How many people here think it would be appropriate for the Pope to threaten physical violence against people, belittle people because of their nationality, and regularly make bigoted statements through the media? If not, why do you approve of Donohue doing it?
This pre-supposes that he does these things. I have read a lot of what he has written and seen him interviewed on TV a number of times and have found that your perception is not the case at all.

So you think that statements such as, “I’m pretty good about picking out who queers are” are appropriate?

You’re right.

But, didn’t there used to be a New York Times Style Guide, that told people what words to avoid and etc?
Yes, it still exists. It does contain words to avoid and words that should be used. The media is known for creating unnecessary drama. The most current offender is the term “water poverty.” The Times not only publishes news but acts as a sort of pulpit to preach for certain causes. It shapes public perceptions about certain issues.

Orwell called it “Newspeak”. I’m not so sure of your last statement, though. Even among the pro-life movement, we hear the use of the term “fetus” used to refer to a pre-born baby.

How terms get started and perpetuated is a mystery to me. For example, “happening” has now been replaced by “going down”, as in “what’s going down”. Who was the first to use it, and how it entered widespread use by the general population are probably lost to history.
These words and phrases are created and marketed by the media. I was watching a TV program and a well known celebrity used the term “my bad.” A ridiculous combination of words. The Left and the media create parts of reality. An elite few in the fashion industry guide what is sometimes mislabeled as clothing into the hands of unsuspecting young people. During World War I, American troops received free cigareetes while stationed in Europe. Some of them kept on smoking when they came back. Hollywood also dresses its actors and actresses in this clothing to give the impression to impressionable people that others should wear what they wear. TV programs include new word combinations in the hope the viewing audience will use the words in real life.

The Gangsta Rapper was a prepackaged product and the marketing was vulgar. How about a gangsta shirt wrapped up in a plastic package to look like a kilo of cocaine? Or some cool rims that were signed by P. Diddy (currently Diddy), with a reminder of an incident where he was chased by the police? Or how about teaching young men to wear their pants so that they hang half off their butt to expose their underwear? The height of low culture.

And let’s not forget singers. Their handlers can certainly advise them to add “new” words to their songs.

God bless,
Ed

Instead of complaints on an internet forum, why not contact Mr. Donohue directly? Voice your concerns directly.

God bless,
Ed

I guess what you have said here can be summarized as “fads”. A little OT, but of passing interest, about 20 years ago, there was a rock band that wore Mercedes-Benz hood ornaments on chains around their necks. I lost about 4 hood ornaments to rock-star wannabees. About 5 years after that, someone discovered that MB wheel covers fit a different make pick-up truck. I saw one sporting them in a parking lot and was severely tempted to steal them because I just knew they had been stolen from someone else. I had to remove mine until it blew over.

How many people here think it is fair to besmirch a persons reputation by anecdotal evidence? How many people here confuse a crusty Irish Catholic with our gentle Pope.?
How many people here are happy with the message and are sick of people regularly condemning it because of their personal distaste of the messenger?
How many people here are happy he’s on OUR side?

So you think that statements such as, “I’m pretty good about picking out who queers are” are appropriate?
Queer is no longer perjorative-even homosexuals use the term as in "We’re here and we’re Queer"or “Queer Nation”,I’m pretty good at picking them out too-it’s called reverse gaydar.Did you ever hear BD utter those words?I’m willing to cut him a little slack,as I’ve been called a cookie worshipper, cannibal,Mary worshipper, mackeral snapper,Catlicker and Dogan Jew,and I 'm so used to it it’s like water off a duck’s back.

So he’s not perfect and a sinner. So are you,and me.Just admit it you have a visceral distaste for the man,we’ll all nod our heads sagely and you can stop with the character assassination or ad hominums to use a more erudite term…mmmm’kay?

Who do people want representing the Church—some heretic who demands that His Holiness accept abortion, homosexual ‘marriage’ and women ‘priests?’

You’re right.

