Bikinis are immodest - why exactly?

BB–I really like those suits…except that first link, one could get a really strange tan wearing that! 😛 I LOVE the tankinis…to me, if you are not a fan of one pieces, but find bikinis too immodest, those are awesome. I have worn those, and feel very comfortable, and they are modest. Again, wear a cover up for sun protection, and for increased modesty. Thanks for those links. 🙂

Well I am posting here…so the thread will probably die.

From a Catholic Dad standpoint, I ask myself would I want boys looking at my daughters wearing bikinis. Lets be honest, very few men (I’m sure there are some) can look at a woman in a bikini and not think lustful thoughts. While quite a bit more can look at a woman wearing normal clothes and not think lustful thoughts.

Personally I don’t see much difference between bikini’s and most other swimwear that is skin tight. But swimwear that isn’t skintight would probably be more difficult to swim in. In a perfect world, a woman could go nude and guys would be ok, but unfortunately we don’t live in that world. So I guess as long as what you are wearing is appropiate for the activity that you are doing, it can be considered ok. But you should also be aware of what image you are projecting to people whether you intend to or not.

I like your thought process. Its actually kind of similar to mine. Thanks for sharing!

Apparently that first suit is a somewhat ‘new’ invention that’s blending the bikini w/ the one-piece. They call it a monokini. I think it’d generate some strange looks/tan lines too!

I don’t typically wear bathing suits often b/c I seldom have occassion to spend time on the beach or by the pool. I’m also kind of weird b/c I don’t like the way my legs look, so I don’t even wear shorts most of the times. However, the bathing suits I have are typically 2 piece, but full coverage if you know what I mean… Even at that, I like to cover-up (cute cover-ups are a MUST) b/c I have a bubble butt & constantly get wedgies no matter how ‘well’ my suit fits or how its cut! I don’t want to subject anyone to that! 😊 All that being said, I’m pleasing to the eye according to the guys here at work, my husband, my family, and some random guys… I just don’t like being eye candy! That’s why my opinion is that is more in the portrayal of the wearer and the eye of the beholder!

:eek:if I printed off all these posts I could make myself a very modest garment!

As a European, I would like to point out that there is ‘modesty’ and ‘modesty’. If my reason for not wanting to wear a bikini was that I am ashamed of my body, then that would be very sad, as a body is a gift from God and we have a duty to look after ours.
I would not call my decision ‘modesty’ but ‘insecurity’ - or maybe even vanity, because there is the underlying assumption that people are actually going to be looking at me!

If I chose a 1 piece for practical reasons, then that is a different matter. Personally, I’d rather wear a 1 piece as I don’t want to be spending all my time worrying I’ve reached everywhere with the sun tan lotion!

I have actually been skinny-dipping once because it was a naturist beach. I had wandered into the area on a walk and I was not going to curtail my appreciation of the beach and the wading birds just because of a few naked sun-worshippers! I certainly did not find it distracting. Most of them were well beyond middle age and I found it quite reassuring that these people were so comfy in their own skin. There was nothing sexual about it. I really enjoyed the swim because it was amazing to really experience the feel of the sea and not care one jot - because I knew nobody was going to bat an eyelid. It was incredibly liberating to be able to totally divorce pure nakedness from sexuality.

If a passing man had seen me and got excited, that would have been his problem to deal with. However, surely there is a difference between a man thinking ‘that’s a nice sight - aren’t women’s bodies amazing!’ and then moving on - and a man who stands there for hours, gazing in pure indignation, totting up all the ways my body is leading him astray. I know which one I’d label a pervert;)

On the other hand, had I deliberately gone shopping before my trip and bought the bikini that gave me the most elevated chest and least concealed lower half and spent the week prancing around the pool and sun loungers, deliberately showing off my assets and congratulating myself each time I saw a man gazing appreciatively / lustfully, then that would have been totally different! I would be presenting myself in a manner actually deliberately intending to invoke a response. I would only behave like this in private with my husband - and then only if he asked nicely.

Wherever I am though, I would respect the culture of the people who live there. That is good manners - full stop.

***Hi BB 👋

The problem with American society is that it seems to radiate the message…‘if you have it, flaunt it.’ I think that there is a fine line between flaunting our looks, and being modest. Flaunting our looks = vanity. Wearing something form flattering is fine.

I also wouldn’t want to embarass my dh or my kids (I have teens now) by walking around in a skimpy two piece, something I wore when I was 21. You know?😊 I am told I younger for my age, but still–I know I’m 40. 😉 Before I buy something at the mall to wear, or if we are hanging out at the pool…whatever…I ask myself…is what I’m about to buy/put on, reflect my faith? Help me grow in holiness? Will the piece of clothing DETRACT from my holiness? My husband’s? Others? I find it to be a good rule of thumb for Catholic women. (this is just my personal opinion) 🙂 The bottom line, we have a duty as Catholic women to not serve as visual distractions for men…(they have a duty to control themselves, but we have to be responsible for what we ‘put out there’ too) ***

Not all guys are the same and not all guys are turned on by the same female attributes. Personally, I find it highly amusing that anybody should worry about a belly button showing! (big deal, no interest here)

As a guy, the reason I personally appreciate it when women wear one piece or tankinis rather than bikinis is entirely breast related.

