Bill Donohue Must Resign, For The Good of American Catholics

Anyway, a thought I had about Bill Donohue…anyone see anyone else fighting for the Catholic Church in this country the way he does? I don’t.
But shouldn’t you first inquire whether the way he does it is good?
As for me, I can take a little “in your face” persona as long as he is fighting for truth, and against persecution of Catholics in this country… and he is most definitely doing that!!
Translated, this seems to mean “I don’t care if he’s a jerk–he’s a jerk on the right side.” Which is not only an amoral but an astoundingly short-sighted position to take.

If someone on “your” side behaves in ways that you would find obnoxious if they came from the “other” side, then that person is not benefiting your side at all. And I think there is no reasonable doubt that if Donohue were an atheist or a Jew or a member of any other group, Catholics would find him as outrageous as non-Catholics in fact find him! You more or less admit this, which proves the point of the OP.
Besides that we need a little of his no nonsense approach as the majority of Catholics in this country just roll over and play dead. It’s the “turn the other cheek” philosophy, which I think is really misunderstood. After all, Jesus was not a wimp.
Turning the other cheek has nothing to do with a wimp. But the relevant passage from the Sermon on the Mount is really the Golden Rule. Imagine how you would respond to Donohue if he were speaking for, say, Muslims. I think you’d be ready to call for him to be investigated by the FBI as a probable terrorist sympathizer.

Mr Donahue is not my favorite person but he certainly is useful to have around. Probably a “more reasonable” Bill Donahue would not be so effective.
Indeed, a more reasonable person would be nowhere near as effective on behalf of the enemies of Catholicism–the only group benefited by Mr. Donohue’s actions.

P He overstates his outrage in order to get his point across.
But it *doesn’t work. *Apart from the fact that he is unjust and uncharitable on a regular basis, his approach demonstrably causes people to dismiss the existence of real anti-Catholicism.

He’s the classic embodiment of the boy who called “wolf!”

He’s not alone. The ADL and the Southern Poverty Law Center, not to mention CAIR, are open to similar criticisms. But Donohue is particularly outrageous, and the group for which he’s advocating is relatively much more powerful historically than either Jews or blacks (much more comparable to Muslims in this regard), so he gets less of a pass.

I think that calling for people to resign has become far too common in our society.
I agree 100%. Whenever something happens that upsets anyone, the knee-jerk response seems to be to call for resignation. It strikes me as a skewed, yet easy, answer to satiate people’s innate desire for justice. It makes people feel better without them having to go through the effort to work through things effectively and make a lasting change.

But I digress… :o

I understand your criticism. There could very well be ways that would be more effective, but I’m not ready to say that Donahue’s tactics don’t work at all. I’d have to think it though some more to comment on whether or not his efforts do more harm than good. There are a lot of people here at CAF that I think are just happy to see someone publicly speak out against anti-Catholicism and actually be paid attention to.

… There could very well be ways that would be more effective, …
No one has come up with one yet. The squeaking wheel gets the grease.

👍

Let me add that there is altogether too much confusing the messenger with the message in today’s dialog.

The bottom line is what he does works. He single handedly through his coordinative efforts made Coors back down from sponsoring the Disgusting Public anti-Catholic Homosexual sex-in in San Franciso.

St John the Baptist wore animal skins, ate grasshoppers and honey and was probably covered in bee stings .He probably stunk to high heaven too,and probably was considered nuttier than a fruit cake by some of his confreres because of all of his in your face preaching.

I could care less about his personality.I tend to defend my faith vociferously and the anti-Catholic or anti-priest joke teller or slanderer at any gathering I attend will be dressed down and publicly embarrassed by yours truly. In addition to being personally devout I wear my Catholicism on my Tshirts and bumperstickers that may be considered tacky by some of my own tribe and seperated brethren, but so what?Jesus Christ was anything but a wimp and I’ve heard Him say some pretty obnoxious things in the Bible and even trash a joint or two.

He is not the only face of Catholicism.I am,and so are all the other Catholics in this world including His Holiness, and there are a lot of us who are obnoxious, irritable, crabby and aggressive, but we will defend Christ, and His Church to the death. What have you done lately to defend Catholicism?Oh,I forgot, you’re not Catholic.

He’s a rough tough two fisted Catholic, the only kind that the world takes notice of today. In you’re opinion he’s too obnoxious but I’ll tell you what,he’s OUR obnoxious Catholic and I and millions of Catholics are grateful to him and his efforts. In fact he reminds me of my late fiercely Irish-Catholic Mother who would brook no criticism of the Faith and who literally threw people from our home for insulting the Church that Christ instituted, sort of like what Jesus did when he saw His father’s house profaned.

The United States has a long sad history of anti-Catholic bigotry and Bill Donahue is but ONE albeit very effective response to it.

The mainline Protestant Churches are imploding and losing their members to Catholicism and Evangelicals and Fundamentalists because no one takes them seriously with their watered-down "inclusive"Kumbayah Christianity and because they won’t defend themselves. And because they have bowed down to the Tyranny of Nice.I wouldn’t trade Bill Donahue for anyone and if others don’t like it,well TOO bad,SO sad.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Father Jonathon Morris is now frequently on Fox News to combat tirades against the Church. He is mild-mannered, polite and accurately portrays what comes from the Vatican. I always agree with what he says BUT it is not memorable.

When Bill Donahue throws a hissy fit, I remember. And I guess the detractors do too, lest there would not be a campaigne to get rid of him. When he retires, I hope there is one just like him to continue to fight for the Church.
Amen. We don’t need more wishy-washy Cafeteria-goers (not to say Fr. Jonathan is one, I have not seen him).

Here are a few of the things Mr.Donahue has accomplished or co-ordinated.May we see yours Edwin?

After having read the article in Huffington Post, and having seen Mr Donahue on air many times, I have to agree that he certainly makes Catholics look like a bunch of creeps. Since the size of “The League” is never mentioned, it is easy for a viewer to think Mr Donahue represents the Church, or at least most of American Catholics, neither of which is accurate. While conservatives who are Catholics often insist that anyone who disagrees with them are simply not Catholic, the fact is that most American Catholics would disagree with much that I have heard Mr,. Donahue say on the air, as well as his gen eral manner.

All I ask is a civil discussion, and Mr Donahue ususally seems more concerned with throwing bombs to excite his more fervent supporters to send more money. Being inflamatory simply doesn’t help people try to understand you. Rather, it makes it easier to write him off as a nut.

Wrong.Your personal distaste for the man matters not a whit. What matters is his effectiveness in defending Catholicism. The world thought Christ was a creep and crucified him for it.The world thinks Catholics are creeps anyway-who cares about impressing the world. Our fealty is to Christ and the Truth and to Defend the Body of Christ as stronly as we can and Bill Donafue is one of our most effective non-clerical warriors.Did you even bother to read the posts prior to yours?

ad hominum attacks are juvenile and to be summarily dismissed.I note that your stated faith of etc.has PLENTY of defenders:thumbsup:

Mega 👍 . Like I said earlier, there’s a lot of confusing the messenger with the message. I find his arguments are quite well thought out and convincing.
