Dear Bishopite,
“By the living God I put you under oath to tell us whether you are the Christ the Son of God!” 64 Jesus said to him: “You yourself said [it].
They asked Jesus if he’s the “Son of God”. He says: “Your yourself said it.”

This is pretty simple… Are you the “Son of God”?

They didn’t ask: “Are you God?”

Just: “Are You the Son of God”.

Is there anyone here that can intelligently distingusih between being the Son of God and being God?

Dear Bishopite,

You quote John 10:31-39.

There is no doubt the Jews were thinking that Jesus was making himself God… But is this correct? They also thought he was making himself a drunk, a glutton, demonic, from Satan, etc.

Look closely:

(John 10:31-39) Once more the Jews lifted up stones to stone him. 32Jesus replied to them: “I displayed to YOU many fine works from the Father. For which of those works are YOU stoning me?” 33The Jews answered him: “*We are stoning you, not for a fine work, but for blasphemy, even because you, although being a man, make yourself a god.” 34Jesus answered them: “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said: “YOU are gods”’? 35If he called ‘gods’ those against whom the word of God came, and yet the Scripture cannot be nullified, 36do YOU say to me whom the Father sanctified and dispatched into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, I am God’s Son?** 37If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believe me. 38But if I am doing them, even though YOU do not believe me, believe the works, in order that YOU may come to know and may continue knowing that the Father is in union with me and I am in union with the Father.” 39*Therefore they tried again to seize him; but he got out of their reach.

Although they were all upset thinking he was saying he was “God”, he clarified he was only saying he was the “Son of God”.

Will you believe Jesus, or will you align your opinion with that of these hysterical Jews?

One comment.

I have yet to see Biblical proof that Jesus is not God the Son.

The only thing I have seen brought to the table is Scriptures where Jesus claims to be the Son of God.

Now think a minute. Just because Jesus claims to be the Son of God does not mean that He is not also God the Son.

Sorry BibleSteve, you have to get me to do better than this in order to convince me to believe the words of an upstart sect 100 years or so old in age (that has been obviously wrong in prophesying the date of the Lord’s return btw) over the witness of Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christians since the time of Christ.

Dear Mozart,

I am simply using Scripture to argue **my **point. I’m not discussing the pro’s or con’s of any religion. This thread is about “Biblical Proof Texts of the Trinity”

The Scriptures do not teach the Trinity doctrine. It is Scripture that reveals that Jesus is as distinct and different from YHWH as Isaac was from Abraham, that a woman is from her husband…

It is Scripture that reveals that YHWH is the Most High God and Jesus is his son.

It is Scripture that reveals that Jesus views his Father, YHWH as the “only true God”.

(1 Corinthians 11:3) But I want YOU to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God.

(John 17:3) This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.

(Revelation 3:12) “‘The one that conquers—I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will by no means go out [from it] anymore, and I will write upon him the name of **my God **and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem which descends out of heaven from my God, and that new name of mine.

(Psalm 110:1-3) The utterance of YHWH to my Lord is: “Sit at my right hand Until I place your enemies as a stool for your feet.” 2The rod of your strength YHWH will send out of Zion, [saying:] “Go subduing in the midst of your enemies.” 3Your people will offer themselves willingly on the day of your military force. In the splendors of holiness, from the womb of the dawn, You have your company of young men just like dewdrops.

(Acts 3:13) The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his Servant, Jesus, whom YOU, for YOUR part, delivered up and disowned before Pilate’s face, when he had decided to release him.

(Psalm 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is YHWH, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

(Luke 1:31-32) and, look! you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you are to call his name Jesus. 32 This one will be great and will be called Son of the Most High

I’ve seen these types of threads for quite a while now, and they dont get very far, it just leads to resentment.

Seriously, why don’t we address one scripture at a time. I personally think that would be much better than just constantly throwing scripture verses in the ring. If we are not careful we can tend to misuse the scriptures of God which does not benefit anyone.

BibleSteve, I notice you don’t tend to do this, until your last post. Also I notice you only argue the scripture verses you know well. But fellow Catholics, on this thread anyway you have been just throwing out threads at BibleSteve and we know that it only makes him more stubborn in proving you wrong.

Start on one or two scriptures at a time, then again this is not my thread.

In regards to
John 17:3) This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.
I don’t think this neccessarily rules out Jesus being part of the true God, but I can see how it does seem to distinguish the Son from God. Does anyone know what Jesus was intending when Jesus said “the only tue God”? I mean why didn’t Jesus say “…to know us the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”

Anyway, Jesus referring to God and then to himself doesn’t mean Jesus is not also God. It is like a man introducing himself and saying “I’m a father and the chief of police”. Do you understand me?

