In reading the more recent posts, I just had a general thought to share as a response.

(I say general, because I do not intend them to be in any way construed as an indictment of Bill Donahue).
I really think I see some good point on all sides. We want to be tireless defenders of the faith. It’s good to not be afraid of suffering persecution for the sake of the Gospel. It’s good to speak the truth. However, this does not give us free reign to be as obnoxious as we want to be.
I’m not saying that “tough love” is never appropriate. I just see no reason not to carefully consider the concerns of people who are genuinely turned off by someone’s approach. It could very well be that such consideration will lead us to conclude that it
is appropriate in this or that circumstance. We might conclude that this or that person is really just looking for an excuse to reject Christianity, or that this or that person rejects all the “hard sayings” anyway. But, then again, we might find that we have been uncharitable and need to rectify that.
As pertains to Bill Donahue, I know that he gets misrepresented by the secular press. I haven’t spent a great deal of time reading his press releases, but I did peruse a few of the one’s mentioned in the article from the OP. It struck me that the article seemed to overstate quite a few things (which is, ironically, one of the problems the author had with Donahue in the first place). They were not filled with nearly so much rancor as that Huffington Post article would have us believe.
