“And finally, how many Catholics are tired of door-mat Catholics demanding the rest also be doormats? God created soldiers for a reason”.

To the teeth,man,to the teeth.

God loved David who would have clocked Alexander in a fair fight

Let us pray that God gives Bill some more humility but "“not yet Lord, not yet”.

I would rather take a hundred more people like Mother Teresa. 😉
Whom he is requesting that Malkin honour.Mao but not Theresa aren’t you a little upset?Exactly what kind of twisted agenda does Malkin have?Instead of eviscerating a warrior Catholic we should be questioning the motivation of a man who has a POLICY of honouring people and events but NOT Blessed Mother Theresa?

Could it be because of her stirring speech condemning abortion when she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize?Could it be because of the ubiquitous bumper sticker that quotes her,“It is a poverty to kill a child so that you may live as you wish”?

Could this whole thing be a skirmish in the greater war between the Culture of Life and the Culture of Death?

I’ll just bet it is.I’ll bet he wanted to avoid the censure of NARAL,Planned Parenthood,N.O.W. and every anti-life harpie who can carry a placard.I guess he figured Catholics to be their usual DOORMAT selves.I guess he thought wrong.

He forgot about our non-caped Crusader who ALSO lives in Gotham City and now he’s reaping the whirlwind.

Go get 'em B-man.

Keep in mind that Mr. Donohue works in New York City; Mother Teresa was essentially unsuccessful in New York City.

Mr. Donohue has sharp elbows and if you aren’t aggressive in New York City, then you fade.

The most successful Catholic Archbishops in New York City were very outspoken.

In fact, some of the most successful Catholic spokesmen in New York City have been extremely outspoken: Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Fr. George Rutler, Fr. John Perricone, and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

Each has/had a different style, but they were or are aggressive for the Church.

Sounds like an internal guide for their reporters.
Uhhh … Negatron!

The New York Times Style Guide is THE essential public document for political correctness.

NOT just an internal guide. If it WAS an internal guide, then they would only need a hundred copies.

Instead, it is sold on Amazon:

amazon.com/York-Times-Manual-Style-Usage/dp/081296389X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278158031&sr=8-1

Nope, PC-ness is a big deal to quote Joe Biden.

Here are some excerpts from people who reviewed the book, just as illustrations of how the New York Times has been effective in planting political correctness in our society:

"Before buying this 1999 edition, I used an edition that was published in the early 1970s. That edition prohibited writers from using the word “councilwoman”. I was curious whether a more recent edition would change this prohibition.

I see that the 1999 edition does permit the use of councilwoman.

I don’t understand why the Manual doesn’t use U.S.A., as an abbreviation. It uses only U.S. "

Don’t buy this., August 18, 2004

This is a book which will tell you that using “data” as a plural is “stilted and deservedly obscure”. This book essentially surveys the current mis-use of language and writes it down for all to follow. I expect they would have to issue a new version every year to keep up with the drift, which I suppose would be a good money-maker for the publisher.

Mr Donohue has vigorously defended her
Donohue has promoted the myth of Mother Teresa; not the real woman. Not the Mother Teresa who had profound doubts about her faith. Not the Mother Teresa who believed she had been abandoned by God.

Sorry, got timed out.

But back to Mr. Donohue’s lack of Political Correctness … here is another reviewer of the New York Times styleguide (from Amazon)

Excerpts:

The question of power comes into play in two ways in publication usage. At the Times, ultimate power on usage rests with the publisher. The decision to adopt the title, “Ms.”, was made very tardily and after considerable argument, by publisher fiat, according to Times executives’ accounts. So a discussion of how the politics of usage questions get resolved would be in order.

Perhaps more important is the question of whether a superpower of journalism, such as the Times, should exert its influence to bat down ugly neologisms when they first appear and to offer plausible alternatives. … A discussion of such issues is needed.

The bottom line: the sheer quality of editorial output, its quality, the immense worldwide respect for the New York Times confer superpower status to its style and usage practices. A well-organized narrative text that examines the infrastructure of its practices would have been an outstanding contribution to journalism.

Should you buy this book? Sure; it’s the newest, most comprehensive of its type. Take a look at the entry for “men and women” and you’ll find an admirable exposition of the Times’ efforts to maintain equality of treatment in its editorial voice. But it is too bad that such a grand opportunity for a true `guide" has been missed.

Based on that last sentence, it looks like the New York Times has allowed itself to let a crisis go to waste.

So who died and made them king?

Read the book about Mother Theresas 55 years of the "dark night of the soul"It surpasses the suffering of St John of the Cross and St Theresa of Avila. You demonstrate that you have a nil understanding of Catholic Mysticism. You will not be very effective and will in essence be ignored if all you do is parrot the miscomprehension of Christopher Hitchens.