Acts 10:42 (New King James Version)

42 And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.

Jesus isn’t judged by God, Jesus is ordained to be judge.

We know that the Jesus not only claimed to be God and IS God because NO early church Christian leader ever claimed otherwise; you as I said earlier follow a form of Arianism which was condemned by the Council of Nicea 325 AD.
You put emphasis on what YOU think is supposed to be stressed within the verse but again this is specifically against historical Christian orthodox teaching.

Steve,

Jesus is those verses putting emphasis on His personhood, that He is a “person” within the Godhead. But those verses do NOT contradict Him being also God. It’s the watchtower’s faulty exegesis that is the problem. It is NOT historical nor scriptural but derived from a theological novum of the 19th century.

Steve,

The term “Son of God” means to be of the same nature as God–of the same substance as the Council of Nicea 325 AD explained by using the word Greek word “homoousios” to describe Jesus Christ as the “same substance of God”. The “Son of God” is “of God.” The claim to be of the same nature as God, is to in fact claim to "be God,” This was blasphemy to the Jewish leaders; therefore, they demanded Jesus’ death. Hebrews 1:3 expresses this very clearly, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being…”

Can You Trust the New World Translation?
The New World Translation (NWT), the JWs’ own Bible version, was created between 1950-61 in several parts, beginning with New Testament (NT). The translation was made by an “anonymous” committee, which transliterated and altered passages that were problematic for earlier JWs. Nathan Knorr, Fred Franz, Albert Schroeder, George Gangas, and Milton Henschel were later identified as the men that created the text, which is used by no other sect. Franz studied non-biblical Greek for two years, and taught himself Hebrew. The rest had no formal training in any biblical language. The text of the NWT is more of a transliteration to fit theological presumptions than it is a true translation. This can be seen in key verses that the WTS changed in order to fit its doctrines.
To undermine the divinity of Christ in John 1:1, the NWT reads, " . . . the word was a god." Non-JW Greek scholars call this “a shocking mistranslation,” “incorrect,” “monstrous,” and “evidence of abysmal ignorance of the basic tenets of Greek grammar.” Furthermore, Col. 1:15-17 has been changed to “… by means of him all [other] things were created.” If the text were left as the original Greek reads, it would clearly state that Jesus created all things. However, the WTS cannot afford to say that anyone but Jehovah created all things, so it inserted the word “other” four times into the text.
The 1950, 1961, and 1970 editions of the NWT said that Jesus was to be worshipped (Heb. 1:6), but the WTS changed the NWT so that later editions would support its doctrines. The translators now decided to render the Greek word for “worship” (proskuneo) as “do obeisance” every time it is applied to Jesus, but as “worship” when modifying Jehovah. If the translators were consistent, then Jesus would be given the worship due to God in Matthew. 14:33, 28:9, 28:17, Luke 24:52, John 9:38, and Hebrews 1:6.
At the time of the Last Supper, there were over three dozen Aramaic words to say “this means,” “represents,” or “signifies,” but Jesus used none of them in his statement, “This is my body.” Since the WTS denies the Catholic teaching on the Eucharist, they have taken the liberty to change our Lord’s words to “This means my body” in Matthew 26:26.
The NWT also translates the Greek word kurios (“Lord”) as “Jehovah” dozens of times in the NT, despite the fact that the word “Jehovah” is never used by any NT author. It should also be asked why the NWT does not translate kurios as “Jehovah” in Romans 10:9, 1 Corinthians 12:3, Philippians 2:11, 2 Thessalonians 2:1, and Revelation 22:21. If it did translate kyrios consistently, then Jesus would be Jehovah!

Homoousios mean “of like substance”, so could you explain how the term “Son of God” means that?

Biblesteve:

As others have said, you are merely presenting verses that differentiate Christ from his Father as a person in the Godhead. I don’t think any of us would tell you we believe the Father and Son to be the same person.

These verses you present are the reasons the Trinity doctrine exists!

The proof for your side of this argument is at best, poor and entirely speculative on the fact that the Son of God cannot BE God. Speculative, because you can’t present a verse supporting your claim that it is either/or.

and also, have you read any of the verses supporting Christ being God that we have presented, or just passed by them and pressed on with your speculative interpretations?

This only a few of the mounds of citations that show the early church Christian leaders all accepted Jesus as true God from true God.

“Our teacher of these things is Jesus Christ, who also was born for this purpose, and was crucified under Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea, in the times of Tiberius Caesar; and that we reasonably worship Him, having learned that He is the Son of the true God Himself, and holding Him in the second place, and the prophetic Spirit in the third, we will prove.” Justin Martyr, First Apology, 13 (A.D. 155).