Bikinis highly accentuate the shape and appearance of the breasts compared to other suits. And believe me, that’s not doing me any favors. 😊

Reminds me of the controversy that arose when the TV show “I Dream of Jeannie” first aired. She was allowed to display midriff, but NO belly button.

All I can say about women’s swimwear is that it is all more attractive now than those ugly swimsuits of the 1950’s.

I agree. However, I personally have a hard time knowing where the line between flattering & flaunting is sometimes. KWIM? Also, I’m apparently kind of an idiot when it comes to stuff like this & flirting (according to my co-workers, husband, & family). I dress comfortably, but in a way that I think is flattering (not flaunting & calling attention). I behave in a friendly, open, joking manner. Sometimes guys take either/both my clothing &/or manner as being overtly flaunting/flirty. Its not my intention, but according to my husband “its just the way guys think.” I don’t know if I should just stop talking to people & wear burkas or lay the blame on the guys who can’t seem to control their thoughts/actions. I hazard a guess that tje answer is somewhere in between, but I’m at a loss as to how to change myself b/c I don’t think I’m doing anything overtly flaunting/flirty.

Nothing wrong with dressing nice and being friendly. Guys may like to think that it’s just for them, but that’s just a common misperception.

My biggest problem is that sometimes it gets to a point where I get uncomfortable &/or the guy gets too comfortable thinking of me in that way. I’m not very confrontational in real life. I tend to let things slide until I’m about to explode (anger, joy, sadness, hurt feelings, etc). I actually just had to have a trusted co-worker speak to a new guy about his comments to me. The response was “She was doing it too”, but I didn’t realize I was… Since its happened b/4 I’m afraid the problem is with me (If more than one person has a problem w/ you, its probably you - not them w/ the problem - the saying). Sometimes I wish I could work w/ all women (straight - not lesbians) just to avoid some of these problems.

Well, some women are just more friendly than others, and I think it would be a shame to have to tone down your friendliness just to avoid being hit on. But since the thread is about bikini’s, I’ll have to add: don’t wear a bikini to the office.

Yeah, that’s a good rule of thumb. 😃 lol

Hi BB…I used to be a little confused on this stuff, too… naive my husband would call it. 😉 But, truthfully, some men just find any type of female attention as flirting, and some men see it as just someone being friendly. If you are truly not flirting, which doesn’t sound like you are…then that’s all that matters. Can’t change others, only ourselves. 🙂 Listen to your husband’s thoughts on it, though…because men’s perspectives on these things can be such eye openers.

I suppose that on casual Friday’s a bikini would be OK.
Oh, wait, that’s just the wishful thinking ‘guy’ part of my brain going off again.

But, I did work in an office once where one of the ladies came very close to this type of outfit. She also brought her Victoria’s Secret catalog to work to share with her married male coworker, and asked his advice on what sort of enhancement surgery she should get.

It takes all kinds.

I realize she was out of line, but the entertainment value was pretty good. 😃

From another thread, but i got this was the general opinion: apparently bikinis are immodest to wear while swimming, at least among US Catholics.

Why?

It’s an honest question, and I’m really curious.

I don’t see one’s stomach and back as sexually temtping in any way, so I really don’t understand how a bikini is more ‘immodest’ than a one-piece.

To be clear, I don’t think one-pieces are immodest either, as there is really nothing sexual about arms and such… 🤷
I think it depends on how much they show…A 2 piece ssuit can be modest, but when you start making it skimpy, you are doing it to call attention to parts of the body we cover

Anyone can tell when something is provocative, rather than modest

Hi rose, I agree.

BB, the trick with modesty is not to get hung up on it. Just like conscience can get warped into scrupulosity, modesty can warp into an unhealthy obsession too.

If you already question yourself from time to time and ask yourself what it is you like about your clothes, odds are you are doing just fine.

I remember when I was about 16 or 17, I went to the beach one Saturday, and saw the girls there in bikinis. They looked so good I could not believe it. I just turned around and went home, because I was too uncomfortable. So, perhaps it would be best if men and women had different areas to swin in, about a mile apart.

These days most people could have a few more scruples about how they’re dressed.

And maybe there should be more fathers like my brother in law who said to my 13 year old niece last week, after she walked into the room wearing daisy duke shorts and a halter top, “you aren’t leaving the hallway in that outfit, much less the house!”

I think modesty comes up so often because it’s so hard to find modest clothing these days. If a dress is long it’s usually low cut and if the neckline is high it’s usually tight and short. I think about modesty each day, because I have to come up with different layering combos so body parts aren’t hanging out all over the place.

I don’t think two pieces are necessarily immodest, but when people say they are I doubt they’re thinking of the “tankinis” that were popular a few years back. They’re probably thinking off the typical string bikini that you usually see on the beach or at the pool.