Read Come Be My Light. It changed my life and it just might bring YOU into the Light. As far as Blessed Theresa of Calcutta being a myth that statement is beneath contempt and simply reveals your utter incomprehension of this Subito Santo. The secularists are so insecure that they can’t even leave one of God’s best friends alone.

She demonstrated HEROIC Faith as she never gave up and once she realized that this self same thing had happened to the Greatest Saints of the Church,She embraced the Darkness as a sign of God’s special love for her.She had asked to experience exactly what Christ had experienced on the cross which was absolute abandonment-“Eli Eli lama sabachthani?”

How uncharitable of you to denigrate one of our most giving, generous and loving of all our Saints who brought the Light of Christ into the Dark holes of Calcutta.

Bill Donohue is as New York as you can get. He takes no BS from anyone, and if you try to give it to him, he will call you on it with no hestation. He is completely unafraid of standing up for what he believes in, and cowers to no one. Of course the Left is going to hate him. They can’t get to him no matter what they do.
You pretty much nailed it.

I work in the media. We don’t and never will use the New York Times Style Guide. The NYT is often referred to as the “newspaper of record” for the US but I suspect that this title was bestowed by opinion and not in any official capacity. The NYT can claim they have been referred to by that title but their bias is plainly obvious to those who read other news sources.

Calling the NYT Style Guide some sort of public document just because you can buy it on amazon? People are selling excerpts from wikipedia on amazon. Sadly, those who pine away about working in Hollywood, and for the New York Times, may consider it essential, but I certainly don’t, along with the company I work for.

God bless,
Ed

It appears you like Christopher Hitchens view of the Church more than Bill Donohues.

Wow, are we really talking about the subject of the threat, or is the subject of the thread about heritage? It would be nice so as to not derail the thread completely.

Anyway, a thought I had about Bill Donohue…anyone see anyone else fighting for the Catholic Church in this country the way he does? I don’t. As for me, I can take a little “in your face” persona as long as he is fighting for truth, and against persecution of Catholics in this country… and he is most definitely doing that!! Besides that we need a little of his no nonsense approach as the majority of Catholics in this country just roll over and play dead. It’s the “turn the other cheek” philosophy, which I think is really misunderstood. After all, Jesus was not a wimp.
Evidently some people will not be happy until every ‘Catholic’ official is spouting the communist party line.

:highprayer::knight1: We shouldn’t lose sight of why the Church should be defended - elegantly or otherwise
Jesus died on the Cross for His Bride, the Church
The stakes are high - the eternal loss or salvation of precious souls.
That’s the bottom line !

I never meant to say that Mr. Donahue is a creep, only that he makes Catholics look like creeps. In fact I dont believe I even said that he should resign.

\When I have seen him rail about “anti-Catholicism”, it only made me think that there must not be any of which to speak, as his examples were so poor. There is a difference between a position, statement, practice or deed, which a Catholic might not support, and one which demonstrates a prejudice or even hostility towards Catholics.

Too many of the instances I have seen Mr Donahue (and others) discuss are really of the former rather than the latter, but are claimed to be the latter. This creates the popular perception that the Catholics Mr Donahue represents expect everyone to conform to their faith, and that not doing so is seen as a form of persecution to them. This can only lead people to dismiss real predjudice when it occurs. Is this what passes for effective?

And unfortunately, the divide often comes down to what some people want to consider newsworthy. Some Catholics consider any negative press about the Church to be unnecessary, or inherently fictional. Since Viet Nam there are many who feel that bad news is not “news” at all, but propaganda. But if there is a question of whether something is newsworthy, should not the error be on the side of printing it rather than not?

I don’t claim to know everything that Mr Donahue may have accomplished. But I do know that Coors has historically been considered one of the most politically conservative of businesses, so I would not be surprised if he moved them. The question remains whether his style was what did it rather than his simply getting the facts out into the public.

You seem to be saying there is something wrong with conservatism.

Also please define the term ‘creep.’

Actually, I didn’t use “conservatism” as a pejorative, but only to suggest that the Coors firm was already inclined towards (some of ) Mr Donahue’s views, and probably did not need much persuading to adopt his position. In which case his style’s effectiveness might be better judged in other examples. Admittedly, “conservative” is a vague term which doesn’t really capture all the views of the Church, nor perhaps Mr. Donahue.

A “creep” is someone who is unpleasant, possibly not nice, and possibly much worse. And of course it will always be flavored by that infamous CREEP, the Committtee to Re-Elect the President, bringing in overtones of deceit and claiming to be above the law.

Has anyone said why the author of the article knows what’s good for American Catholics?

Sounds to me like the wolf telling the sheep to get rid of the sheep herder and elect one of their own in his place.

Who specifically do you feel is engaging in deceit?

Please document your claims. Thank you.