“[T]he ever-truthful God, hast fore-ordained, hast revealed beforehand to me, and now hast fulfilled. Wherefore also I praise Thee for all things, I bless Thee, I glorify Thee, along with the everlasting and heavenly Jesus Christ, Thy beloved Son, with whom, to Thee, and the Holy Ghost, be glory both now and to all coming ages. Amen.” *Martyrdom of Polycarp 14 (A.D. 157). *

“For God did not stand in need of these [beings], in order to the accomplishing of what He had Himself determined with Himself beforehand should be done, as if He did not possess His own hands. For with Him were always present the Word and Wisdom, the Son and the Spirit, by whom and in whom, freely and spontaneously, He made all things, to whom also He speaks, saying, **‘Let Us make man after Our image and likeness;’ **He taking from Himself the substance of the creatures [formed], and the pattern of things made, and the type of all the adornments in the world.” *Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 4,20:1 (A.D. 180). *

“Our image” is a Hebraic reference to the Godhead, ergo the Trinity.

“And first, they taught us with one consent that God made all things out of nothing; for nothing was coequal with God: but He being His own place, and wanting nothing, and existing before the ages, willed to make man by whom He might be known; for him, therefore, He prepared the world. For he that is created is also needy; but he that is uncreated stands in need of nothing. God, then, having His own Word internal within His own bowels, begat Him, emitting Him along with His own wisdom before all things. He had this Word as a helper in the things that were created by Him, and by Him He made all things. He is called governing principle’ (arche), because He rules, and is Lord of all things fashioned by Him. He, then, being Spirit of God, and governing principle, and wisdom, and power of the highest, came down upon the prophets, and through them spoke of the creation of the world and of all other things. For the prophets were not when the world came into existence, but the wisdom of God which was in Him, and His holy Word which was always present with Him. Wherefore He speaks thus by the prophet Solomon: When He prepared the heavens I was there, and when He appointed the foundations of the earth I was by Him as one brought up with Him.’ And Moses, who lived many years before Solomon, or, rather, the Word of God by him as by an instrument, says, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.’” *Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus, II:10 (c. A.D. 181). *

“In the course of time, then, the Father forsooth was born, and the Father suffered, God Himself, the Lord Almighty, whom in their preaching they declare to be Jesus Christ. We, however, as we indeed always have done and more especially since we have been better instructed by the Paraclete, who leads men indeed into all truth), believe that there is one only God, but under the following dispensation, or oikonomia, as it is called, that this one only God has also a Son, His Word, who proceeded from Himself, by whom all things were made, and without whom nothing was made. Him we believe to have been sent by the Father into the Virgin, and to have been born of her–being both Man and God, the Son of Man and the Son of God, and to have been called by the name of Jesus Christ; we believe Him to have suffered, died, and been buried, according to the Scriptures, and, after He had been raised again by the Father and taken back to heaven, to be sitting at the right hand of the Father, and that He will come to judge the quick and the dead; who sent also from heaven from the Father, according to His own promise, the Holy Ghost, the Paraclete, the sanctifier of the faith of those who believe in the Father, and in the Son, and in the Holy Ghost. That this rule of faith has come down to us from the beginning of the gospel, even before any of the older heretics, much more before Praxeas, a pretender of yesterday, will be apparent both from the lateness of date which marks all heresies, and also from the absolutely novel character of our new-fangled Praxeas.” *Tertullian, Against Praxeas, 2 (post A.D. 213). *

Homoousios mean “of like substance”, so could you explain how the term “Son of God” means that?
Homoousios literally mean “of the same substance”
which is speaking of the “being” of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; three persons with the same “substance” of “being.”

Why don’t or can’t you explain why there is abosulely NO evidence for the watchtower position within the early church? (save Arius a heretic) Nor is there any evidence of JW teaching from any other time up until 19th century. Actually later since the New World Translation changed it’s Bible text in Heb 1:6 just thirty or so years ago!

Jesus Christ is Worshiped
Rev. 4:9-11; 5:8,12-14; 7:11-12 - both Jesus and the Father are worshiped. The Greek word for worship is “proskuneo” which always means the worship of God.

