Bible study turns to Catholic bashing

I went to my churches Bible study last week like I always do, and my church has members which are not friendly to Catholic doctine. (Wesleyan Church) A member of the study asked a question about praying to saints and Mary and it started a Catholic bashing session. I agree with the Catholic church and her teachings. Why I am not Catholic is a long story, but suffice it to say I was boiling inside and my wife even commented to the other members how upset I was getting but it made no difference. The pastor was even calling the tradition of praying to the saints “silly” and it is not a true doctrine. It greatly saddens me to see such things happen. I will NEVER go back to the Bible study, even though I am a member of the church. I went to my RCIA class two days later and it was so refreshing to hear the Father say that all Christian viewpoints will be respected and nobody will be called on the carpet because they are not Catholic. I just had to vent because it was greatly upsetting. How refreshing to go to RCIA and have thoughful, respectful conversations!

But if you agree with the Catholic church and it’s teachings, then aren’t you in heresy being something else? If you truly believe the Catholic church was founded by Christ, why aren’t you in it?🤷

I agree with this.

T, if you can’t receive the Sacraments for some reason, just come to Mass and be part of a parish community. It sounds like you are already involved with a parish, and going to RCIA - that’s a great start! 👍
 
Wow, I’m sorry this happened.

I have no idea what Wesleyan is, but how is it possible to be Catholic and not, you know, Catholic?😉

as poster says, he has is reasons, and he is clearly far along on his way, so why this slam? uncalled for remark and calls for education on the term"heretic". No a person who has not yet studied and accepted all Catholic doctrine is not a heretic, he is just a person who has yet to study and accept Catholic doctrine. A member of another Christian denomination who is participating in RCAI with a view to understanding and accepting Catholic doctrine is a candidate, and already a member of the parish and Catholic community, albeit not yet formally in full communion.
 
That was one of the (many) things that appealed to me about Catholicism. No Protestant bashing allowed - they are our brothers and sisters in Christ and deserve to be respected. If Protestants are mentioned at all in a homily, it is in admiration of their zealous evangelism or Bible memorization, and is usually followed up with an exhortation to take a proverbial leaf outta their notebook.

**Excuse me, but where do you see a slam here?? If you know the teachings of the Catholic church are the CORRECT teachings, and you believe everything that the Catholic church teaches, yet you are another religion, you are committing a sin against Jesus Christ whether you like it or not. You are a heretic just like Luther who WAS A CATHOLIC MONK, BELIEVED EVERYTHING CATHOLIC, YET CHOSE TO BELIEVE SOMETHING ELSE. **
Furthermore, he is not going to RCIA to BECOME Catholic, but goes to dialect with Catholics. Big difference.

It’s a Protestant thing: I didn’t think of becoming Orthodox until someone pointed out that I agreed with the Orthodox and not the Lutherans.

I quit a Bible-study at work for the same reason. Within five minutes of my first session, I realized it was a Fundie setting, and freaked everyone out when I defended the Church when it came under attack. :yup:

please read up on what real heresy consists of, read up on RCIA, and read up on what “no salvation outside the Church” really means. You are misinformed

It is precisely because the OP is not a heretic that he needs to seek full communion with the Church - he adheres his membership to an organization that he does not agree with, while assenting in full to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

He needs to jump the fence.

I wish I could say this is not common. I cannot. there are as many reasons as there are denominations and people in them.

Just keep moving on your journey and God will lead you home.

Let me answer one question since there are some who do not understand my position. I am not yet Catholic due to family issues and the problems it would cause problems with my children
and wife. For those of you who think that is a simple solution, you have no idea how hard it is. I go to RCIA not just to converse, but to one day become Catholic so please do not think I go just to converse. I will jump the fence one day, but will do so when God helps my family to understand.

Wesleyan is very, very similiar to United Methodist, and believe me it is difficult to be Catholic in theology and not yet in full communion. It is a stressful thing!
