**There is a vast difference between the salvation for the lost, and the doctrine of rewards for believers. **
**Salvation is a gift **(Eph.2:8-9)Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–
Eph 2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast. ,not of works.
**Rewards are according to the works of the believer, any believer on either side of the; pulpit or podium.
(Matt.16:27)Mat 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.
.
Every believer will be rewarded according to his own labor **(1 Cor.3:8-15) *vs 8.1Cr 3:8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.
1Cr 3:9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
1Cr 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. **But each one should be careful how he builds. **1Cr 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1Cr 3:12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
1Cr 3:13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.
1Cr 3:14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
1Cr 3:15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames
The believer has two types of building materials 1) eternal or temporal, vs.12^ ;( 2 Cor.4:18)>
2Cr 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
. Only the believer building on eternal materials will receive a reward. The “wood, hay, straw” works will be destroyed at the “Judgment Seat of Christ” 2 Cor .5; 10. 2Cr 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

**Some believers Will be ashamed at the Judgment Seat of Christ. **1 Jn.2;28 1Jo 2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
. Some will be saved, but with few works of value to the Lord 1 Cor.3;15. 1Cr 3:15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

*and…
FIRST Crown, The Crown of Life James1;12
Jam 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
…Secondly, The Crown Imperishable, 1 Cor. 9;24-27
1Cr 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
1Cr 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
1Cr 9:26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.
1Cr 9:27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
Thirdly, The Crown of Rejoicing, 1 Thess.2;19-20,
1Th 2:19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
1Th 2:20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy
** Fourthly, The Crown of Righteousness
, 2Tim. 4:5-8,
2Ti 4:5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.
2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2Ti 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Fifthly, The Crown of Glory, 1 Peter 5:2-5.
1Pe 5:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers–not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;
1Pe 5:3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
1Pe 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
1Pe 5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ,“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

This is a challenge for all of us as believers to give our lives to the Lord as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2),
Rom 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual* act of worship.
Rom 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

not living for what we want, but what God wants.

Very good Simon. Too bad any minute now someone will say…

“but the Pope says…”

**There is a vast difference between the salvation for the lost, and the doctrine of rewards for believers. **

**(**Matt.16:27)Mat 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.
I think this passage is clearly talking about salvation vs. damnation. vv. 25-26 speak of saving or losing your life/soul, and v. 27 is clearly linked to this: "For the Son of man. . . " I don’t see how you can avoid the conclusion that the “rendering unto every man” is an implicit threat of the “losing one’s life/soul” mentioned in the preceding verses.

This illustrates the dangers of prooftexting. Simply by listing this passage together with some passages from Paul talking about rewards (in at least one clase clearly distinguished from salvation), you make an implicit argument that that’s how the Matthew passage is to be read. But shouldn’t the first place to look for an interpretation of Matt. 16:27 be Matt. 16:25-26?

And then there’s the very similar passage in Matt. 25:31: "And when the Son of Man will come in his glory and all the angels with him. . . . " which clearly speaks of eternal life or death on the basis of one’s actions, specifically how one has treated the poor and needy.

Romans 2:6-7

6God “will give to each person according to what he has done.” 7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life

Matthew 25:31-46

**31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34"Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37"Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40"The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41"Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44"They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45"He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."**

Interesting, because when the Bible shows God rendering according to each man’s work, what he gives to those who do good is eternal life and those who do evil eternal damnation. There is no talk of crowns or any other kind of reward.

michael

You guys fail to recognize that a Christian WILL persevere. A Christian WILL do good works. Works come after. If you think you can do works in order to GET saved, may I humbly suggest you repent and get saved. God bless.

All those ordained to eternal glory will persevere. Those ordained to grace will not. This still does not mean that God does not incoporate free will and good works in accomplishing the final salvation of the elect. Salvation is God’s intiative, but we must all cooperate with His grace.

More accurately, “The Church has always taught as passed down from Jesus and the Apostles, and as would be simply reaffirmed by the Pope…”

Carry on…😃

So far the only things you have pointed out is that works are judged. We as members of Holy Mother Church know that and teach that every day.

Some of the words differ. Some of the meaning is slightly off in what you wrote. What version of the Bible do you use?

You guys fail to recognize that a Christian WILL persevere. A Christian WILL do good works. Works come after. If you think you can do works in order to GET saved, may I humbly suggest you repent and get saved. God bless.
In other words, when Scripture doesn’t support your view, assume you’re right anyway and exhort us all to repent! Sorry, that doesn’t cut any ice.

Besides, we aren’t talking about how we “get saved.” We are talking about the basis for judgment. I do not believe that we “get saved” (i.e., initially receive the grace of God) through good works. I don’t believe the Catholic Church teaches this either, but check with the Catholics on this board.

However, I do believe, as Scripture teaches, that we are *judged *by our works. This actually matches what you said above–we are saved by faith, but true faith will produce works which can be judged.

In Christ,

Edwin

I value your opinion always and do understand what your saying; my tendency is to look at 25-26 seperate from 27-28.
Why?
comparatively I tend to hold it up to Rev 22:12.
And given the context of that passage, I think it’s clearly talking about salvation as well. Are you suggesting that those who are “unjust” or “filthy” in v. 11 are among the saved? More to the point, don’t vv. 14-15 clearly say that those who do Christ’s commandments are saved and those who live ungodly lives and love falsehood are excluded from the City of God?
I’ve read theologians on both sides though.
I’m sure you have, and I’d be interested in hearing just what theologians you have in mind. But in the end what matters is which theologians are interpreting Scripture correctly in its proper context.

If you want to admit that you are adhering to Sacred Baptist Tradition, that’s fine. Discussing the roots and foundations of this particular tradition of Christianity is a matter for another thread. But so far I can’t see that your exegesis is justified simply on the grounds of the immediate context of the passages you’re citing (from the Gospels and Revelation–Paul certainly does speak of a judgment of believers that does not affect one’s salvation).

I don’t mean to be rude here–I appreciate your courtesy in this discussion. But I really believe your views are unscriptural here.

In Christ,

Edwin

Hi myfavoritemartin! Regarding the “crown of rejoicing”, that is a metaphor Paul uses to describe the Thessalonians, not an actual crown. Concerning the passage from James, the crown is promised to those who love God, not to those who perform superlatively. Likewise, the kingdom is promised to those who love God:

James 2:5
Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

Therefore, the crown is not a seaparate reward, but an integral and inseparable aspect of inheriting the kingdom. Reception of the crown is simply a confirmation that one has entered the eternal kingdom. Like the reecption of the diploma at graduation.

The crown of righteousness is the same as the crown of life, just two names for the same thing. Like the crown of life, it is promised to ALL who long for His appearing. Every genuine Christian longs for His appearing, so it is promised to all Christians. The crown of glory is another name for the same crown. Otherwise, you’ll need three heads. What will happen in the case of an elder who has persevered in trial and longs for his appearing? He’ll get three crowns?

God Bless,
Michael

Do you guys disagree these verses are showing salvation in present tense? Oops I forrgot where I was of course you don’t.😉

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3:36).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” (John 5:24).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47).

“Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace” (2 Tim. 1:9).

“And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace” (Luke 7:50).

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5).

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (I John 5: 11).