Matt. 2:2,11 - the magi who came to see the newborn Jesus came to worship Him.
Matt. 8:2 - a leper came to Jesus and worshiped Him without rebuke.
Matt. 14:33 - the apostles who were in the boat worshiped Jesus without rebuke.
Matt. 28:9 - Jesus’ disciples took His feet and worshiped Him without rebuke.
Matt. 28:17 - Jesus’ disciples saw Him and then worshiped Him.
Mark 5:6 - the man with the unclean spirit ran to Jesus and worshiped Him.
Luke 1:11 - Mary accepts Elizabeth’s declaration “the Mother of my Lord” = the Mother of my God (Elizabeth used the word “Adonai” which means “Lord God”).
Luke 24:52 - as Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles worshiped Him.
John 9:38 - the blind man who was cured by Jesus worshiped Him. John 20:28 - Jesus accepts Thomas’ statement “My Lord and my God!” Literally, “the Lord of me and the God of me!” (in Greek, “Ho Kurios mou kai ho Theos mou”).

scripturecatholic.com/jesus_christ_divinity.html

There is a plethora of evidence in scripture and Tradition (what the early church fathers wrote and what they believed and handed down) about Jesus being equal to “of the same substance” of God the Father and the Holy Spirit also being God.

Dear Bishopite,

You quote John 10:31-39.

There is no doubt the Jews were thinking that Jesus was making himself God… But is this correct? They also thought he was making himself a drunk, a glutton, demonic, from Satan, etc.
I’ve shown in a number of posts and I could show many many more, where Jesus is God, has always been known to be God and I’ve shown in other scripture passages where Jesus is shown to be God because He IS God.

The scriptures do NOT have anywhere close to the same amount of evidence of Jesus being a drunk, a glutton, demonic, from Satan. Those are in isolated verses where Jesus is falsely accused by the Jews. Look at the mounds of evidence for Jesus’ divnity. If there were whole host of passages that said Jesus was something other than God then your statement would be reasonable, but there aren’t with Scripture nor Tradition.
To try to equate metaphorically Jesus being God and Jesus being a drunk, demonic, or Satan is abolutely nuts!:whacky:

Manny,

Before you continue to just cut and paste and dump a bunch of references, take the time to study both sides of the Trinity argument. Then, you will become a far more persuasive proponent of whatever you choos to believe.

Each and everyone of these scriptures is easily explained by non-Trinitarians.

Be a good student, listen, learn, question, and test.
I did cut and paste to show you a short version of what is already believed. Second, I hardly think your interpretation is consistent with the 2,000 yrs of Christianity. I also find your Bible which you use for reference contains error by rewording the Gospel of John’s first Chapter.

Manny,

For example, before you make a big claim about Jesus being “worshipped”, take the time to study the greek word “proskuneo”… the word used for what various people we doing to Jesus.

Check it out… do your research…

If you do, you will learn that Unger’s Bible Dictionary says that this word literally means to ‘kiss the hand of someone in token of reverence or to do homage.’ An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, by W. E. Vine, says that this word “denotes an act of reverence, whether paid to man ... or to God.” In Bible times pro·sky·ne′o often included literally bowing down before someone of high stature.

Consider the parable Jesus gave of the slave who was unable to repay a substantial sum of money to his master. A form of this Greek word appears in this parable, and in translating it the King James Version says that “the servant therefore fell down, and worshipped [form of pro·sky·ne′o] him [the king], saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.” (Matthew 18:26; italics ours.) Was this man committing an idolatrous act? Not at all! He was merely expressing the kind of reverence and respect due the king, his master and superior.

Such acts of obeisance, or expressions of respect, were fairly common in the Orient of Bible times. Jacob bowed down seven times upon meeting his brother, Esau. (Genesis 33:3) Joseph’s brothers prostrated themselves, or did obeisance, before him in honor of his position at the Egyptian court. (Genesis 42:6) In this light we can better understand what happened when the astrologers found the young child Jesus, whom they recognized as “the one born king of the Jews.” As rendered in the King James Version, the account tells us that they “fell down, and worshipped [pro·sky·ne′o] him.”—Matthew 2:2, 11.

Clearly, then, the word pro·sky·ne′o, rendered “worship” in some Bible translations, is not reserved exclusively for the type of adoration due Jehovah God. It can also refer to the respect and honor shown to another person. In an effort to avoid any misunderstanding, some Bible translations render the word pro·sky·ne′o at Hebrews 1:6 as “pay him homage” (New Jerusalem Bible), “honour him” (The Complete Bible in Modern English), or “bow down before him” (Twentieth Century New Testament)

Jason DeBuhn’s “Truth In Translation” goes into this in great detail in chapter 4… This is a great book for the Bible student who’d really like to understand accuracy and bias in Bible Translations.

If you were to take the time and study this topic, you’d learn that bowing, and paying homage was a common act… this is the word “proskyneo”… choosing to use the word “worship” and the using that as a so-called “proof-text” that Jesus must be God is not correct.
That’s not the way I see it. The Writings of the ECF shows that Jesus was indeed God made flesh. You still have not even refute the word which Jesus spoke to John of Patmos where Jesus himself, I am the Alpha and the Omega.