Nearly all Newspapers have style guides and they can sometimes lead to hillarious results. In trying to stick to his Conservative Nebraska Neswspapers style a headline writer once wrote “Enola Homosexual exhibit opens in the Smisthsonian” Of course the exhibit was of the Enola Gay-the plane that dropped the first A Bomb

What we need is a hundred more men like Bill Donahue who are on fire with love for Jesus and who are willing to put themselves on the firing line and in the cross-hairs of the enemies of the Church.
I would rather take a hundred more people like Mother Teresa. 😉

Didn’t Mother Teresa say something along the lines that abortion was a great evil?

I think a lot of people want to hear the so-called “God is love” teachings. They want the hearts and flowers, “I love you no matter what” kind of teachings. They don’t EVER want to hear that Jesus whipped people (perfectly ordinary average people) from the temple and called their presence that which made the temple a ‘den of thieves’. They don’t EVER want to hear the gospel passages where Jesus called the Pharisees and scribes whited sepulchers. They don’t want to hear about how He came to bring a fire that He wished would blaze, and that He brought not peace but a sword. They don’t want the ‘tough god" teaching where Jesus–JESUS HIMSELF --God the Son, omnipotent and omniscient, told His followers that many will be LOST, that NO ONE at all, not even the apparently ‘righteous’ could be saved.except through God’s power. Which looks more like even Mother Teresa would not have made it ‘on her own’ except through God’s help. . .so what price Joe Average? They don’t want to hear Jesus defending some woman ‘wasting’ a $300 jar of ointment which COULD have been sold ‘for the poor’ on only Jesus’ feet. . .

They only want to hear, “Everyone will be welcome, everyone will be saved, God loves you too much to let anything keep you from the paradise where you will get EVERYTHING YOU WANT FOREVER no matter what you have ever done.”

For myself, I’d rather hear the ‘tough truths’ instead of the syrupy semi-gloss and revisionist gospels. It’s sad that authentic Christian teaching like Mother Teresa’s has been ‘adapted’ to the latter and used as an ‘example’ of the so-called “God is love” crowd as above.

If one pays careful attention to what Donohue says, one would realize that he is harping on basically only one thing: the double standard by which government entities and the popular culture treat Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular compared to the way they treat The Other.

And finally, how many Catholics are tired of door-mat Catholics demanding the rest also be doormats? God created soldiers for a reason.

Two Popes have stressed the role of the laity. The priests are not going to do this alone. I listened on Catholic Radio as Father Riccardo told a group at a meeting to “do something.” He suggested getting into politics among other things.

If Bill Donohue has spoken poorly then speak to him. Send him an e-mail. Be polite and point out whatever you think needs to be pointed out.

By baptism, we are all missionaries. All of us. We need to be prepared to give an answer as to the hope that is in us.

In reading the more recent posts, I just had a general thought to share as a response. 🙂 (I say general, because I do not intend them to be in any way construed as an indictment of Bill Donahue).

I really think I see some good point on all sides. We want to be tireless defenders of the faith. It’s good to not be afraid of suffering persecution for the sake of the Gospel. It’s good to speak the truth. However, this does not give us free reign to be as obnoxious as we want to be.

I’m not saying that “tough love” is never appropriate. I just see no reason not to carefully consider the concerns of people who are genuinely turned off by someone’s approach. It could very well be that such consideration will lead us to conclude that it is appropriate in this or that circumstance. We might conclude that this or that person is really just looking for an excuse to reject Christianity, or that this or that person rejects all the “hard sayings” anyway. But, then again, we might find that we have been uncharitable and need to rectify that.

As pertains to Bill Donahue, I know that he gets misrepresented by the secular press. I haven’t spent a great deal of time reading his press releases, but I did peruse a few of the one’s mentioned in the article from the OP. It struck me that the article seemed to overstate quite a few things (which is, ironically, one of the problems the author had with Donahue in the first place). They were not filled with nearly so much rancor as that Huffington Post article would have us believe.

What’s missing from your analysis is any mention of the motives of the author who calls for his resignation. Do you honestly believe someone from the HP [or **any Leftist media] has American Catholics’ good will at heart when calling for Donohue to resign? It is like Osama bin Laden calling for President Bush to resign for the good of the American people, and as such the whole article is laughable on its face.
