It’s interesting that me having such knowledge of my origins evokes such a strong reaction from you, care to explain yourself?
faith and begorrah! it’s because i didn’t know you had an oral tradition explaining it all. pardon my mistake.

That didn’t answer the question, I will leave you to your bizarre outbursts I think.

If you guys want to rally around Bill Donahue go ahead no one can stop you. It will no doubt contribute to people like you getting their jollies from playing martyr in the future too. keep it up.
This sort of uncharitable characterization bypasses the issue of justice. Do Jews get their “jollies” by playing the martyr in the face of anti-semetism? Did Blacks get their “jollies” by playing the martyr during the Civil Rights Movement?

Bill Donohue is not always right, but if he is ever right, then your comment was uncalled for.

I don’t think so. I think your comparison of a present day Catholic pundit to the Civil Rights Movement or Jews historical struggles against antisemitism underscores my point; i.e. those that enjoy Bill Donohue often derive gratification from portraying their “struggles” as far more serious “persecutions” than they are.

Bill Donohue’s group was not even founded until 1973 when a “catholic” had already been in the white house.
Contrast this with the Anti-Defamation League founded in 1913. or Jesse Jackson who started being an activist while segregation still existed.
The modern day American Catholic that Donohue purports to speak for knows nothing of persecution. Sure he/she can be offended plenty, but I don’t believe anyone has a civil right to not be offended, or even to be liked.

I don’t think this is a valid point. If I am right about any of Donohue’s supports I guess criticizing me must also be off limits?

I assure you I did not do it for my gratification. But yes, I do object to assigning of such base motives to others in such a broad sweeping manner.

please. know thyself. I’m not going to claim I can read your mind, but I’m guessing you didn’t rack up 13 hundred posts on here because you hate arguing with strangers.

I assure you that you are very much mistaken. If you stay here long enough, perhaps you will see things differently. If you take this thread as an example, you will not that instead of engaging in the current off-topic argument, I went back to the original article and quoted **specifics **I found objectionable, as was requested.

2478To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way: (Catechism of the Catholic Church)

He’s documented years of open bigotry. When was the last time anyone suddenly found themselves unemployable for it along the lines of a Helen Thomas? It doesn’t happen because it’s widely acceptable (as Donahue’s record clearly shows) and Catholics for the most part put up with it. It’s unacceptable to express and foster hatred toward Jews and African-Americans because we all know where that type of venom leads.

I am very much mistaken? you do post here because you hate arguing with strangers? that’s very admirable :). good point with the Catechism though. I definitely wasn’t living up to that in this post, as you pointed out. So, I’ll try and backtrack a little:

As far as the actual original discussion goes, I certainly don’t request that Bill Donohue resign. He does his thing, and if you like him go ahead.
Personally, I think he creates publicity for many controversies that don’t deserve attention. When he does turn his attention to worthwhile things, I think his arguments are weak, and his style is off putting. In that video previously posted with him and C. Hitchens, I thought he managed to make Hitchens look like a gentleman, and conducted himself like a bufoon. This strikes me as no mean feat considering his opponent. I find him embarrassing.

As far as his role in “the American Church,” I think we’ll be fine with or without him.

ahhhh…you might have had me until you mention Jesse Jackson…Seriously?

If you think Donohue should resign…I think Jesse Jackson should resign…

His Irish origin is a direct factor in him even been a Catholic.
Yes,it was that great ENGLISH Saint,Patrick who Catholicised we former Celtic Pagans and brought us to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.I suppose Columbus` òrigins were a direct factor in his being a Catholic as well.

Bill Donohue Must Resign, For The Good of American Catholics
How does Wilhelm presume to know what’s good for American Catholics in the first place?

Donahue’s organization just sent letters to all US Bishops listing all the organizations that they have been donating Catholic dollars to - which support abortion and gay marriage. (About 50 organizations.) …

I’d be very interesting in reading this letter. Do you have a link? Thx.

While minding one’s own business is often considered a virtue, when the chaos from a neighbor’s house spills into your own yard you are afforded the option to say something. In the case that I raise today, a certain man has been allowed to run about like a feral child in the playground of the media, spouting nonsense and threats for quite long enough. I say on behalf of reasonable-minded people everywhere (both skeptics and believers), that Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, needs to be reined in before he completely destroys the reputation of the Catholic Church in the United States.

The Holy See has been through a rather rough patch in the last few years. Unfortunately one of their most public representatives during this time of difficulty has been a man whose actions are indefensible. Mr. Donohue could not have broached the national media arena at a worse time for the church. While the Vatican is in crisis around the world, with the Pope himself calling for change and penance, Bill Donohue has been happily kicking the hornet’s nest with a vigor unabated by either logic or circumstance.

Why do you say this?

Because he defends orthodoxy?

Whose side are we on?

Resign as what? He doesn’t hold any official position in the Catholic Church that I know of. Isn’t he just the leader of a private organization? I don’t give that organization much credibility, but I know better than to think that Donohue speaks for all Catholics.

I think that calling for people to resign has become far too common in our society. Mr. Donohue has the right to behave like an idiot if he is really determined to do so. He’s always good for a laugh.
