Ian Holm to Play Pope John Paul II **
Source: Variety
June 30, 2005

Ian Holm will play Pope John Paul II in the upcoming CBS biopic about the late pontiff, reports Variety. The four-hour miniseries is on track for a debut as early as November.

Holm (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy) will portray the elder Karol Wojtyla, starting with his election to the papacy; a younger Wojtyla has yet to be cast.

Some second unit footage has already been shot, with full lensing set to begin late next month in Italy and Poland.

Tentatively titled Pope John Paul II will follow the life of the man who would be pope from his days as a high school student in Poland through his death earlier this year. Historians for the Vatican have supervised the script and exclusive access has been granted to St. Peter’s Square and its surroundings.

Holm’s recent credits include The Aviator, Garden State and The Day After Tomorrow.

Hmm…that’s cool I guess. Hopefully he’ll look taller in this flick.

If this network tried to make Reagan say “Those who live in sin should die in sin” about AIDS victims, I dare not imagine how they’ll portray our former Holy Father.

I think if the Vatican is as involved as the OP states, we can hope it won’t happen.

But you’re right to be skeptical…

I think he’s a great actor and will do a great job! Yeah for Bilbo!

Good actor but much too short.
I’m sure how tall he actually is, since I can’t really recall seeing him in other movies, but the actors playing Hobbits in the LOTR movies were not any shorter, on average, than the other actors. They just came up with some interesting cinematic tricks to create that illusion on screen. For example, in close-up conversation scenes, the other characters would typically be standing on blocks to appear taller than the Hobbits. They also had to make two different versions of some of the sets, such as Bilbo’s house - there was a set built to the same dimensions as a normal building, and then there was a perfectly scaled-down “Hobbit-sized” set to film the scenes with Gandalf, so he would appear to be much taller.

Ian Holm = 5’6"
JPII = 5’10.5"

This isn’t that unusual for an actor to play someone with a 4" height difference. It’s all in the camera angles. He is an excellent actor, and I’m sure he’ll do great.

I don’t recall how tall Alan Ladd was, but it required a lot of tricks to make him appear tall, or even average, in his movies.

One of the tricks is to make sure the other actors are to scale. (I don’t mean pay, of course) It really isn’t that bad. If the Pope were 6’4", it would be a different stor.

Hello All,

I am very troubled about CBS or any other Three Letter Network doing a Movie/Series about John Paul the Great. I fear a pompus Liberal Anti-Catholic will make him look like a hateful Autocrat. :banghead:

I’d feel much better if this was a Feature Film with George Wegel serving as consultant if not Writer/Producer. We should write to CBS and DEMAND that they give a true portral rather than some trashy National Enquirer style “Expose”. :nope:

In order to make a demand, one must be in a position to enforce the demand. “We” are not.

Not only that. but to start out of the gate with demands and assumptions is arrogant. Wouldnt it be better to contact an agency like Catholic League and ask them to simply inquire of CBS if this is gonna be a fair piece and have Vatican consultants involved … BEFORE assuming the worst?

Ehem…you probably missed this part of the report: “…Historians for the Vatican have supervised the script and exclusive access has been granted to St. Peter’s Square and its surroundings…” above.
