of things, like a person isn’t righteous because of family ties, that sometimes a person’s son will reject the true religion and that it is an enormity for that to happen, but that we need to trust God anyway.

If what we’re seeing is not the real Islam, what is it??? The Quran has about 164 verses promoting violence against unbelievers and those are used by Muslims to justify evil actions against others. Where is the beauty in that??

The real Islam is that of the terrorists since they’re the ones that are practicing it the way Muhammad intended! There is no equality in Islam, unbelievers are always considered inferior to Muslims and all the peaceful verses were abrogated but Muslims keep bringing them up as proof of the “peaceful” aspect of Islam.

If I said that Hitler and the SS were my heroes and that Nazism is beautiful, what kind of person would I be???
