So he totally won the debate and made the gay defender of the sick advertisment mocking Christ look like an idiot, then, at the last second, he calls the guy a “loser” and says that calling people names is a Catholic value.

I mean, talk about a waste!!! How often do us Catholics really get out there in the media and obviously win debates with people like that- then BILL decides to whip out a horrible, immature, and totally uncharitable ad-hominem attack and then say such outbursts are Catholic!

Yeah, I remember seeing that back when it first aired. I go to school with a guy who’s family is freinds with Mr Donahue, and I like to argue that he comes off as a jerk. I don’t care how right you are, don’t be a butthead about it on national TV while representing my faith. As much as I was offended by the chocolate Jesus, I was much more impressed with the artist’s maturity during the interview than I was will Mr Donahue’s. I just hope that in the future he can make his points without lowering himself to name-calling. Other than that, Go Donahue!

I know people who refer to Mr. Donohue as Shoutin’ Bill. Sigh. I admire his passion, but I think the Catholic League needs a more media friendly spokesman - someone who can wield a stiletto instead of a saber.

I’ve often said on these forums I’m big fan of Bill Donohue, but after hearing he called Kathy Griffin a “b****” (per Fox News Lauren Green) and after hearing him today, I am sorely disappointed and embarrassed. This is no longer the man I want representing the Catholic faith in the media. He has grown increasingly obnoxious and insulting. Calling the man a “loser” was inexcusable, and then to say it would be a Catholic value to do so because he was too proud to admit he shouldn’t have said that was the last straw.

Where he used to come across as passionate, now he just comes across as angry and irrational and arrogant. When the other guest said the ad was not offensive to people in San Francisco, Donohue responded - “it’s offensive to me and that’s all that matters”.

Bill, I love your passion but you’ve lost control. Please keep up the fight but let someone else do the speaking for the Catholic League in the media.

Mr Donahue is a bit ‘salty’ on occasion but I approve of his representation in Catholic League. I understand his passion about these matters…

Thanks, but I’ve already got a lot on my plate 😛

I will do it! I would have told the person that I will continue to pray for him. That is what Christ would have wanted me to say!:gopray2:

Well, I am glad someone else felt that Mr Donahue was way over the top today. I was so sad to see him lose his cool so quick he didn’t even give the opponent a chance to speak. I think that the Catholic League really needs to find someone new.

Oh man, that was brutal. I just watched the video and had to turn away from the monitor because of the “cringe” factor.

But here’s the thing: Have any of you looked at the Catholic League Website to see what Bill is talking about? It is beyond horrifying. I mean, you just can’t imagine. Knowing that Bill deals with this absolute garbage every single day stirs so much compassion in me for the man. I couldn’t control myself or my tongue after looking at these pictures and I am only sitting here alone in my office! I can’t imagine how I would handle myself if I had to confront some upstart who was actually trying to defend this filth by using the Sopranos as an analogy!

Still, it may be time for Bill to pass the torch. He is showing signs of burn out. He has always been fearless and struggled a bit with tact, but I’ve never seen him actually be mean to another human being. Let’s keep Bill in our prayers.

I think you stated this very well. I can understand him being just plain fed up with all the garbage he is speaking out against and it would take its toll on anybody. But when you reach the point where you can’t keep your anger in check when you’re a public spokesperson and you begin being mean to your adversaries, and you poorly represent the Church you are so passionately trying to defend, it’s time to take a break - for the sake of that which you love.

I hate to throw this into the mix but I think it’s pertinent - if the efforts Mr. Donohue continually fights against were also publicly denounced by our American Bishops, he may be able to keep his anger in check. It helps when you know you have the hierarchy of the Church on your side and they’re willing to share the heat with you for speaking out. Just my opinion. I’m continually disappointed with how little I hear from our American Bishops as a whole on issues like this.

I thought Mr. Donahue lost it when he was “debating” the NARAL spokeswoman a couple of weeks ago. While I agreed with him, his use of name calling does not properly represent Catholic morality.

What type of name calling did he do??

The problem with debate is too many people think it is just about trying to scream louder than the other person, and get the last word in before time is up. They just say “yes it is”, “no it isn’t”, and interrupt each other and yell and try to get the other person to lose control. That’s great, if the content of the debate isn’t important- but when it is, stick with the facts. See who can come up with the most logical argument, and can politely (meaning allowing the other person to finish what they are saying, in a calm voice, before respectfully beginning with their response). People just don’t get it. This sort of thing would be much more interesting if they would discuss and explain what they know rather than try to out-yell each other.

:banghead:

can someone tell me where i can see this video? I personally feel that Bill Donahue is great guy, and I like how he brings some passion to the table when defending the faith, though sometimes he goes a little over the top, i like his attitude of being on the offensive. I saw a debate on msnbc where he and the artist who made that chocolate crucified Jesus debated over whether it was appropriate and how necessary was it that it had to be unveiled during lent. Donahue really showed that guy.👍
